Hi zedekiah,

your log looks clean, but maybe it is based on something that is not shown.

Please create a list of programs that can be removed using Add/Remove Programs
Start HiJackThis. Click "Config"->"Misc Tools"->"Open Uninstall Manager" ->"Save List".
Save the log to a convenient location, and copy it into this thread.

Please download ATF Cleaner to your desktop.
Do not use it yet.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program. Is the system a little faster after this program?

Save Silent Runners.vbs to your desktop and double click on it to run. This will make a file called something like "Startup Programs (UserName) DateTime.txt". Double click on it, so it'll open in Notepad. Post the text here.

Thanks again for your help
zedekiah
I forgot to mention that almost everytime I start, restart or it wakes up the screen resolution is messed up. The settings don't change but everything on the screen is gigantic. Then I have to change the resolution a couple times to a couple different settings to get it back to relative normal. Don't know if that is related.

Thanks
zedekiah

Hi zedekiah,

Open "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. Select the following items:
  • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_02 <-- not bad but obsolete
  • Java Web Start <-- not bad but obsolete
  • Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
  • Viewpoint Media Player (Remove Only)
  • Viewpoint Toolbar (Remove Only)
and click "Remove" for each of them. If one of the uninstallers wants to download stuff or needs an Internet connection, skip that one and report them to me.

Update Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )

It should have next icon next to it:
    Select it and click Remove.
  • The current version can be downloaded from Sun here: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9' and press the 'Download' button. On the new web page, click the 'Accept License Agreement' button. Then select 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' in the Windows Platform area just below the Accept button.

How's the system now? Because the SilentRunners log didn't show anything either.

I really appreciate your help. It seems like its not freezing up as often. It still is a little slow. And now it won't shut down, it just gets hung up on "Saving Settings"

Do you have any other recommendations?

Thanks

Hi zedekiah,

How long have you waited for it to shut down? Sometimes it seems to take ages for my computer too, but I simply go away and check back later if it really closed down...

Do you run ATF Cleaner regularly? Defragment your hard disc... That could speed up the system. How much memory do you have? My standard answer to speed problems on a clean computer is add more memory. That always speeds up a computer. When memory gets exhausted, the system will turn to the hard disc as temporary memory (swap file) and hard discs are way slower than memory.
