Personally i dont think i am infected but i have a big problem. I am not sure what i have done but i cannot run any .exe files, or whatever it is that runs them isnt working. I cannot post a highjackthis log because i cannot use the program. I think it is something in the registry that may have broke. I dnt no.

It will repair your exe file association in the registry.

its win xp. I dont know what has happened to it. It wont even let me open notepad.

Copy notepad exe to your desktop. Then rename notepad.exe as notepad.com


Double click on notepad.com to open an instance of notepad.


Copy the contents of the code box to notepad.
Name the fix fix.reg
Save as Type all Files.
Double click on fix.reg and say yes to the prompt. We'll see if htis will run.

Nope no luck. Shall i boot in safe mode and then merge those registry changes then?

Tried in safe mode also no luck. I think nearly all my file associations have gone.

Also if this might help i get these strange error message but i cannot understand them, i think they are in some format that i cannot read so they just come up as boxes. The only way i can use a txt file is by starting it as a new file.

Were you able to use notepad.com?What happened when you tried to merge the file? Did you get an error?

If you make a copy of regedit.exe from your windows folder onto the desktop and then rename that copy as regedit.com you should be able to open the registry by double clicking on regedit.com (unlessthe com file association is cooked too)

Once in the registry, click on file on the toolbar. Click Import.

Guide Windows to the file you created. Now see if your programs will open.

IF so, go to Start >Run and paste in thie command and then press enter:

regsvr32 zipfldr.dll


Wait for the success message.

See if you are able to open a zip file now.

If you are, then go here

notepad.com didnt open it was unable to. No error message occured in its opening. I get the error message when i boot up windows, before i log on, and just before i shut down. I will just try the step you recommened.

regedit.com dosent work for me. No error message, the file just dosent open.

I think you do have a bigger problem then.

Okay what happened was i start my computer. Log on. A few programs bleep at me saying there is registry changes. I thought mmmm i havent install anything recently and so i block all of these changes.

I am too tired to continue this tonight. It appears you have some major damage. Command prompt is great. But I am not sure that is going to start either or if you'll be able to do a system restore. Let me know if it does and I'll see tomorrow what we can try.

But again, I am not sure it is going to start for you. I hope you have a recent restore point if it does. You'll be going back in time. You won't lose any personal files, but any system changes made since that date will be lost.

There were details, but there were so many i did not take my time to file through them singaly. I did about 20, then thought that ad-watch one of lavasofts programs to monitor changes on your registry would know what action to take, so i let the program do its job and decide wether or not to accept or deny changes.

You can't do that. If you are not going to read the warnings and make the decisions, then don't use that program. It will always deny changes. It will undo changes you make and it often interferes with our attempts to clean up. But I don't think anything it did would have resulted in this situation.



Since I can't access much, I don't know what is going on. But I do suspect you are missing a large chunk of the registry.

Try the system restore. If you didn't read my last post, go back. I am not confident it will even start. I doubt it will. But do give it a shot.

Woot thanks your system restore is working. It booted in safe mode with command prompt. I have just chosen a system checkpoint from the previous day. I have 2 computer this one is networked to the one with my problems so if there is any programs that could have been run across a network, it could have helped, sorry i did not disclose this earlier. Keeping my fingers crossed that restore point is a good one. I'm surprised it started. But it did.

You let me know in in a PM that the changes involved a program named extension handler? That would be possibly making changes to the area of the registry which handles file extensions and allows you to run files. I believe that was the area which was damaged.

Sorry i may be wrong in stating it is a program but a registry entry. A program may have affected it though. The problem i expirenced, explained in this topic http://gladiator-antivirus.com/forum/index...showtopic=31702, persists everytime i system restore my computer.

I think i have finally solved this problem. Strangely some of the registry values mentioned here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q254950/, were being added to my registry.

I think that problem is fixed now i think all that needs a check is my HJT log.

I have ,erged your other post with the original. Please do not start another topic on this subject. That causes confusion.


The changres to your registry involved file associations. By not allowing those, you rendered your system pretty much disabled earlier.

If you persist in "Fixing" things yourself, I am going to lock this topic.

What is making these changes and which programs are asking you to ok them please.


You have too many anti spyware programs running in the background. They can cause conflicts and interfer with each other.

Plesae disable all but one of the anti spyware scanners.

When finished, post a new log please.

You're running Bit Comet. A lot of infections get passed though those clients.

I wonder if SpywareGuard was the program giving you the warnings about the changed file associations. Or was it Ad-Watch? Or what?

Exactly. Once AD-Watch sees a change it prompts to either keep it or revert. IF this reverts or pends so the change is not made, and then you have an incorrect File association resulting, as you did for many of yours, then you lose the ability to run some programs and in your case, just about everything. And yes, running Tea Timer and AD-Watch together is a very bad idea. That's why I had you decide to run just one scanner in the background. You can re-enable Spywareguard and see what happens.

Yes everything is running fine. Ad-watch stops bleeping at me. I think i will disable it in future and just use teatimer. Thanks for your help and enourmous amount of time. I was glad you could help someone so computer illiterate as me. I think i will not touch another computer for a month haha. Is there any program i could use to see were or what is influencing registry changes, maybe for future use?

Nothing I can recommend for beginners. Be careful what changes you make and do be sure to create a new restore point now that everything is working.


In fact:

Once you have rebooted a time or two, be sure everything is in working order. Flush your system restore points. Once you do that you will not be able to correct any problems you may have now by going back to a point before today.


After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.

Check the box labeled Turn off System restore.


Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.
