I am a new member here and I joined because I seriously need some expert's help.

Two days ago, my Task Manager failed on me. It will not come up regardless of the shortcut I use.

THen, when I click on the "Turn Off COmputer" button, the computer hangs. THe only way I can shut down is through the power button.

Additionally, my Firefox wont run. When I open it, a pop up comes and say "I DNT HATE MOZILLA BUT USE IE OR ELSE..." and youtube is off limits too.

I am using AVG and SuperAnti SPyware but none showed anything when I scan it.

I tried to download HijackThis and Combofix but both wont run.

I am on Windows Xp Profesional Service Pack 2.

I am so lost...

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

edt: Task Manager and Firefox is back to normal although I have no idea what triggered it.
LoPhatPhuud
Try renaming HiJackThis to something like abc.exe, then see if it will run.

For the Task Manager, try running it from the Desktop as follows.

Start -> Run -> taskmgr.exe
nickljf
Thanks. Renaming it can do yourock.gif

Here is the log.

*Something weird. My task manager are back running normally and Firefox can run too without that annoying pop-up.

The "Turn Off COmputer" bug is still there.

Please help. Thanks!
LoPhatPhuud
First:
Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

O2 - BHO: mndhddwd.dll - {4C648541-1025-9650-9057-6541258720C4} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mndhddwd.dll (file missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [status] present
O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [winlogon] C:\heap41a\svchost.exe C:\heap41a\std.txt

[/b]Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

While still in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
(Files specified without a full path will be located in C:\Windows\ or C:\Windows\System32\)
C:\327882R2FWJFW\ <--delete entire folder,
C:\heap41a\ <--delete entire folder,

*How to Boot into Safe mode:
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm

**Show Hidden and System files and folders: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread. (Be sure that Word Wrap is turned off in Notepad)

Second:
After doing the above, lets see if ComboFix will run now,...

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

nickljf
The first step was okay and now my PC seems to be normal.

However, two things are still bugging me:

1) Windows will not allow me to show hidden files. AFter I check the option to display hidden files and click "OK" and close the pop-up, the hidden files remain hidden. WHen I click on the "Tools" again, the option for "Do not show hidden files and folders" are checked instead of "Show hidden files and folders".

2) COmbo Fix wont work. It will start and I get the blue screen. After that, nothing happens.

Please help!

We made some progress, but I need more info and the ComboFix failure was not good news. I'll check to see if I can find out why that happened. In the meantime, we'll remove ComboFix, run a different remover, then see if a program similar to ComboFix will run.

First:
Click Start, then click Run.
Enter into the command box that opens: combofix /u and then click OK.

Second:
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application. (If using Windows Vista, be sure to "Run As Administrator")
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Acan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Third:
Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Thanks, will proceed with the new step now and keep the forum updated.

-- End of Deckard's System Scanner: finished at 2008-06-08 13:30:39 ------------

LoPhatPhuud
MBAM found and fixed a few things. It may have corrected the problem with Hidden files so check that out.

Also, if Deckards ran, then I would hope that ComboFix will run also. Go ahead and deleted Deckards, then try ComboFix again. there are some items to remove and ComboFix is the first choice, but if it still errors out, then there are other programs we can use.

That may cause it to stall

nickljf
ComboFIx is still not running.

A weird thing is happening. When my computer starts up and windows load, I have no problem turning the PC off using the "Turn Off Computer" button.

However, after using the PC for a period of time, the "Turn Off COmputer" will cause my mouse to hang when I click it. When I shut down using Task manager, the PC will remain at the "Shutting down your computer" screen. I have to press the power button for ten seconds to shut it down.

What are the alternatives to ComboFix?

Sorry for the trouble.
LoPhatPhuud
There is no alternative to ComboFix other than Deckards. ComboFix will remove where Deckards only reports. There are several other programs to remove files, folders and registry items that can be used.

I want to try something with ComboFix and see if it will work

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

QUOTE
KillAll::

File::
C:\heap41a\svchost.exe
C:\heap41a\std.txt

Folder::
C:\heap41a

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
nickljf
ComboFix still does not work even with the CFScript file

'C:\327882R2FWJFW' which i deleted earlier is back on my C drive again.

However, I notice nothing is wrong apart from the shut down problem.

Is my laptop doomed....
LoPhatPhuud
At this point I would suggest a reformat and re-install as the best path to follow.
