Hi Guys,
My laptop has been diagnosed by AVG with Brontok.C, which Im having real trouble getting rid of, could someone please help me? I have used up to datebanti virus numerous times which tells me that its gotten rid of the infected files, but they always come back a few minutes later. Ive also read through numerous other forums where people have suggested registry changes, but of the entries were in my registry. Could someone please help me out?

The infected files that AVG finds are all in my Shared documents folder – Data HP.exe, SharedDocs.exe, My Pictures.exe, SyncPlaylists.exe and the like.

The HJT log does not show any infection. What was the name (and path) of the file AVG detects?

A startup log may help to find the culprit. Also, MessengerPLus 3 needs attention.

First:

Messenger Plus! 3 (and it predecessors) are a source of malware and will eventually compromise your system, if it has not already.

I strongly suggest that you remove Messenger Plus. Here's a page with instructions for proper removal of Messenger plus and it's sponsor.

Second:
Please download SilentRunners from here:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip

Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it.
Silent Runners will ask if you want to skip the supplementary search.
Please select 'No' to include them.
The program will take longer to run, but will give us more information.

If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop.
The logfile is named 'Startup Programs' by default and will be located where the program is.

hi, thanks for the quick response.
the link you gave me for getting rid of messenger plus didnt load up, so ive uninstalled it from the add and remove programs option in my control panel.

the files that AVG detected were in the path - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users
they are not currently there, but do regularly reappear. the ones i can remember are - My Music.exe, Sample Pictures.exe, SyncPlaylists.exe and Extras.exe, all within the My Music, My Pictures, and Adobe files. The next time they are detected then i shall post the results here, but those examples should give you a good idea of what they are.

Your system is clean. It appears that the start location used by the worm is not present. Most likely removed by AVG. Do afuill system scan using AVG and be sure to include archived files (zip, rar, etc). Here is information on the worm: http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/w32vbcai.html

the virus seemed to be gone since my last post, but within the last few hours avg picked the same files up again in my shared folders.

i think i may have figured out the problem. i am in unversity halls, and rather stupidly i have left my shared folder open to be modified by other users. as the files only seemed to appear there, im guessing someone else on the network has the virus, and it copied its self into my shared folder. i have now changed the folder setting so it is not able to be modified by anyone else on the network.

Glad the issue was resolved. Shared folders with blanket access always exposes your system to someone else's "bugs". Adequate protection is invaluable, but for today's internet, you can only afd ford to allow restricted access.
