Full Version: AHH I GOT THE AIM VIRUS!!!! SOMEONE HELP!!!
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
Dragon03
Hello, so my situation is that while logged on to AIM i got a link sent to me under my friends screen name. I was along of the lines of "what do you think of this pic to be used for myspace?" So i clicked it and in an instant i was infected by what i believe is the webhancer virus. In a panic I logged of AIM and tried to delete some of the files that were installed on my hard drive I do not know if this was a good or bad move on my part. My comp be began to act strange in that it would shut down by itself but after a couple of reboots that has stopped. Okay so I ran two programs Ad-ware SE and AVG which was the suggestion of one of my friends. The programs did their job and I feel like their is no change to my comp. If anyone can assest my situation and give me some advice I would greatly appreciate it. Also this is my very first virus infection ever so i am a complete noob so pls be patient with me.

Here is my Hijack This Log:

Hi Dragon03,

Update Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )

It should have next icon next to it:
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
  • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
3. RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra PLUS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Do not do anything with these yet!

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Highlight Safe Mode and hit enter.

Once in Safe Mode, go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
  • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
  • In the scriptline to execute field type or paste c:\bfu\alcanshorty.bfu
  • Press Execute and let it do it's job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
Reboot into normal windows and post a new HiJackThis log.

Hi Dragon03,

Go to Online malware scan and submit C:\WINDOWS\system32\redist.dll.

Tell me the result. Do the same for C:\WINDOWS\system32\w0010829.dll.

Please download Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to your desktop.
  • Close all windows before continuing.
  • Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run this program as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 10 seconds. Click OK
  • When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button, your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button.
  • You will receive a Done Scanning message, click OK.
  • When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Your computer will then shutdown.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
If you receive a message from your firewall about this program accessing the internet please allow it.

If you receive a runtime error '339' please download MSWINSCK.OCX from the link below and place it in your C:\Windows\System32 Directory.

Hi Dragon03,

From what came back from Jotti's it's obvious that you can delete the file (C:\WINDOWS\system32\redist.dll).

This log looks clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....
Dragon03
THANKS A LOT, This horrible nightmare is nearly coming to a end, however there still are some things that the virus has affected.

The Virus has made my window xp firewall turn off and I cant seem to turn it back on

The text of my icons on my desktop no longer blend in with the wall paper. The text now has a border with blue backround and then the wallpaper.

This is just a concern and not really a problem, but the trojans the malware scan found in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\redist.dll are no longer a problem, right? Since the file is no longer in my hard drive

Here is a fresh highjack log, just incase:

Hi Dragon03,

QUOTE
The Virus has made my window xp firewall turn off and I cant seem to turn it back on
I don't work with XP all the time so I have no clear answer for that. I will have to check it out, and in the meantime you can help me with an export of the Registry.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as Options.txt on your Desktop.

QUOTE
RegSearch Options File

[Search]
firewall
[Exclude]

[Options]
Filter=KVDLUI

Download Registry Search and extract it. Doubleclick the icon to run and click on "Import...". Select the file you created above. Click "OK" and Registry Search will search the Registry and report what it finds. Post that here.

QUOTE
The text of my icons on my desktop no longer blend in with the wall paper. The text now has a border with blue backround and then the wallpaper.
can you rightclick on the desktop, choose "Properties" and change the color of the font?

QUOTE
This is just a concern and not really a problem, but the trojans the malware scan found in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\redist.dll are no longer a problem, right? Since the file is no longer in my hard drive
Not that I know, the file is gone so it can't infect.
Dragon03
Hello, sorry it took so long but here are the results of the registry search:

You imported my example file, not the file you had to create. To explain how RegSearch works I added an example of the Options file.
Dragon03
Okay, Im still a little unclear on your directions but i gave it another shot, hope this is right:

Hi Dragon03,

QUOTE
Okay, Im still a little unclear on your directions but i gave it another shot, hope this is right:
This is what I wanted :) Let's see if this helps me...

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as fixme.reg and save it on your Desktop.

QUOTE
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center]
"FirewallDisableNotify"=-
"FirewallOverride"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsFirewall\DomainProfile]
"EnableFirewall"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsFirewall\StandardProfile]
"EnableFirewall"=-
Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it.
You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".
Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

The above Registry file was written specifically for this infection on this person's computer. It is NOT to be used on another computer, as it may cause damage that could result in a format!

Is Windows firewall working again?
Dragon03
YES!! for the love of god. Thanks again, I can finally turn my firewall on and off again. I still have the issue about my desktop icons. Ill post a pic so people can see what im talking about.

Bobbi Flekman
Well... Part way there,

to get rid of the blue blocks, right click on the dekstop, select "Arrange Icons By" and uncheck "Lock Web Items On Desktop".

If they aren't gone then right click on "My Computer", and choose "Properties", "Advanced". Click on the "Settings" button in the box by "Performance" and select "Use Drop Shadows For Icon Labels On The Desktop". Click "Apply" and they should be gone.
Dragon03
Sorry tried both methods and still no change.
Bobbi Flekman
Strange.... It should work. Do you have any "desktop enhancers" running? Programs like TweakUI or something?
Dragon03
Not to my knowledge, no
Bobbi Flekman
I would have to check it out on a XP machne what these instructions actually do to the Registry. I will give a new answer with instructions tomorrow, as I don't have one at the ready...
Dragon03
Hello? Is there anyword on a solution to my desktop issue?
Bobbi Flekman
I've been messing around with an XP machine to see what happens when you change the checks that I've given you. And I have found one of them, but not the other...

I'm still playing around with it, though I don't understand why this doesn't work on your computer. Searching the net, I only find this as a solution to the "boxes around the icon text".
