Hi Can you help me with this, please? AVG picked up a virus the other day, I'm not sure if it's been removed now but since then we have pop ups and iexplorer/mozilla windows opening for no reason.

FIrst:
Use Add Remove Programs to uninstall WebHancer. It's spyware! If there is not ARP entry, the next step will remove it along with the other files that need to be delted.


Second:
Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Hi again thanks for your answer. I'm having problems getting the pc to start up in safe mode. As safe mode starts it freezes on the screen where all the system files are listed. I think I may have a problem with the operating system and don't have an installation disk as xp was pre-installed. Not sure what to do now, any ideas, please?

ON systems with the OS pre-installed, there is usually a recovery partition on the hard disk. A key combination (varies by manufacturer) will get you into the partition to restore to factory defaaults. Some require that you create a recovery CD that you can boot from to access the partition. Also, for an additional fee, many computer manufacturers will see you a recovery CD or DVD. You will need to check the computer manufacturer.
