Hi

Last week I suddenly experienced a major slowdown: Most of the programs do lower performances, also the sound buzzes (So..o...o...un..d). After i checked my sound driver and defragmentatet my hard drive i figured, it might be an infection since Norton was recently blocked by a swarm of auto-deleted files, and when i checked the quarantine folder, it contained about 1000 files of the java.class type (i deletet them all, eversince, the quarantine is empty)

I remember that you helped me once out of a real  , so i figured, perhaps you could do it again: I'm really sorry to be back here again, I know I shouldnt be but I followed all the security tipps you gave me, and I didnt open any suspicious e-mails.

I use Norton, AVG, spybot s&d and Microsoft Anti-spyware to protect my system.

So here's the Log, perhaps you see something suspicious:

This can be selected and fixed:
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone (HKLM)

There has been an issue found recently with Sun Java.

When newer versions are installed, the older versions are left behind and malware can call these older versions to exploit flaws. Some malware has been found to install this way.

First update to the very latest version of Sun Java, which is 1.5.0_06

Then go into Add Remove programs and uninstall any older versions you find listed there.

You are running tow AV scanners at the same time. Norton and AVG. They can interfere with each other and cause a performance hit. You need to disable one of them.

Are you running a Firewall?

Go for free online Virus scans here:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

Allow them to clean

Panda will have the option to create a log afer the scan has finished. Click the See Report button. Then click the save Report button. It will be saved under the name activescan.txt Do that and post that log into your next reply here.

That's fine.

Download and run Cleanup.

Learn how to use Cleanup:
http://home.comcast.net/~sgould4567/softwa...up/running.html

What is going on with your system now? I doublt the buzzing went away. HAve you recently moved your system or adding any new piece of electrics to that room? Any kind of changes you have made to either your system or the environment might explain it. It might be your Speakers too.

May I see another Hijckthis log too?
Seebald
Cleanup flushed about 1.4 gB worth of files. That was a real good tipp, thx.

I doubt it's the speakers, since I use the same headphones for 2 months now. Also, when i watch a video, the sound AND the picture stall together (sound interrupts, picture freezes for a short period).

I bought a MP3 Player recently (Creative Zen Micro) and installed the software that came with it (Media Organizer and Player-Driver) I guess it installed also new drivers for my soundcard (Avance AC97 Audio). I converted my CD-collection to MP3s with Media Organizer, the day I noticed the problem. So it might be that. I uninstalled all Programs that came with the MP3 Player and re-installed the sound driver, but the problem's still there... so I came to you...

Anyhow, here's the Hijack Log:

Mosaic1
You're welcome;

This file can be deleted.

C:\GatorPatch.log

The rest are cookies in Mozilla Firefox. Empty those out.

-------------------------------

Which program are you using to play the Videos?

Have you run DXDiag yet?

Go to Start >Run and type dxdiag
Press enter

When the DirectX diagnostic screen comes up, run the sound and Display tests.

Let me know how that goes. Don't forget to check what drivers show as being installed.
Seebald
I deleted the cookies.txt file. Hope I was supposed to do that, I didn't know how else to manage my cookies.

I made the tests with dxdiag before I contacted you, and now i've repeated them: everything runs ok.

The program i use for videos: for example windows media player. But ingame Videos of games do the same thing.

I also thought about this: the day the sound problems startet I discovered an old quicktime version on my harddrive, and because I couldnt uninstall it i kicked it in the trash and cleared "quicktime" related entries out of the registry (using regedit). I thought it might have to do something with that so i downloaded and installed the newest quicktime version, but since it brought no improvement i uninstalled it (this time properly) again.

My sound driver used to be named Advance AC97 and is now Realtek AC97. Does that perhaps mean something?

Mosaic1
Do you know how to get into Device Manager?

If so, scroll to Sounds Video and Game Controllers and expand that branch.

Then find your sound device and get its properties. See if there's any problem with it.

