Hi there,

This forum has helped me in the past and I'm hoping you guys can help me again.

I've been getting the BSOD almost every time I boot up my computer. Most times, when I restart, it seems to clear itself up. Also, every so often, my computer freezes up and I have to do a hard restart. This morning, I got those error beeps (1 long, 3 short) and suspected it was my video card. I ended up pulling all my cards (video card, IDE controller card, and firewire card) and reseated them and it seems to be working for now.

Before anything else happens, I would very much appreciate it if someone would look at my Hijack This! log and let me know if you have any suggestions.

I don't see anything malicious in your log, but let's be sure, as HijackThis isn't a tell all:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these places:

http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediately.

How is it running? Still getting the BSODs?

Well, so far so good (crossing fingers and biting lower lip).

As a little extra info on what happened:
The BSOD message I got was "MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION" so while I waited for a reply here I did a little searching and found there could be several reasons for this error message. Thinking it might be a hardware issue, I removed/reseated my memory modules, removed/reseated my video card and updated the drivers. I also read it could be from improper or insufficient CPU cooling, so I removed the heat sink and fan from my processor, cleaned out the (embarrassingly excessive amount of) dust from the fins and applied a fresh thin layer of arctic silver. I also ran Ad-Aware 2007 and cleaned out over 300 infections. Even after doing all that I still got a BSOD, so after rebooting, I checked here and did what you asked. Again, so far so good.

Thank you, once again, for your help. Any other suggestions?


**EDIT - 5 hours after posting this reply, I got another BSOD with the same error message. *sigh*

I've been hunting too......and look to Nvidia and see if that might be the problem. Look here: http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t17514.html

I know that's a couple of years old, but it seems really really relevant here. Let me know how you come out.

Thanks again for all your help. A few days after posting here, my comp would not start up at all. It would hang on the Windows splash screen and most times give me a BSOD. Just to get into safe mode I had to restart multiple times before it was stable enough to actually use but eventually gave me another BSOD. I built this comp 2 years ago and when I bought all the parts, I bought 2 identical motherboards - 'just in case.' Well, that was the problem...the motherboard was going bad. Now my pc works like a charm again, and now at least I know it wasn't a virus or malware.
