Full Version: My computer is a wee bit strange
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
Gromit1968
Hi, there,

I've been reading but so far I haven't seen anything that might help...I don't know if my computer is infected but this is what it's doing: I did a scan with AVG yesterday and it told me I had a Trojan (which I cannot find when I Google it) Downloader.Agent.SEO. Also, it told me this trojan was in the file C:\ProgramFiles\ezcalendarfree.exe. That was a free calendar program I downloaded about a year ago but found it wasn't exactly what I was looking for so I uninstalled it and deleted it...I don't know how it suddenly popped back up. I deleted it a few weeks ago. AVG deleted the file and quarantined the virus, and I emptied the virus vault. I also did a scan last night with Norton and beefed up the firewall as well as downloading the Sunbelt Firewall. Today I did another AVG scan as well as a SuperAntiSpyware Scan...AVG was clean, SAS just found adware cookies. So I did some researching on how to make your computer run faster, since it seemed that whatever virus was there was now gone. One recommendation was to turn some of the startup items off, so I turned off MySpace IM and saw something called Lucky Reminder that is supposed to be in a folder under Program Files\24h Lucky Reminder. I have searched for this folder and can't find it. (I also searched for the ezcalendar and the search didn't find that, either) I turned on all the hidden files but still couldn't see anything. I ended up rechecking MySpace IM and the Lucky Reminder b/c I got a message after restarting that stated because I had changed the settings, I would get that message every time I booted up. If I have to close that message, I may as well close MySpace IM. =)

I know I probably have too many antivirus/spyware/firewalls running and I'm probably doing too much Googling, =) but I figured I'd ask if anyone can figure out what's wrong. HiJackThis log is below.

Thanks in advance!!

Denise

P.S. Am I being too alarmist if I'm thinking of wiping the whole hard drive and doing the whole recovery disc thing?

Hi Denise,

I don't think it is time to wipe just yet. Your log looks pretty clean ,so let's see what we can do with it.

Before we are going to deal with the entries of the log I would like to see what we can get rid of in the normal way.

Please create a list of programs that can be removed using Add/Remove Programs
Start HiJackThis. Click "Config"->"Misc Tools"->"Open Uninstall Manager" ->"Save List".
Save the log to a convenient location, and copy it into this thread.

Hey, Bobbi,

Thanks for the help! Also, I forgot to mention in my first post, and maybe this is just a problem with this particular software, but I downloaded Yahoo Sitebuilder and it was fine for a few days, then it wouldn't open, so I uninstalled & deleted and redownloaded it, but it again won't open. It's the only software that does that.

Thanks again!
Denise

Hi Denise,

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Ugrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
Open "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. Select the following items:
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 <-- not bad, but a security risk
  • WildTangent Web Driver
and click "Remove" for each of them. If one of the uninstallers wants to download stuff or needs an Internet connection, skip that one and report them to me.

Is there any message on the screen? What happens exactly? It will probably be doing something, just not visible, so any information might help to enlighten me as to what s happening.

Can you post a new log from HijackThis after this, thanks.

Hi, Bobbi!

OK, I followed your instructions. Yahoo Sitebuilder sometimes will put something in the bar on the bottom (where the start button & clock are...sorry, I don't know the name of it) that will make it look like it is about to open, then it will disappear, and other times will not do anything...after I double click the icon, it will have an hourglass for a few seconds, but then the hourglass disappears and it does nothing. Here is something odd, though...after I installed the latest Java and went to delete Wild Tangent (I had already deleted the old Java), I noticed that there are now TWO entries for Yahoo Sitebuilder, and one has a Java logo next to it. It seems vaguely familiar to me that there was one there before and I deleted it...I can't say for sure. Maybe that's why it's acting like that. Also, when you say the new Java may not work in ME, do you mean Media Edition, b/c I have that, but it seemed to install OK. It didn't give me any error messages, anyway.

So... Is Sitebuilder working now? I didn't get that part..

ME is Millenium Edition, it is a different version of Windows while Media Edition is a version of Windows XP. Legacy operating systems can make things difficult LOL.

You seem to be running both Norton Anti-Virus and Grisoft's AVG7. It is not a good idea to have multiple anti virus products running. These programs get in each other's way. Use just one as an "On Access" scanner. You can keep the other one for "On Demand" scanning.

And the same goes for double firewalls, you may think that an exta firewall will make the system more secure, while in fact most of the time the system becomes less secure because of that. As you have Norton's firewall as well, I recommend to uninstall Sunbelt's. When the subscription to Norton expires you can uninstall Norton and reinstall Sunbelt's firewall.

Your log looks clean. How's the system running?
Gromit1968
Hi, Bobbi,

Sitebuilder was not working. I uninstalled AVG and the Sunbelt Firewall and I thought that while I was at it, I would remove Sitebuilder and reinstall. I downloaded it again and then tried to install, but it said that the version of Java that I now have is not compatible with Sitebuilder and that it wanted to download the version it needed. I canceled the install...I figured that if the version it needs is susceptible to malware, I'll use something else to build my website. =) I think the only thing I have left to do is that I think I have both Norton and Windows firewalls going, so I'm going to turn off Windows.

System is running fine...thanks for all your help!!

Denise

Hi Denise,

I saw that you have Sunbelt's firewall and Norton's. The Windows firewall I cannot see in a HijackThis log :(

I am not sure how Sitebuilder works, but I use HomeSite for my website needs. Basically that is more of an editor as you have to type everything in it, but I prefer that to a point and click interface.

If you do like SiteBuilder I would wait for a later version when it can work with the newer version of Java.

If you have any questions, you can ask them.
