Full Version: Computer Problems
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
NekoMx
Hey all, new to the forums and I have a problem.
I'm pretty sure that my computer has been infected with some kind of virus/worn/trojan, but im not sure what it is.

I think it started when i opened an e-mail that said 'mandatory update' (heh kinda stupid of me) i was using yahoo, and it didnt say that there was an attached file, so i opened it, the page did not load, so i just exited my browser (no the browser did not freeze, the page just didn't load)

Information:
I have a custom computer.
Windows XP
Norton AV
Zone Alarms Security Suite
Ad-Aware
Spybot Search and Destroy
A2 (A Squared)
Wormguard
(need more info? ask please )

Symptoms:
(all kinds of symptoms...)
1. Random startup/login errors. Sometimes, when i login, i get random messages like 'Windows cannot find user profile, logging into temporary profile' (or something like that, this was just from memory, so i dont remember the exact words, but thats all there was to it, and when it logged me in with that 'temporary profile' it was like i just reformatted. When i would restart, it would log me back into my old profile. Odd, huh?

2. System Restore Error - well, when i tried to run System Restore to try to fix this problem, worm guard blocked it. Of course i didn't run it the first time, but as I got frustrated with this, i let it run anyway... the System Restore ran... in 5 minutes it was over, i thought 'wow that was fast' and when windows started up, it said that the restore failed, and of course i was frustrated at that time. Obviously something wrong there.

3. In the 'My Computer' folder under files stored on this computer i HAD two files, Documents and Anthony's Documents, now i only have one in there... Documents. the folder 'Anthony's Documents' still exists on my computer, i know because i checked, but it just doesn't show up in the 'My Computer' folder anymore. Strange....

4. I use diskeeper to defragment my computer, and whenever i defragment they have sections called:
Blue - high performing files and folders
Red - Low performing files and folders
Pink - low performing system files
White - unused space
Green/White - Reserved System Space.

Hard to explain without an image but here it goes....
When my computer was clean, the Defragmenter would do its job and it would never touch or move the System files/space. When i got infected, the Reserved System Space (Green/White ) moved.... to the middle row (it was originally near the bottom) and it seems like the Reserved System Space was cut in half, of course another sign that my computer is in trouble.

those are the major problems, I've had minor problems too, but i bet they are just the effects of the virus/worm/trojan.

and here is the log file, anything look suspicious?

Hi NekoMx,

It is not a good idea to have multiple anti virus products running. These programs get in each other's way. Use just one as an "On Access" scanner. You can keep the other one for "On Demand" scanning.

Update Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )

It should have next icon next to it:
    Select it and click Remove.
  • The current version can be downloaded from Sun here: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9' and press the 'Download' button. On the new web page, click the 'Accept License Agreement' button. Then select 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' in the Windows Platform area just below the Accept button.

Before we are going to deal with the entries of the log I would like to see what we can get rid of in the normal way.

Please create a list of programs that can be removed using Add/Remove Programs
Start HiJackThis. Click "Config"->"Misc Tools"->"Open Uninstall Manager" ->"Save List".
Save the log to a convenient location, and copy it into this thread.

Go to Online malware scan and submit C:\WINDOWS\RTHDCPL.EXE.

Tell me the result.

Hi NekoMx,

You are using LimeWire. This is not technically malware by itself, but it installs malware in order to run properly and it opens the door for every other nasty program you can think of. I strongly recommend that you remove it. Read this article for alternatives that will provide some of the same function without the garbage: http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/ If you opt to remove it, first use "Add/Remove Program" to remove it and any reference to LimeWire.
This is another article: http://www.cexx.org/adware.htm

This is an open source version of LimeWire: FrostWire. Be aware that this does not mean that what you download is malware free.

Open "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. Select the following items:
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • XoftSpySE <-- XoftSpy has been delisted from Spyware Warrior's Rogue List. Since the program was on it I recommend to uninstall it and use programs from the trustworthy list which can be viewed on the same page.
and click "Remove" for each of them. If one of the uninstallers wants to download stuff or needs an Internet connection, skip that one and report them to me.

QUOTE
<<!>>: Suspicious data at a malware launch point.
This merely means that there is a program being launched there that is not default. But all the things that are suspicious check out.

As this didn't show something and you already supplied the next step (SilentRunners) we'll go on to the next one. Download Rootkit Revealer, and extract it. Double click on Rootkit Revealer and press "Scan". After the scan press "File"->"Save..." and copy/paste the contents in a new post.

While Rootkit Revealer is running, please do not do anything else as this will give distracting information in the log it produces.
NekoMx
Ok, i removed limewire and ran the Rootkit Revlealer and this is what it came up with:
(while i was running it my internet was turned off, norton AV was off and Zone alarms was off also, and this was the only program running)

Ok... So that doesn't help. Let's try another one. Download GMER from http://www.gmer.net

Save it somewhere safe & unzip it to desktop

Double click the gmer.exe to run it and select the rootkit tab, press scan and when it has finished press save and copy the log back here please.

How's the system doing now?
NekoMx
alright, the log was waaaay too big for the forums, so I uploaded the log to megaupload:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1C9EYUW9

6.18 MB.
sorry, ill have to post the log file in increments soon, as it will take long :)
Bobbi Flekman
Hi NekoMx,

QUOTE
6.18 MB.
sorry, ill have to post the log file in increments soon, as it will take long :)
I really don't like the sound of that. A typical gmer log is just about 02 lines or so... Please let me know when you have uploaded it or made other arrrangements. In the meantime I'll be brushing up on it as I don't use this program very often.

By the way... The link to megaupload doesn't want to live. It tries to connect but doesn't receive an answer.
NekoMx
hmmm, this isn't all of it, i stopped because i noticed that whenever i copied and pasted the log in, they get cut off, so ill have to upload it to another service i guess?
NekoMx
http://up-file.com/download/63a397370819/GMER.txt.html

here is the log again, i hope it works
Bobbi Flekman
Thanks, I've downloaded it. I've have called in the help of the author of GMer as he was quite interested when I mentioned 6.5 MB of log...

As soon as I know something I will post.

I did get the question if the checkbox "Show All" was unchecked?

For simplicity's sake I have deleted all the intervening posts where you tried to post the log in increments
NekoMx
heh thanks,
yeah the "show all" was checked =)
i shouldnt have done that?
well, I called in my cousin and he will look at my computer, and there is a great chance that i will format.

well, the reason for this is that this has been giving me an uneasy feeling for at least 2 or 3 weeks, and it is greatly affecting my school work and my life, so.... i might format, I will report back here, if i do or do not format.

thank you for your help once again =)
Bobbi Flekman
Hi NekoMx,

About the formatting. I think that that is the best option, but I am always quite reluctant in advising that. If you do not format, please run GMer again, but keep the "Show All" checkbox unchecked. LOL
NekoMx
sorry for the late response, but yeah, just stopping by to give my short report, i formatted and reinstalled most of my stuff and my computer is running great again,

thanks for all your help =)
