Full Version: Crashed, Computer Disk Hardware Config Problem
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
Dramamine
I was on the internet, on some sites I've always gone to....my Avast antivirus was up and running,
and suddenly my computer crashed, and the screen went blue. It said the following:

"Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.
Could no read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware."

It then proceeds to run Chkdsk, reboots and runs windows XP, only to crash within the next hour.
Even in this one hour window, I am not able to open anything. I have run the computer in Safe Mode
several times as well. Originally, I could not even get start mode running. Once I did, I tried to
run Superanti Spyware, Avast Antivirus, and Ad-Aware, all to no avail. All programs would crash on me
and have runtime errors. Thank God, the only program I could run was HiJackThis. Please help. Here is my log:

Download and run ComboFix per the instructions at the end of this post but change the name of the program from ComboFix.exe to anyhthing else like George.exe. If it runs, post the log in this thread. You can ignore the Combofic instructions re the Recovery Console. Also, it is only necessary to turn off your AV real time protection. This normally can be done from the tray icon.

Also, I would like to see the chkdsk log. In XP, open the Control Panel, double click on "Adminstrative Tools", double click on the "Event Viewer" icon, then click on "Application". In the "Source" column, look for the "Winlogon" item. Double click it and you should see the results of your Chkdsk.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Dramamine
i can't browse the internet on that computer, i have to use
my phone or another computer. you said something about
saving the program directly to desktop..can i transfer it
from a flash drive?
Dramamine
i am even having a hard time booting the computer into safe mode.
that last time seemed to have been a fluke. it starts loading all of the
"System32/Drivers/.sys" files but then goes back to the chkdsk blue screen.
the computer will then get into a cycle of rebooting itself and trying to start windows
only to get to the blue chkdsk screen. a new error also popped up saying something about
win32k.sys failing or being corrupt. is there a way i can get in with command prompts?
i'm not sure how to go about doing anything here...

*UPDATE*
i apologize for all of the extra replies, but my computer hasn't been cooperative.
i now have it in safe mode somehow, and running the combofix application.
the program did say that i was missing the windows recovery console and said
some serious infections need this to be fixed. i do not have the windows CD and i
cannot open my wireless LAN application to connect to the internet to get this so
i chose to run combofix anyway. i will post the results of this and the chkdsk when all is done and we'll go from there.
Dramamine
nevermind..computer rebooted on its own in the middle of combofix. now i cant get back to safe mode. it will open all of the .sys files but it will stop at mup.sys
the last thing it says is press esc to cancel opening SPTD.sys and from here it is
simply a blaxk screen with a list of all the opened .sys files.
i let it sit here but the computer reboots..
Dramamine
got the chkdsk log but safe mode crashed again and the combofix app crashed as well...

Taking stability and security into consideration, its time to reformat and re-install Windows. Your system appears to be highly unstable and I would hesitant to proceed any further for fear of losing what data is currently reachable. Backup all you valuable data if you have not already done that and then reformat and start over.
Dramamine
well, i have it going to safe mode nearly every time now. i have been deleting junk programs, new files, etc.
It was left running in safe mode all night without crashing. i am going to still try to get it to finish running combofix.
will check back in soon.
Dramamine
i can't quite figure out a way to turn off my avast antivirus from the running tasks in safe mode. the program
is not in the icon tray, but combofix says it is running and gives me several warnings..
LoPhatPhuud
You should be able to disable the real time protection from the tray icon. In any event, go ahead and run ComboFix ignoring the AV warnings,
Dramamine
combofix will not work. either the program crashes or the computer itself does.

Download OTL by OldTimer, saving it to your desktop: http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe
  • Close all open windows on the Task Bar. Click the OTL icon (for Vista, right click the icon and Run as Administrator) to start the program.
  • In the lower right corner of the Top Panel, checkmark "LOP Check" and checkmark "Purity Check".
  • Now click Run Scan at Top left and let the program run uninterrupted. The scan may take 5-10 minutes.
  • Do not TOUCH your keyboard until the scan completes!
  • It will produce two (2) logs on your desktop, one will pop up called OTL.txt; the other will be named Extras.txt.
  • Exit Notepad. Remember where you've saved these 2 files as we will need both of them shortly!
  • Exit OTL by clicking the X at top right.

\
Please copy/paste the following into your post (in order):
  • the contents of OTL.txt
  • the contents of Extras.txt

Please do NOT use the Attachment feature, despite what you might see in any of the above TXT files!
Dramamine
will this work if i transfer it from a USB flash drive? because i don't think i'll be able to get a web browser to stay open without
the computer crashing or the application failing...
LoPhatPhuud
That is fine
