Chucky04
Hi,

Zone Alarm * NAV * Spybot * Ad-Aware, all updated

IE has been hanging the last ten days upon starting, a second attempt starts. The weekly run of Spybot revealed Virtumonde.sci some days ago. I followed the advice you gave another poster and ran Malwarebytes A-M, ATF Cleaner, VundoFix, VirtumundoBeGone, and HijackThis. Some things were found and tossed, but no search turned up Virtumundo.sci, and it's still present. I can see in HijackThis the keys that Spybot highlighted (02 BHO NAV Helper). This is what Spybot reports:

--- Search result list ---
Virtumonde.sci: [SBI $C747BB01] Browser helper object (Registry key, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{A8F38D8D-E480-4D52-B7A2-731BB6995FDD}

Virtumonde.sci: [SBI $53DCC2E2] Class ID (Registry key, nothing done)
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{A8F38D8D-E480-4D52-B7A2-731BB6995FDD}

Here's the HijackThis log:

I'd be very grateful if you could help me on this. Thanks.

First:
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application. (If using Windows Vista, be sure to "Run As Administrator")
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Acan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Second:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Third:
1. Download Random's system information tool (RSIT) from here:
http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe

Choose to *save* the file to your desktop.

2. Double click on RSIT.exe to run the tool.

3. Click *Continue* at the disclaimer screen.

4. Once it has finished, two logs will open in two separate notepad instances.

Please post the contents of both log.txt (will be maximized) and info.txt (will be minimized). You can just copy and paste the text from those logs into a reply to this topic here.

LoPhatPhuud
Your computer is clean. The detect is a false positive and should be reported to Spybot S&D.

Here is the detect you listed:
Virtumonde.sci: [SBI $53DCC2E2] Class ID (Registry key, nothing done)
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{A8F38D8D-E480-4D52-B7A2-731BB6995FDD}

Here is an O2 entry from your HJT log:
O2 - BHO: NAV Helper - {A8F38D8D-E480-4D52-B7A2-731BB6995FDD} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll

Notice that Class ID's are the same (the stuiff in the braces). Spybot is detecting NAV as Vundo.

May I make a suggestion? Delete Spybot S&D. It has outlived its usefullnes, in my estimation. The only effective program for Vundo removal is MBAM, the others can handle some, but not all the current varieties.

You might consider installing WinPatrol and paying for the Plus version.
