Hello,

Kinda a long story - will try to keep it as short as possible.
I have been having all sorts of issues with my computer trying to connect itself to the internet, and finding weird .exe and .dll files and task processes which were kinda suspicious. I was running Ad-ware every time I booted my computer and every time I disconnected from the internet and it would find a gazillion things but wouldn't fix the problem. I compared my task list to AnswersthatWork.com and found out I had a virus but Norton wouldn't recognize it (file netmon.exe). I couldn't end the netmon task or delete the exe, I think eventually I booted into safe mode and changed the extension to add .renamed and then I could end the process, then I deleted the file - although I think it's still on my computer I don't think it's running. So I went on a hunt in my computer - through all the program files, WINNT, and system32 folders, because I noticed the file names that were suspicious all occurred around the same date - and I either deleted them or added .renamed to the extension - everything is still in my recycle bin if it needs to be reloaded. I booted my computer into safe mode and ran Ad-ware and Norton about 10 times this weekend (or maybe only five) trying to see if anything new was extinguished.

I thought Newdotnet.dll was bad too - so I renamed the file and the folder, and it still tries to run everytime I boot my computer and now Ultimate Task Manager tells me that WMI is not loading on my computer - which I don't think is good although it appears I can run all programs, print, and connect to the internet just fine. NewdotNet still does not appear able to boot itself up. Then I got a pop-up asking me if I wanted to enhance my internet experience - and I clicked on it (part of my method of tracking down who and what to search for in my computer) and it said SYSC00 wasn't working or something - and when I did a search I found your forum and saw someone who had ALL the same weird programs I had on my computer! Holy cow! So then I figured I should ask you - you seem to be the experts - that is pretty much all my story. Oh - one last question - Norton usually picks up a couple files when I'm on the internet - I have dial-up - and it tells me that it had a successful quarantine, and then it says "Access Denied". ?? Is it or is it not able to do it's job? Norton did delete the upififx.exe file that the computer seems to be missing... (see below)

I think your emoticons are funny - this was definitely me over the past week! I know it was bad of me to try to fix it all myself when I only have intermediate computer abilities (this has been extremely humbling). Thank you for all your help!

Hi raeray80,

You have quite some stuff running free. We'll get to them later. First I would like to see which programs can be uninstalled, so...

Start HiJackThis. Click "Config"->"Misc Tools"->"Open Uninstall Manager" ->"Save List".
Save the log to a convenient location, and copy it into this thread.

To uninstall NewDotNet, go here and follow the directions: http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html

Hi Jennifer,

QUOTE
Here's the uninstall list - new.net uninstall indicates it was successful - thanks for your help!
That's good. At least one down. Let's see what we can do further.

Open "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. Select the following items:
  • Enhanced Ads by Zeno removal
  • MediaTickets by OIN
  • PeoplePC: PeoplePal Toolbar 6.2
  • Windows Overlay Components
  • Zeno Search Assistant removal
and click "Remove" for each of them. If one of the uninstallers wants to download stuff or needs an Internet connection, skip that one and report them to me.

Please restart your computer afterwards and post a new log from HijackThis.
raeray80
Hi Bobbi,

I tried to uninstall everything you suggested, but for Enhanced Ads by Zeno, Windows Overlay Components, and Zeno search Assistant, I received the message "An error occurred while trying to remove "(program)". It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove "(program)" from the Add/Remove Program list?" To which I reply "no".

I have two Zeno files in my recycle bin - both were shortcuts - "Zeno" and "Z_start". Also in my recycle bin are a bunch of .exe files that have an icon with a "Z" with a magnifying glass superimposed on top. They are lwinprai, twinmrai, kwinlrai, mwinkrai, twinrrai, lwinrrai, lwinqrap. They kept running at various point in my task manager so I deleted them hoping they couldn't keep working their dirty work from the Recycle Bin - originally located in my WINNT/system 32 folder. I cannot find anything in my Recycle Bin related to Windows Overlay Components. It seems from the Hijack This log that particular program is looking for the upififx file - which is actually in my Norton quarantine list.

