Full Version: "Your computer is infected !"
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
SilverRat
I am not positive when I became infected, but when I installed the MP3 software from the Sony walkman MP3 player I got my wife I first noticed:
a) my browzer getting hijacked to several sites (One site was: http://www.winantiviruspro.com/pages/newco...d=anti+viru%3E)
b) a red shield in my tray (that says "Your computer is infected !" when the mouse hovers over it)
c) a "blip" noise that goes off randomly, that was never there before.

I searched on the internet for "red shield virus 'your computer is infected" and found your site at the thread http://gladiator-antivirus.com/forum/index...showtopic=49038
I have read your guidelines and much of your instructions and am asking for your advice, suggestions and help.
The instructions the guidelines for posting suggested that I do 4 things so I did:

1. I have registered on this site.
2. I have updated my Adaware SE and my Spybot Search and Destroy and run them both several times (they both show no infections atm) [also I am now running ClamWin AntiVirus]
2b. After reading the suggestions for " How to Stop Hijackers & Spyware Infections, And other malware too! " I also updated and ran my SpywareBlaster, downloaded and installed: SpywareGuard, IE-SPYAD, and ZoneAlarm Firewall.
3. downloaded and ran HijackThis (see below)
4. Started this thread (New Topic)
[Notice how I am trying to do everything you suggest and ask? Thats because I REALLY want and need your help! 8) ]

Please tell me what I can do. I would like my computer back to being under my control. Thanks in advance.

Hi SilverRat,

Before we are going to deal with the entries of the log I would like to see what we can get rid of in the normal way.

Please create a list of programs that can be removed using Add/Remove Programs
Start HiJackThis. Click "Config"->"Misc Tools"->"Open Uninstall Manager" ->"Save List".
Save the log to a convenient location, and copy it into this thread.
SilverRat
I am having trouble following your request.\

I am doing:
1- open HiJackThis
2- I see "New Users QuickStart"
3- I press button "Open Misc. tools section"
4- under System tools section I press button "Open Uninstall Manager..."
5- NOW - when I press the button "Save list..." (normally I would assume that a button with a '...' leads to a sub-section to define the filename/location) is shuts down HiJackThis and I don't see any file having been saved.

Is my HiJackThis corrupted or is this normal and I am looking for the file in the wrong places?
Some of the other options/buttons of my copy of HiJackThis don't seem to work as intended.

I think that you have an infection that is messing with HijackThis. Can you rename HijackThis and try again? If not, we'll continue with something else.
SilverRat
re-downloading, extracting and re-naming allowed me to run HiJackThis! Thanks!

Hi SilverRat,

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Ugrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Open "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. Select the following items:
  • DivX Pro Codec
  • Internet Explorer Default Page
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 <-- not bad, but a danger as malware can open older versions of Java and use their exploits
and click "Remove" for each of them. If one of the uninstallers wants to download stuff or needs an Internet connection, skip that one and report them to me.

Please post a new log from HijackThis after this.
SilverRat
Ok, Followed your instructions, only one little glitch - the Internet explorer default page wasn't listed on my add/remove list - I used CCleaner to uninstall it. None of the ones you said to delete seemed to attempt to access the internet or have anything unusual about their uninstalls. here is the new HiJackThis:
EDIT --I forgot to re-install Java6 - this is before that install + I will post the after by editing this again.

Here is the HiJack file - (btw- I had to run it four times to get this one - it kept locking up/not responding)
You're still heavily infected. That's probably why.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Had a couple difficulties following your instructions - ( I have been running several different viruse remover programs between posts here)

---The File C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\nkdsregp.exe. was no longer on my machine

---several of the files you listed were no longer on the list I had, so I just checked then deleted those that were still there and were on your list.

Hi SilverRat,

Please disable SpySweeper, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.

To disable SpySweeper:

Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options >Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "Shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck "automaticly restore default without notification".

Run Spybot-S&D. Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected. On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident and uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts. Restart your computer.

After this please repeat my earlier instructions as it looks like the two are keeping everything in the logs. After this please subimt a new log.
SilverRat
I disabled SpySweeper and TeaTimer as you requested then checked off the remaining lines you indicated in the previous post, rebooted and rescaned/logged with HiJackThis giving me:

Hi SilverRat,

This log looks clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....
SilverRat
