Many thanks to anyone and everyone who can offer some advice on how to get me and my pc out of this mess!

I've done the requistite scans with Spy Bot (and also Spyware Doctor) and Kapersky online, but still this trojan persists.

Trojan horse Generic YZT

AVG alerted me to the presence of this trojan yesterday. I got AVG to delete it, but it just keeps on ticking. I turned off system restore and got AVG to rescan my pc in safe mode. Still no good. According to AVG, the little nuisance has lodged itself in a zipped program file and a couple of restore points of system restore.

I got Zapersky to do an online scan of my pc, and it came up with the following [note: some of the last one or two letters of the trojans' file names may have been inadvertently cropped when I saved the log file to disc]:

c:data Trojan-Downloader.Win32.IstBar.nh

C:\Documents and Settings\Robert\.housecall\Quarantine\javainstaller.jar-5ad1bcbe-41b93280.zip.bac_a02148/javainstaller/InstallerApplet.class Infected: Trojan-Downloader.Java.OpenStream.w

C:\Documents and Settings\Robert\.housecall\Quarantine\javainstaller.jar-5ad1bcbe-41b93280.zip.bac_a02148 ZIP: infected - 1

C:\Documents and Settings\Robert\.housecall\Quarantine\javainstaller.jar-5ad1bcbe-41b93280.zip.bac_a02148 CryptFF.b: infected - 1

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nxscript.exe/data0003 Infected: Trojan-Clicker.Win32.VB.dn

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nxscript.exe/data0004 Infected: Trojan.Win32.VB.sy

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nxscript.exe NSIS: infected - 2

UPDATE: Today I ran another scan with AVG and it couldn't find any problems; however, I'm still getting the same results with Kapersky's online scan.

Hi hedda,

Update Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )

It should have next icon next to it:
    Select it and click Remove.
  • The current version can be downloaded from Sun here: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8' and press the 'Download' button. On the new web page, click the 'Accept License Agreement' button. Then select 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' in the Windows Platform area just below the Accept button.

Please create a list of programs that can be removed using Add/Remove Programs
Start HiJackThis. Click "Config"->"Misc Tools"->"Open Uninstall Manager" ->"Save List".
Save the log to a convenient location, and copy it into this thread.

You might want to save this page on your favorites, so you can find it again when you return. You can also click on your name and click on "Find All Posts" to find your thread.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked". Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

Okay, I carried out the rest of your instructions. Although the 02-BHO file you wanted to me remove wasn't present in the HijackThis log. I should have mentioned that an online virus scanner got rid of the trojan 1st bar for me after I made my first post. Perhaps that has something to do with the absent file.

Anyway, here's the latest HijackThis log:

Well... Many webpages use Java, so it is best to install the new one as soon as possible.

I think that did it because this log looks clean.

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....
hedda
Thanks for the reply, Bobbi.

I got Kaspersky to do another online scan. According to it, the following are still infected:

C:\Documents and Settings\Robert\.housecall\Quarantine\javainstaller.jar-5ad1bcbe-41b93280.zip.bac_a02148/javainstaller/InstallerApplet.class Infected: Trojan-Downloader.Java.OpenStream.w

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nxscript.exe/data0004 Infected: Trojan.Win32.VB.sy

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nxscript.exe NSIS: infected - 2

It's strange that AVG, my resident anti-virus program, has not detected these problems, nor have several anti-virus/trojan online programs I've used.
Bobbi Flekman
Hi hedda,

Well these are pretty easy. The things found in the .housecall\Quarantine folder were already found by Housecall. So you can delete the entire folder. Personally I would only delete the contents of the folder ad leave the folder itself...

The nxscript.exe file can also be deleted.

Safe surfing,

BF
hedda
Bobbi, thanks to you I now have a virus-free pc.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
