I have started receiving an error message saying when trying to do anything with explorer, saying that the process needs to be restarted - the usual standard Microsoft Send / Dont Send error report question.

In event viewer application log there is the following error

Faulting application explorer.exe. Version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module msvcr71.dll version 7.10.3052.4, fault address 0x00002ff0

The same happens when trying to view a video or open an mp3 - regardless of the program used. when this happens 2 errors are recorded in the log...

followed by a similar message with the relevant application / process name replaced depending on what was opened - e.g. winamp.exe / wmplayer.exe etc...

Has anyone got any idea as to why this has started happening or got a fix?

Make sure you can the option to See Hidden files/folders turned on. Then open C:\Windows\System32\dllcache\ and look for msvcr71.dll. Copy it to C:Windows\System32\ overwriting the current file.

Lets get a HiJackThis log. I have a couple of leads, but need more info.


Click Here to download the current version of HiJackThis.

• Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
• Open Notepad > Click on Format > Uncheck Word wrap, if checked.
• Double-click on the desktop icon for HJTsetup.exe.
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
• Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  
• Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
• Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
• At the final dialogue box click Finish and HijackThis (HJT) will launch.
  
• Close any/all browsers, messenger, mediaplayer, Office and mail client windows and applications.
  
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button; HJT will then scan and a log showing the results should open in notepad.
• Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the contents of the log to your clipboard.
• Come back here to this thread, right click your mouse and select Paste to paste the log in your next reply.
• DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
• Make certain your post shows the entire log, please.

Nothing in the HJT log, other than minor cleanup.

THis one is a puzzler. I can't find any info on it that is pertinent to yuor computer. Was there any software updates just before the problem? Any new software installed?

well, there is one thing thats been changed - my PSU died the other week so ive replaced it with a new one.
Other than that, it hasnt been on the internet for around 4weeks so there have been no microsoft updates etc... for a while and as far as i can remember, i havent installed any other new software etc...

Hang on for a bit while I have someone else check this log for another opinion.

Got an update on the problem.
It now only appears to be crashing when opening certain files. Mainly when opening MP3 files through WinAmp (latest version) i get the same error as above, although when opening through ITunes it works fine.
Also random Mpeg/Avi/wmv files cause the same problem. but different files work ok through different players. e.g 1 file will crash using Windows Media player, but then open fine using DivX Player - where as a different file will be the opposite way round.
Could this be more of a corrupt codec rather than a machine virus / fault?

Yes, it could be corrupt Codec. It may also be the result of a Digital Rights Management issues. Were the files that caused the crash DRM protected? Were they obtained from recognized websites?

I dont think the files were DRM protected....although im not entirely sure what that means...

DRM = Digital RIghts Management

It controls what the files can be used for and on which devices.

Well the MP3 files that arent working through WinAmp were ripped from my CD collection straight onto my computer if that answers the question?

If remember correctly, Winamp can rip files from CD. Were the MP3's that won't play ripped using Winamp?

The file Properties (right click, select Properties) should show if the file is protected. Files ripped from CD usually are not protected.

They were ripped using a program called Free CD-DA Extractor 4.8.

But i now have broadband back at home, and after downloading the various Microsoft updates + Security updates etc... that were available the problem seems to have stopped....or at least it didnt happen last night anyway.
