Full Version: Definite Infection of some kind
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
SpaceBear67
Hello,

I've got a definite infection of somekind - my HIJACK THIS log is at the end of this message. Norton AV, SpyBot, and Adaware find nothing now (though Norton did find a Trojan a few days ago that it removed). Now, although nothing is being found by Norton, I'm seeing several "Unauthorized Access Blocked" alerts in NAV, and seeing connections to "notyourbusiness.com" and "jwikkszswffjdwep.com", which are both registered to a suspious entity.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi SpaceBear67,

Your log is quite clean!

You might want to save this page on your favorites, so you can find it again when you return. You can also click on your name and click on "Find All Posts" to find your thread.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {77701e16-9bfe-4b63-a5b4-7bd156758a37} - (no file)

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked". Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

Save Silent Runners.vbs to your desktop and double click on it to run. This will make a file called something like "Startup Programs (UserName) DateTime.txt". Double click on it, so it'll open in Notepad. Post the text here.

Hi SpaceBear67,

Both of the logs looks clean now... Is it still going on?
SpaceBear67
Bobbi,

I see nothing out of the ordinary at the moment - I'll monitor it today and let you know.

Thanks for your help!
SpaceBear67
Hi Bobbi,

Still looks clear - looks like that one item that we removed with HiJackThis did the trick.

Thanks!
Bobbi Flekman
ok :)

This log looks clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....
SpaceBear67
I'm still seeing "Unauthorized Access" going on in NAV:

Actor: C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe (PID=732)
Target: C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\SAVScan.exe
Action: Unauthorized access
Reaction: Unauthorized access stopped

And I see this message which doesn't appear to be anything that I did (I removed my IP so I could post the message here).

Details: The user has created a rule to "block" communications.
Inbound UDP packet.
Local address, service is (REMOVED THIS TO POST)
Remote address,service is (207.46.150.226,5004).
Process name is "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe".

Hmmmm.... Let's try to see if we can get some answers.

Download Rootkit Revealer, and extract it. Double click on Rootkit Revealer and press "Scan". After the scan press "File"->"Save..." and copy/paste the contents in a new post.
SpaceBear67
Hmmm. I downloaded and installed RootkitRevealer - when I ran it, it got as far as detecting 3 issues, and then when the status bar read "Scanning HKLM\SYSTEM\WPA\StartHash-6KCM6KFTX6MD62" it just stayed there. Looking in the Task manager, I can see that an .exe is running (different name each time I run RootkitRevealer). Eventually, the program times out with a message "There is a problem with CMD.EXE on your system that prevents RootkitRevealer from accurately scanning your system".

Each time I run it, it finds one additional issue, here is the output from the 3rd attempt to run the program:

That's the first time I heard about that. Let's try another one... Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:

Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement, leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked, click > scan then > next

You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).

Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"
SpaceBear67
Looks like maybe there's a newer version of the software at the link than what you describe? The version I downloaded and ran didn't have a scan through Windows Explorer option, just had a message saying "Scan targets: Hidden Processes Hidden Files and Folders" and a scan button. I clicked the scan button and it scanned and reported back "Scan Complete No Hidden items found". It didn't make a log on the desktop either.

Hi SpaceBear67,

It is good that Blacklight didn't find anything. So on to what you posted earlier.

Could it be that you've blocked too many programs? Winlogon.exe is a valid program, it can be misused though. And the IP that you posted from the communication is an address that belongs to Microsoft. Since the process uis Internet Explorer I guess that you were using WindowsUpdate or something...

Hi Bobbi,

I'm guessing that could be the case, I am overly cautious with this PC since I use it for so much (and it's the only one connected to the internet).

Thanks for your help. I'm going to keep an eye on things, but I consider this matter closed as I have not seen the activity that lead me to open the thread since we deleted the entry in Hijack this.

Ok... Then I'll regard this thread as closed. If somthing comes up though you can always post to get my attention.