Also see if there are any problems for any of the other devices under Sounds Video and game controllers.
Seebald
I checked all properties of all devices. There are no Conflicts between any devices, also they all claim to work properly. The location of my Audiocodecs is unknown, is that normal? Also I've two MIDI devices: MPU-compatible MIDI- device and Realtek. Is that maybe a problem?

:coffee:
Mosaic1
AudioCodecs

Location: Unknown is not a problem. But di run the troubleshooter to see if it can pinpoint the problem of why the sound is stopping or skipping.

When you ran DxDiag did you turn down the Hardware Acceleration? That's a good test to see if you need a driver upgrade. If turning down the Hardware acceleratoin corrects the situation.
Seebald
Nope, even with Hardware Acceleration to zero, its still the same...

I opened Teamspeak just now and got this error message:

:rulez: TDSoundOut.Open(DirectSoundCreate):No sound driver is available for use.

Is this because I reinstalled DirectX?
Mosaic1
Google can get you answers.

http://forum.teamspeak.org/showthread.php?t=7054

QUOTE
upgraded my Soundcard drivers, and then 2 days later fired up TeamSpeak to join my server:

TDSoundOut.Open(DirectSoundCreate): No sound driver is available for use.

WTF? In the client, I looked at > Settings > Options: Sure enough, card was there?

Then, I sussed. It wasn't selected (EVEN though highlighted).

So go:

Settings > Options: slect you card in the list box, and hit 'Apply'.

I would suggest you uninstall then reinstall your sound drivers again.
Mosaic1
When you opened device manager and looked at yuour sound card drivers, was there a rollback option? That would roll back the drivers to the last ones installed previously.
Seebald
The TS error message wasn't really a problem (after I restarted it didn't show again), I just wanted to show you the extent of the rebellion of my soundcard. Like yesterday, suddenly all sound totally stopped, however I was still audible to my team members when I spoke into the microphone. I figured if I describe everything that goes wrong, you might pinpoint the problem easier.

I went to www.drivershq.com today and ran a check on my drivers. Apparently the following of my drivers are bad:

SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
SiS PCI-IDE-Controller
Realtek AC'97 Audio
NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4400
Creatix V.9X DSP Data Fax Modem

Can you tell me where I can get decent drivers? With google I seem to get only the bad ones... crying.gif
Seebald
I installed all the drivers they deemed decent, but now it's worse than ever crying.gif

Now I really don't know what to do anymore.... (I can't rollback my drivers, I uninstalled the last one so I'm getting an error message)

You posted and asked me a question. Then you went off on your own and took action before I had a chance to answer.

I am a Spyware Expert. Your problems are Operating System. I used to do that too, but on Windows 98. This kind of thing can be very frustrating.

Right now you have created a mess and I am not sure we'll be able to help you in the Spyware Forum or even if we should try.

BUT do you have a system restore point recent enough so as not to be ancient but also old enough that its date is from before you started playoin with your drivers?

Have a look. Let me know.
Mosaic1
Sorry if that sounded harsh. You paid $30.00 for that information? I had a look at the program just now.

If a system restore point is not available, what kind of installers do you have? Do you have the original driver isntalls for your devices?
Seebald
I am aware that this is a Anti-Malware forum, and that you're not my systems analyst, and I'm sorry if you feel the time you spent helping me was wasted. You only kept asking after my system was (hopefully) bug-free, so I thought you were interested in helping me with this off-topic problem. I appreciated it very much, since I don't know somebody else who knows as much about computers as you do. So please, no hard feelings and just tell me if you have no more time for me.

Since the drivershq - sounddriver was no good i rolled back to the previous and the sound's not worse than ever anymore. I don't know how to make a System restore point and I therefore fear that I haven't got any.
Mosaic1
It is not a matter of wasted time, It is a matter of getting you the best advice available. When it was one driver, I felt I might be able to help. This all tracks back to when you made that first change. You installed a utility which did more than you bargained for. And then it was one thing after another when you tried to fix the problem. Device Drivers can be a royal pain. And getting the correct one from the Manufacturer's site is the best thing. Then there is the install. that can be tricky.

