Full Version: CPU Pinned at 100%, machine REALLY SLOW, need help
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
jackger
3 days ago My machine started acting VERY slow, opened Task Manager to see that I had virtually no apps running and CPU was pinned at 100%.

This continues regardless of the number of re-boots and restarts I do.

In Task Manager:Processes
"Image Name" = SYSTEM,
"User Name" = System
"CPU" = 99%

OUCH

Before ths happened, whole thing happened, I started getting blue screen of Death pointing to an app that I have not used in a year. File was SSRTLN.SYS. This is one of three "Sonic" programs I have.
I repaired all three via the control panel, BSOD went away but system still remains pinned. I am uncertain, but afraid I might have picked up a nafarious bug.

BTW: SSRTLN.SYS is NOT in the processes currently running on my computer.

Running:
McAfee: VIrus on-line v10.0
Ad-aware DE Personal
Spybot S&D
SpywareBlaster
(all up to date)

HJT logs follow: I know that the registry is a mess: I ran a program called EasyClean which identified a BUNCH or registry entries it identified as being able to be DELETED. I DID NOT DO THIS, I am uncomfortable simply deleting all these entries. - AGAIN, I DID NOT DO THIS.

HJT log is as follows:

Enter the following commands: (then press 'Enter')
sc stop NetDDEdsma
sc delete NetDDEdsma
exit

Note: Its ok if the 'Stop' command fails.

Second:

You are currently using hijackthis from a temporary directory, or from the Desktop.
This can cause problems and will leave backups scattered.

Please create a directory on your c: drive called c:\hijackthis and download and unzip hijackthis into that directory.
Run the program from that directory from now on.

It is essential that you follow these steps or certain important features of the program will not function correctly.

Third:
Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Press the 'Scan' button and when done check the following items in HijackThis:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iRiver Updater] \Updater.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u

O24 - Desktop Component 1: Desktop Uninstall - (no file)

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

While still in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
(Files specified without a full path will be located in C:\Windows\ or C:\Windows\System32\)
C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe

*How to Boot into Safe mode:
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm

**Show Hidden and System files and folders: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.
jackger
Thanks for your ehlp VERY much.

Per your request:

FIRST

I entered both commands and each one resulted in the same error:
“Sc open service Failed 0160”

I am unsure, but I was in one of my “Documents” folders when I ran this, should I have been in a specific folder?

Second:
I have put hijack in it’s own folder.

THIRD:

Reboot:

I had some adventures here trying to close down my machine:
First I received a message that a program “ausupdatewtitle” was not responding. I ended this program.

Then I received the Blue screen of Death:
Driver IRQL not Less or Equal
SSRTLN.SYS address oxf7a68d9c, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0xft89b82f

Help on this indicates:
Problem caused by Sonic Solutions Shared Driver Component (SSRTLN.SYS)
This problem was caused by Sonic Solutions Shared Driver Component (SSRTLN.SYS). Sonic Solutions Shared Driver Component (SSRTLN.SYS) was created by Sonic Solutions.
Recommendation
Contact Sonic Solutions about upgrades or other possible solutions.

This is the error I received a while ago, but repaired three “Sonic” programs via contral panel.

Rebooted in SAFE mode,
ran HJT and
indicated I had “successfully fixed” 4 items.

I also note now that I can not open my DVD drive either by button or "eject"

I found svchost.exe in SYSTEM32 but was unable to deleted it: Can not delete, access denied, Make sure Disk is not full or write protected, and that file is not in use.

restarted from Safe mode to Normal mode.
I noticed that the first three registry lines you asked me to delete did not re-appear, however the last one is still present.
Re-ran HJT

oh, silly me, forgot to mention that CPU Still pegged at 99%.

Thanks again

First:
The service in my first step does indeed seem to have been removed. It does not appear in the last HJT log. But once removed, you should have been able to delete the file C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe.

Double Check to make sure the service has been deleted as follows:

Start -> Run -> services.msc (press Enter)
Scroll down the right hand pane and see if this service is present "Service: Network DDE DSMA (NetDDEdsma)"

If it is not there, go to the next step otherwise, do the following:

RIght click on the service we just found
Select 'Properties'
In the Service Status area, press the Stop button if not greyed out
In the Service Type area, use the pulldown to change the status to Disabled.

Second:
It is possible that he file was being loaded from another place in the registry. The following will give us some clues.

Please download SilentRunners from here:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip

Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it.
Silent Runners will ask if you want to skip the supplementary search.
Please select 'No' to include them.

The program will take longer to run, but will give us more information.

If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop.
The logfile is named 'Startup Programs' by default and will be located where the program is.

Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

First
Thanks again for your efforts on my -part.

Second
Brief recap:
CPU STill pinned at 99%
Can't open DVD drive
Have not rebooted or restarted since our last post.

Third
You wrote
"Scroll down the right hand pane and see if this service is present "Service: Network DDE DSMA (NetDDEdsma)"

I did not see ths specific entry:

I did see “Network DDE” and “Network DDE DSDM”. BOTH WERE DISABLED.

Fourth

I ran Silent Runners. Log posted below (FYI) I see several references in this log to "sonic" applications, but do NOT see any reference to SSRTLN.SYS which was causing issues prior.

""Silent Runners.vbs", revision 52, http://www.silentrunners.org/
Operating System: Windows XP SP2
Output limited to non-default values, except where indicated by "{++}"

I suspect that Sonic Solutions may be part of the problem. The only way I know to test that is to uninstall it, reboot, and check the Task Manager to see if System is still consuming 99%.

Post back and let me know. If System is still consuming a large percentage of the CPU, then we can install a program to let us explore it greater depth.

As an FYI, in the XP Virtual machine on this computer, System was consuming less than 5% and in most cases, 0%.

Sorry for the delay in response, but I have been apprehensive about posting immediately.

Per your recommendation, I used the "add - Remove software" within control panel to delete the following applications:

Sonic DLA
Sonic RecordNow
Sonic Update manager
SonicStage.

Following a successful shutdown and restart, it has the appearance THAT I HAVE MY MACHINE BACK AGAIN!

HOW WONDERFUL. I pay homage to your oracle-like wisdom!

Thank you so much for all of your assistance and time spent on my behalf. I am extremely grateful.

Are there any other actions you woudl recommend?

Last question: Having seen all the things that reside in my registry, could you recommend a good and simple registry cleaner for a novice like myself? I had used "easyCleaner" and it recommended a large number of entries that could be deleted. My fear is that I am very apprehensive of deleting so many ambiguous entires that I know nothing about, and as a consequence, I could not bring myself to hit the "Delete All" button.

Once again, thanks so much for your help. The GLADIATORS HAVE COME TO MY RESUCE ONCE AGAIN!

Best regards, Jack.

Contact Sonic Solutions regarding the CPU % problem. Perhaps they have a fix or maybe it was just a bad install.
