Hi guys,

This is my first post here, so pardon any mistakes regarding posting, etc. The laptop in question belongs to my sister, who's couple states away so I've been talking her through over the phone on this.

Her laptop is a compaq X1000 running XP Pro with SP2. Mcafee Virusscan 8.5 as AV, spybot S&D and AdAware 2007 free edition and the XP firewall. I've been trying to beef up her firewall situation with zone alarm and a router, but it's too much hassle for her (mostly zone alarm). Anyway, apparently she was trying to watch a YouTube clip and clicked YES to a pop-up window about ActiveX. She uses Firefox, but she wasn't familiar with the ActiveX being IE business; plus, YouTube shouldn't need it.

So, according to her accounts, the first error messages were from McAfee and it mentioned the netsky worm. The laptop had red wallpaper with windows linking to bogus security softwares. And IE was all messed up, missing buttons and toolbars. She tried running full scans under normal boot and that seems to removed the threat, but under spybot S&D there were 3 registry entries that couldn't be removed (they come back after S&D "removes" them). And couple hours later, all the symptoms came back (wallpaper change, popup windows, messed up IE). So obviously that wasn't complete removal.

I had her run scans under safemode, and now with smitfraudfix 2.277 and Sdfix, followed by a Hijackthis scan. Below is the Hijackthis log. The laptop seems back to normal, and to the best of my knowledge the HJT log looks okay. BUT... I'd appreciate it if you all can take a look and let me know what you think!

You got most but there are is still one active trojan there and possibly more. Prudent action at this point is to run a genereic cleaner and go from there...

Thanks lophat for the links. Below is the log from Combofix. I think it looks clean, but she also reported that Windows Defender showed smitfraud registry and file entries. She went ahead and manually deleted the file and directory (completely by emptying the recycle bin afterwards). I am hesitant to tell her to remove the remaining registry entries manually for obvious reasons.

But other than that, her laptop doesn't show any symptoms or anomalies. She'll run combofix and hijackthis again this weekend.
