Hey there! I'm almost positive I have a virus. However, any scan I do comes up with nothing. I have the ZoneAlarm Security Suite. I also went to Trend Micro but am unable to run a scan there, perhaps due to a virus. I am getting a message every time I run Microsoft Word. It first pops up saying "The file Normal already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?" I click No then a box pops up for me to save it anyway. I click cancel, then have to click to close it again. Then another box pops up saying "Changes have been made that affect the global template, Normal. Do you want to save those changes?" I click no and Word finally closes. On the last message box there is a button for getting help. I clicked it and it took me to the Microsoft website for information on this error. There were four reasons that this problem could be occurring. I tried doing all the three that were not virus related and none of them worked. The only other option left was that there was a macrovirus (it said anyway).

Another problem that just started today is an error message is now coming up regularly saying "vsmon.exe - Application Error The exception Privileged instruction(0xc0000096) occurred in the application at location 0x5le0de01. Click on OK to terminate the program." I do that then a message comes up from the ZoneAlarm Security Suite saying "The True Vector Internet Monitor has shut down" and it asks if I want to restart it. I do, then a few minutes later I get the first error message again.

I'm also getting some problems on some websites, and a few other little things on my computer. I would really like to fix this and am hopeful that you can help! Here is a logfile of HijackThis that I just ran:

Hi dentsch,

Click "My Computer", then on "C:\".
In the menu bar, "File"->"New"->"Folder".
That will create a folder named "New Folder", rename this to "BFU".

Download Merijn's Brute Force Uninstaller and extract it to the new folder. Doubleclick on BFU.exe, and click the round green icon (open script URL) . Copy the following link: http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu and click Ok. After that click execute and when the script has finished restart the computer.

Please post a new log from HijackThis after this.

Please create a list of programs that can be removed using Add/Remove Programs
Start HiJackThis. Click "Config"->"Misc Tools"->"Open Uninstall Manager" ->"Save List".
Save the log to a convenient location, and copy it into this thread.

This log looks clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2
