Full Version: White wall paper hijacker - won't go away, can't change

I caught a wallpaper hijacker. Blue screen with red text that gave me the old "You are infected, click her to ...."

I did not click.

I am running Mcafee, spywareblaster, adaware, spybot, and a trial version of counterspy (which I am going to uninstall). All versions are up to date.

I got rid of the blue screen, now I have a totally white wallpaper with no text. I can't change it. Once or twice it disappeared, but reappeared when I re-started. It only seems (at this time) to be under my profile (Jack).

System seems to take a while to load and changing users and loading preferences seems to take a long time.

Hi jackger,

Update Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )

    It should have next icon next to it:
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:

Please move HijackThis to another location, preferably c:\Program Files\HijackThis. Anywhere is fine, other than your Desktop or a Temp folder. If HijackThis is in a temporary folder you run the risk of accidentally deleting the backups or it clutters your desktop with all the backups.
If you use Windows XP it might be that you just double clicked on the file HijackThis.exe, but that only extracts the file to a temporary folder. Please select the file and Extract it to a folder.

How do you make a permanent folder:

Click "My Computer", then "C:\" and then on "Program Files".
In the menu bar, "File"->"New"->"Folder".
That will create a folder named "New Folder", which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have "C:\Program Files\HijackThis". Put your HijackThis.exe there.

Go to Panda ActiveScan and do a full system scan.
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log.

1) thank you for your response.

2) I am running Hijack this from a permanent folder *c:/programs/hijackthis/hijackthis.exe. This is not the extract, but primary program.

3) I did uninstall the Java app, then went to the site you attached to re-load the most recent version.

4) I ran into trouble trying to run the scan at Panda. When I went to the link you provided, I clicked the option for "my Computer" and got an error - "Error on page". I disable pop-up bocker, and tried again, still no luck. I tried the icon for "Scan a Hard drive" and still got the same message.

5) I then restarted my computer and tried to do the scan with the same results, so I have not been able to run the Panda scan.

6) I re-ran HiJackThis and am including logfile below.

7) BTW - still white screen.

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked".

Restart your computer in Safe Mode. How do I Safe Boot my computer?

Show hidden files. How do I show hidden files?
At the end if the fix you can return the files to hidden status if you want.

Folders and files with a tilde (~), means that there is a file/folder that starts with the six characters in front of the tilde, note that there may be spaces in the name. If there are more than one, please report them back and do not delete!

Delete the following files in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00001.exe
C:\Windows\System32\scmsg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe <-- Be careful not to delete the svchost.exe in C:\Windows\System32. This is legit, and your computer cannot run without it!

Delete the following folders in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\Documents And Settings\Jeanne\Application Data\EXTRAF~1
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\creative grey store road

Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

You might want to save this page on your favorites, so you can find it again when you return. You can also click on your name and click on "Find All Posts" to find your thread.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked".

Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

Download Microsoft Task Scheduler Command Line Utility.
Extract and copy the contents to your Windows folder.

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it.
You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".

I don;t know if it will help, but when I get properties for my wallpaper, I only see the "General" tab and the address of the file is "file://C:\WINDOWS\warnhp.html"

I Also found something interesting about this white wall paper I think it is an app called WARNHP.HTML:

I moved my cursor up to the top left corner of my screen, near my "MyComputer" icon. I missed and went straight to the top corner of the screen. THere on the all white background I saw a small downturned arrow, along with a gray-ish title bar. In the top RIGHT corner was something akin to a Minimize button. When I hit it the whole think shrunk to a 3 inch by 3inch white box in my upper LEFT Corner. Which now stays there.

I right clicked on the box, which gave me a drop down list which included "backward links" When I click this , the box dieplayed a white background with a a "GOOGLE box" appears with original working to "Download free removal programs". IN the Google seach box is this "link:file://C:\WINDOWS\warnhp.html"
THERE IS AN INVISIBLE "CLOSE BUTTON" in upper RIGHT, which I clicked and the PROGRAM CLOSED!!!!!!!!!!!!. I looked for this app in my windows directly and can not see (I have show hidden turned on), etc. but can not see it.

Bobbi, the wallpaper is gone!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not convinced this did it. I did not remove any programs, or change anything (that I know of???) I am going to turn my computer OFF tomorrow and will re-post.

Can we keep this thread open for a little while because I am fearful it really is not gone.

I'm not convinced it's gone either. Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as Options.txt on your Desktop.

I am sorry that I have nto had an opportunity to respond, but I am DESPERATE for help and do nto know where to go.

About 5 days after my last post something horrific happened to my machine and I have been trying to recover without success.

My folder: "c:\\documents and settings\all users\documents" is no longer accessible!!!! I can not access thousands of documents!!! including years of digital pictures!!! I am devistated!!!! When I try to access this folder I get a message "you are not authorized to this folder" Any searches that I have done do not find any of the images, word docs, and excel files located inside this folder. I believe that they are still there as these files in total would be very big in terms of disk space size and I do not see any change in the free disk space for my c: drive.

In addition, I have 5 users on this machine and all of their "XXXX documents" folders (ie: "jacks documents") which I believe were located INSIDE of the c:\\documents and settings" folder all appear now to reside at the root level of the drive.

I have checked each user's recycle bin, nothing.
When I look at the properties section of "c:\\documents and settings\all users\documents" folder, it appears to be clasified as "Read only" I have checked this off, hit apply, and then OK, but it immediately reverts back to "read only".

I am desperate for help. I cannot even begin to imaging the aspect of losing so many images and memories. And lo and behold, I have just purchased an external drive to do backups. It is sitting on my desk and I was waiting to resolve the "White wall paper" issue before I installed it.

Can you please provide any direction or guidance on this issue.

Oh how I would live with White wallpaper if only I could get these files back.

I think I resolved this issue but I am extremely perplexed at what happen. Somthing changed the name of my "Shared Documents" folder to just "Documents". It moved all the "user specific" document folders up to my root, AND it waxed the "Group and users", Owner, authority and permissions on the re-named "document" folder so there was no-one assigned to the folder. I added back in myself and Administrator to the "Owners", then permissions, and groups and fortunately my files came back. I hope to god that this never happens to anyone else, and if it does, this is now a "known" issue.

I have been doing this stuff for a long time, and I am certain beyond all possible expectation that I did nothing to cause this to happen.

Next step - immediate backup!!!!!!!!!!! Any recommendation on a good backup program that will allow me to do full, incremental, and compressed back-ups? Then full scans.

Sorry for the extreme cry for help, but I have never seen anything like this before, and I was absolutely diswrought over the idea of losing so many memories.

Will now be following up on the execution of the advised steps to resolve the original issue.
