Full Version: computer freezing up!!

I just bought this desktop, probably less than a year ago. Two mornings ago, it starts freezing up for no reason. It doesn't even matter if I'm on it or not, it won't last for more than an hour! The mouse and keyboard still functions correctly, but programs won't respond.


thanks alot in advance!!


edit: i asked a friend and he said that it might be a hardware problem instead, ie the insides are dirty or that my hdd is dying. considering i've just bought this computer, i'm not taking his opinion too seriously

Hello imadoki,


First you should know that you're actually doing more harm than good by running 2 Anti Virus programs. (Norton and McAfee) When you do this both programs compete for resources, and the end result is neither does it's best and can cause system instability. I recommend that you choose the one you want to keep, update it, disable the other one, and use it as an on demand only scan occasionally.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Hello,

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
    Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
    Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
    Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please print these instructions or copy them to Notepad (or another word processor), and save it for easier reference. This is because we will be in Safe Mode during the fix and you won’t be able to access the Internet to view these instructions.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware Free Edition and save that file to your desktop.

This is a 30-day trial of the program -- This means that after 30 days the "background guard" protection will be de-activated. However, this version can continue to be manually updated and used as an on-demand scanner forever.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the setup program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need to run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the top of the main screen select the "Update" icon, then under the "Manual update" section click the "Start update" button.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed (the progress bar will display "Update successful!") select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the "Settings" screen:
    • Click on "Recommended actions" -> select "Quarantine".
    • Under "Reports:" -> select "Do not automatically generate reports".
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Please do NOT run a scan yet!
Next, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Reboot your computer.
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but just before the Windows icon appears, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, reboot the computer and try again.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
  • Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the "Safe Mode" menu item, and then press "Enter".

Then please run a scan with AVG Anti-Spyware:

IMPORTANT: Do NOT open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process.
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab. Click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
    • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select the "Apply all actions" button, AVG Anti-Spyware will then display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
    • Next select the "Save Report" button at the bottom.
    • Then select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand corner of the screen and save it as a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important!).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system normally into Windows. Please post the contents of the AVG Anti-Spyware report in your next reply.
Please also post a new HijackThis log and let me know how the computer is running now.

The AFT Cleaner link wasn't working. I used CCleaner instead.

I ran the AVG scanner in safe mode. It ran for 30 minutes, and nothing was found. I tried to 'save report as..' and post it anyways, but right when I clicked on the button, the computer froze again :(

I deleted the items in hijackthis, like you told me to :)

i ran the bit defender, and it found 102 infected items. i looked at the log and most of them were trojan.busky, trojan. pushes (?), and trojan.starter.V

i'm not sure if it's relevant, but the status description would say something like:
infected with: trojan.starter.v
disinfection failed
deleted
update failed

and it would just repeat that another five times over.

I was going to save it, but again, right when i pushed the button, the computer froze :(

Hello,

That's all right. :) You can only do what you can do. I didn't want to do this, but I guess I need to :

Your log shows that you have disabled some startup programs using MSConfig.
This is not recommended because I cannot clearly see everything that is loading on your computer at startup.
To enable all startup items quickly please follow these instructions:
  • Start | Run | type msconfig | OK
  • If not already selected go to the General tab.
  • Under Startup Selection select "Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services".
  • Click Apply and then Close.
  • When given the option, please choose to restart the computer.
  • Post a new log when you are done.

Okay, you can put it all back the way it was if you want to. :)

There's just nothing there. I'm thinking anything found at this point is going to be in System Restore.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it ( something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Now run a scan of your choice and see if you still get infected files. If so, please tell me what they are, and where they are, if you can..

my bluetooth mouse started acting up; i couldn't move it at all. so i tried doing a diagnostic startup from the msconfig, and not only did my mouse work again, but i've been using the computer for almost 1.5 hours now, and it still hasn't frozen on me. ahaha, i feel as tho there's definitely still hope :]

edit: oh yeah, i forgot. i ran avg scan on it. it only found five tracking cookies.

Hello,

Then it looks to be a conflict somewhere. I don't think it would do any good at this point to be hunting for malware....wild goose chase and all. Let me know if it all stays good, please.
