Full Version: A plethora of Programs close without rhyme or reason
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
Fairn
For about a two weeks now, a load of programs would terminate without being prompted and without giving an explanation. I can't find anything online about this (the keywords point everywhere else) so I thought I'd see if anyone here can help me.

Example of the programs that shut down: Every MS Office program, VLC Player, Add or Remove Programs (found in Control Panel), Every Source Game (HL2, CS source, DOD Source, TF2), and Civ III.

I ran both fully updated ad-aware se and Spybot and fixed all problems found, then installed HijackThis and ran it, saving the log file. The following paste is the log.

Note: I will be away from my PC after this post, so if you require a reply from me, I will be able to post at least five hours from the time of this posting.

I thank you for your time and here's my HijackThis log:

Please download SilentRunners from here:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip

Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it.
Silent Runners will ask if you want to skip the supplementary search.
Please select 'No' to include them.

The program will take longer to run, but will give us more information.

If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop.
The logfile is named 'Startup Programs' by default and will be located where the program is.

Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

There is nothing in either log. Both are clean.

I have not seen an issue like this before and have no real answers. It could be hardware (remote) or an OS problem. From your descrption of the problem, I would start with the OS and do a repair install of Windows XP>
