Hi, just running into a few problems trying to get rid of this Zolob Trojan that Microsoft Antispyware Beta 1 continues to pick up but fails to fully remove. What can I do about it?

If you are on Windows XP, extract the file. Do not just doubleclick on it! This opens HijackThis in a temporary folder. This would interfere with the possibility to make back-ups.

Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the Temp folder. Then, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and click "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that and copy and paste its contents in this thread.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet. Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Oops.... Sorry, I just wondered why the information looked so weird, and then it dawned on me that I made a slight mistake. What I copied was a piece of code that I use for other infections, and I didn't update it completely. Can you do the same instructions with this one (this is the updated one!)

I followed your instructions with the new text and all that happened this time was two unrecognised files (named "notepad" and "regedit") were created on my desktop when the .bat file was run. What's wrong there?

This is decidedly weird. Let's start with something else, go to Panda ActiveScan, and scan our computer. Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log.

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you, only just got back on the net. I can't get the Panda ActiveScan to run because the firewall on the school network wont let it run. What now?

Well, it's been two weeks since you posted last. I would need a new log from HijackThis to start from. Who knows what has changed in the meantime.

Could the school firewall also be the source of the other troubles? Have you talked with the school SysAdmin?

I have talked to our SysAdmin but I basically got an answer that he was too busy to worry about something that didn't seem to be too much of a threat as he's not around an awful lot. The other problems is the programs that don't want to run. I asked for an export from the Registry a few posts back, and it didn't work. While it did a few posts before.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

1. Restart your computer
2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
• You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
• If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
• DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
• If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Reboot back into Windows and post a new HijackThis Log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Once again, my apologies for the delayed respose. The blame is on my shoulders this time though as in my wisdom I failed to realise the posts had run onto a second page. About 4 days back I downloaded and ran the free trial of the Panda Titan program and it seems to have removed Trojan Virus that has been so very co-operative. I'd just like to say a huge thanks for all you've done and if you would just be able to have a quick glance over this log and make sure everything now seems to be clean it would be much appreciated.

This log looks clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Once again huge thanks for aeverything. I've downloaded the programs you listed that I didn't already have and my interent is now running through Opera (which I didn't even know existed until last night and seems to be more user friendly than Mozilla and Firefox).

If there is one running problem it's that for a number of months now I have been attempting to download Windows XP SP2 onto my computer (only running SP1) but have had no sucess, all I get from microsoft are the security updates.

Have you contacted Microsoft about this? What does the Windows Genuine Advantage thingy say? If you have a legit Windows you should be able to download SP-2. You could also order it from them. I can't think of other solutions to the problem...

I've now had enough time to work things out properly for myself and service pack 2 is up and running, along with the updates to existing programs that can be done as a result (Windows Defender etc). Hopefully all's smooth sailing from now on so thanks for everything.