I wish I had not downloaded The Ultimate Troubleshooter - I think that thing has caused more problems than it solved; I've sent them two emails since Sunday and have had no response.

Oh ho! It just happened again. I get a little Internet Exploror pop-up that has the title bar "Internet Enhancer" and it asks if I want to enhance my internet experience. I clicked "yes" to find out who the culprit was and now I get an error: Title Bar: "SYSC00" Error Message: "Run-time error "5": Invalid procedure call or argument" (I don't know if you wanted to know this but I've a bunch of your entries and it seems better to give too much info than too little)

Thanks again a gazillion for all your help! You must like doing this :)
Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

QUOTE
I tried to uninstall everything you suggested, but for Enhanced Ads by Zeno, Windows Overlay Components, and Zeno search Assistant, I received the message "An error occurred while trying to remove "(program)". It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove "(program)" from the Add/Remove Program list?" To which I reply "no".
You can remove them from Add/Remove ;)

QUOTE
The Recycle Bin can always be emptied out. In fact that was one opf my next instructions.

QUOTE
I wish I had not downloaded The Ultimate Troubleshooter - I think that thing has caused more problems than it solved; I've sent them two emails since Sunday and have had no response.
Then by all means uninstall it!

QUOTE
Oh ho! It just happened again. I get a little Internet Exploror pop-up that has the title bar "Internet Enhancer" and it asks if I want to enhance my internet experience. I clicked "yes" to find out who the culprit was and now I get an error: Title Bar: "SYSC00" Error Message: "Run-time error "5": Invalid procedure call or argument" (I don't know if you wanted to know this but I've a bunch of your entries and it seems better to give too much info than too little)
Always click no! It might be tempting to find out who it is, but all that happens is that your computer will be infected again. So for next time(s), if there are popups, just close them, don't download anything. And any info that you can give.... Please do. It might be important, it might give you another look at things like this info I just gave.

C:\WINNT\system32\VirtualExpander\VirtualExpander.exe What is this program? Do you know that?

Click "My Computer", then on "C:\".
In the menu bar, "File"->"New"->"Folder".
That will create a folder named "New Folder", rename this to "BFU".

Download Merijn's Brute Force Uninstaller and extract it to the new folder. Doubleclick on BFU.exe, and click the round green icon (open script URL) . Copy the following link: http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu and click Ok. After that click execute and when the script has finished restart the computer.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked".

Restart your computer in Safe Mode. How do I Safe Boot my computer?

Show hidden files. How do I show hidden files?
At the end if the fix you can return the files to hidden status if you want.

Delete the following files in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\WINNT\SYSC00.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\RpcSs.exe <-- Take care not to delete RpcSs.dll!!!. Without that your computer will not start
C:\WINNT\upififx.exe

Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

No need to uninstall. I can't know all programs, so if I see something that I don't know, then I ask about it.

(It appears to be running all the time. You can probably see that I have been utilizing Firefox instead of IE for my web browser.)
Explorer.exe is the shell of Windows. It runs all the time. The first instance of Explorer that gets started will create the desktop, taskbar, etc. All the things you see when the computer is done starting up and logging in.

Please download SWSC from this page. After that launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as Fixme.bat and save it on your Desktop.

CODE
SWSC delete "Network Monitor"
SWSC delete RpcSssvc

Locate FixMe.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. This will uninstall two services in your log. After that restart your computer and post a new log from HijackThis.

I don't see a firewall in your log, goto Sygate Personal Firewall or Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, and install it.

How's the system running? Any strange goings-on?
raeray80
Hi Bobbi -
Nope - nothing funny going on! Thank goodness!

Everything went smoothly with the fixme.bat fix.

Here is my hijack this log.

Thanks again for your help!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Sygate Personal Firewall or Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....
