Below is my current HiJack This log. The reason I am posting: I noticed today that my icons for my hard drive changed from the default to the Windows default. I assume by what others mean by Windows default is a piece of paper with the top right folded over and a small picture of a Windows box. Anyways, I have tried to do some searching online about this, mostly coming up with deleting autorun.inf from the root of the drives. That file does not exist on either drive. I have two drives - 120GB and 250GB hard - showing the same problem with the icon. The icons for floppy, dvd-rw, cd-rw and HP ScanJet are the same ones as before.

The only things I had loaded on my system, but have since removed, were two hard drive temperature monitoring programs (the 250GB HDD was getting too warm). The programs were HDD Temperature Pro & HDDlife. After removing them, the drives still have the other icon. When those programs were on the system, the HDD icons were there initially. I just noticed this morning that the icons were different.

Hi Steve,

You uninstalled the programs... Was there any error during the uninstall? Did the icons change when you installed the programs? I do see a few leftovers from the programs in the Hijackthis log, so I wonder if everything went okay.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as Export.bat and save it on your Desktop.



Locate Export.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. This will open Notepad with some text in it. Post that.

Below is the text from the batch file you had me run. About the hard drive icons: they're back, even though I haven't done anything on my computer after I posted the HiJack This log. I just let it run overnight and today, until I got home about 1/2 hour ago. I went into Windows Explorer and the icons are there now. No, there were no errors during the uninstall of the two programs. I don't know why they changed or what made them change back.

On a side note, do you know of a good HDD temperature monitoring program. My 250GB hard drive likes to get up to 47 Celsius; the other one (120GB) gets as high as 42 Celsius. Is this just too hot for either one?

Hi Steve,

Update Java:

• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
• Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
  
  It should have next icon next to it:
  Select it and click Remove.
• The current version can be downloaded from Sun here: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8' and press the 'Download' button. On the new web page, click the 'Accept License Agreement' button. Then select 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' in the Windows Platform area just below the Accept button.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

O4 - Startup: HDD temperature.lnk = C:\Program Files\PalickSoft\HDD Temperature\HDDTemperature.exe

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked".

Ok... Then I consider that solved. Only means that you had to export the Regsitry for nothing, but okay....

I have no idea... I am not much of a hardware man. Maybe you can ask somewhere in the hardware section.

This log looks clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2
