It seems I may have more than just a "little" problem...
Initially, I was going to ask for help as I think I might have an undetected problem as my cable internet connection is closer to a 1955 dial up speed & action. However, after attempting for over 2 hours to download several spyware, virus scan, etc. programs, I am unable to that. Even one from Microsoft - they cannot even verify I'm running a windows operating system!
I really need to find out what is wrong! Can anyone help me... Please!
Thanks
Arlene

See if you can get hijackthis. It's a small download.
Post a hijackthis log please. Download and then extract Hijackthis.exe to a new folder. Do not run it from the zip the desktop or a temp folder.
Here's a link:
http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zipDo not remove anything using HijackThis. Save the log and then copy and paste the contents into your next reply here in this same topic. It lists many types of entries. Some are good, and others need to be removed. We will help you sort it out.

I hope this works. Let's give it a shot.
I have attached Hijackthis.zip
Download the attachment. Save and then extract the contents to a folder of its own.
Run hijackthis.exe and scan. Post the log.

Tried to save and open from your attachment, would not work. Saved it to a disc at work and the file would not open when I got it to my home PC.
Formatted the disc from here and tried saving from attachment and kept getting a format error on the disc (new disc?).
I'm still at a loss as to what to do now. Also seems like I'm getting slower & slower!
Thanks for your patience.

I am not hopeful, but let's try Start Dreck to get a report.
Go here and download StartDreck
http://www.niksoft.at/download/startdreck.htmUnzip and run StartDrek.exe:
Click save. Name the log. Open the log you just saved.
Run it in Notepad. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply here.

I'm doomed!
Still getting the "not able to find the server" message.
Is there any hope without going the horrible route of a reformat?
Crossing my fingers that there is! I have faith in you!
Thanks,
Arlene

When you got that file I attached it was a zip. Do you have an unzipping program? A lot of people running windows98 don't have one.
Was it that it wouldn't unzip? Or was it that after being unzipped that hijackthis.exe wouldn't run for you?

I do have Winzip and have used it for years - It wasn't that - I couldn't even get it to "save target as" - would start, then I would get the "server not found" error message and it would quit the download. Tried to download, still got the same error message, so I couldn't even open it.
The only successful download I've had was one from Microsoft in a regular update.

Did you try this in Safe mode? I would.

If you can, get anew copy of hijaxkthis and take it to the problem computer.
See if you can unzip it in safe mode and run it.
If not, then we'll try some commands and see if we can get some information. This may be a tedious job. If you don't feel like going through a long process, saving your files to CD and formatting and reinstalling is an option too.
Let me know how you do. Hope you have a better day today.
