Hi, my AVG alerted me to a trojan horse virus on my computer. I've tried healing the file that is infected, but the virus keeps on returning. I was hoping you could help! Here is my hijackthis log.

This file, C:\Documents and Settings\Ravi\Application Data\SopCast\adv\SopAdver.exe, is your problem, but the HJT log does not show where it is loading from. A startup list should give us the information we need to remove it. It will also show if there is anything else hiding.

Thanks. The program has an ARP entry but before we remove anything, what is the file that AVG is detecting?? SopCast displays advertising and can be nuisance, but I want to be sure that is what AVG is detecting.

The file that AVG is detecting is a temporary internet file and the location of it is;

C:\Documents and Settings\Ravi\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\2056JLG1\click[1].htm.

OK I believe if we remove Sopcast and clea nthe temp files, the issue will go away Its not as serious as AVG makes it appear.


First:
Use Add/Remove Programs and uninstall SopCast 1.0.1


Second:
Download and scan with CCleaner
1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free Basic or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section.
• Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

Ok i have uninstalled sopcast and ran Ccleaner, is that all i need to do? Thanks!

That was all. THe file was located in the temporary internet files folder. There is nothing on your system creating it, so I suspect it may come from a site you visit. It is possible that AVG is detecting a False Positive or the file is more Spyware/Malware. As long as AVG is catching it, and you are not suffering any adverse effects, I would not worry. If it is constantly showing up, then you need to try and determine which site is the culprit and add it to your restricted sites.
