Help me please!

I've got this annoying message -"your computer is infected!"- that keeps popping up on the lower right hand corner of my screen, along with two red circles that have a white X in the middle. I'm comfortable on computers but nothing about fixing viruses. I've done a search on the internet to figure out how to fix this, it seems to be a pretty common problem, but there seem to be so many 'solutions'. I don't want to delete something vital by mistake! Where on earth did I get this virus, or whatever it is?

The "Your Computer is Infected" message is most often SmitFruad so we'll run that first, then continue from there, if needed.




SpywareQuake/SpyFalcon/Smitfraud Removal

Note: These instructions are only for Windows 2000, XP Home, XP Pro, & 2003.

The following steps may not clean all of it, but should be a good start and will restore the desktop to default at least so you can proceed with complete removal using various tools.

1. Print out or save to notepad these instructions as we will need to do most steps offline and in SAFE MODE (so you won't have this window open to see the instruction from)

2. Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

3. Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

4. Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually.

5. Now please scan with HijackThis to produce a log. We will also need the log from Smitrem: The tool will create a log named rapport/txte in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your new topic.

Thank you LoPhatPhuud! I followed your instructions and the two red balloons disappeared, along with the 'warning'. I now have just one shield-shaped balloon left in the bottom right hand corner. When I boot up my computer it tells me that I may not have an an antivirus or something to that effect? Is this another virus or has this always been there and I just didn't notice???

As per your instructions, I have saved the rapport from Smitfraudfix and ran Hijackthis again and saved the log. Please see below.

The shield you are sering is Microsoft's Security Center telling you there is no AntiVirus program. Your HJT log confirms this. An AntiVIrus program is mandatory for today's internet. I see absolutely no protection of any kind on your laptop!!

AVG is a good, free anti-virus. You can download and install it from here;
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01

Also, you need an AntiSpyware program. Windows Defender from Microsoft is also free, here:

I strongly suggest you downloand and install both now.

THen run HiJackTHis again and post a new log in this thread.

Would you please use HiJackThis to produce a startup list and post it here:
1. From HJT main screen, click 'Config' button
2. Click 'Misc Tools' button
3. Check both boxes to the right of 'Generate StartupList Log' button
4. Click 'Generate StartupList Log' button
5. Click 'Yes' in the next dialog
6. Save the log and post a copy in this thread.