System restore points:

Go to Start >Run and type msconfig
Press enter.

When the screen comes up. Click Launch System Restore.

Then click the Next button.

Look at the calendar in the left pane, The dates in Bold are dates where there is a system restore point available.

When did you insall that other player? DO you have a restore point available from right before you did that?

Post back to let me know please.
Seebald
Yes I paid 30 bucks for the new drivers. Stupidly I hoped they would solve the problem. So if anyone asks, tell them not to register at drivershq.com.

The original drivers sucked: I replaced most of them with (decent!) drivers I found with google. I'll try and search them with windows search, maybe they're still here. But maybe its not the drivers at all and theres just a burned chip inside my soundcard :boh:

I'll let you know if I find something out.
Seebald
The earliest bold day is January 6th, the day the problem occurred first.

If I choose this day, will it restore also the changes I made that day or just afterwards?
Mosaic1
What this does is it returns your Syste, to the way it was on that Date and time. any installs or uninstall you performed after that date and time will not be ineffect. Your personal Files, however, will still be there. There will not be any losses there.

Also, this is something which can be undone if you don't like it and it doesn't help.
Seebald
The first action on January 6th is "installed creative audio cd ripper". I chose this as restoration point. Windows shuts down, it takes a while then windows starts again and the system restoring program's telling me it was unable to restore my system to this point.

Do I have to restore it stepwise? What are possible reasons for the system restorer not to work (I defragmentated c: for example, could this be the reason?)
Mosaic1
It could be that files are missing. What is the date for the restore point right befire Jan6?

I have a feeling that one is going to give you the sme result though.

Either a Restore works or it doesn't. It's out of your hands.
Seebald
I have no restore points before Jan6. I was in holliday until Jan3 and between Jan3 and Jan6 i made apparently no changes to my System. And for some reason i cant select the last year in the restore point date selection. I tried several more points on Jan6, but no one got a result so far...
Mosaic1
Ok.
Then the best thing I can recommend is that you make a restore point now and then uninstall the sound driver and resintall. Go to the Manufacturer's site to get the driver.
Seebald
Sadly, the manufacturer's site doesn't provide the drivers, it recommendet for me to go on drivershq, where I got the worse ones. ahah.gif
Mosaic1
What did you have installed before all this mess started? Do you know and do have have that installer available to you?
Seebald
Someone at Creative said, it might not be the sound driver after all but my RAM. Needle skipping disc sound is apparently typical for overloaded RAM. I got 512 MB. How do I check how much is currently used?
Seebald
Bye the way, I made that System checkpoint you asked for. I can now mess around with my drivers.
Mosaic1
That's why the page file was invented.

Please go and get BelArc Advisor.

Run it and post the results. Leave out the personal information.

I am not being helpful and am going to call it a day on this issue soon if we get nowhere. I'll give you a place to post for help though.
Seebald
I ran it, if I did everything right you should see the results:

(okay I didnt do it right)

I'm posting them in. I don't know wich ones are private I don't care if anyone sees that I'm Seebi.

You never answered my last question about what you had on there before and if you still had the installer for it. What make and model is your computer?
Seebald
The original sounddrivers were no good. After them i downloaded the good ones and that was before i got Firefox. So their installers probably went to temp and are long deleted, since I clear temp every now and then.

Now downloaded drivers go directly to the desktop, if they're worth something I put them on C:, else I flush them right away, that was why I couldnt roll back the drivers to the previous OMG.gif
Seebald
Make and model of my PC:

Something you don't already know from the big post above?

Pentium 4 2.5 GHz
Medion HomePC
512 MB RAM
Nvidia GeForce4 Ti 4400
Mainboard integrated Soundcard...

need further info?
Mosaic1
And youhave no idea where you got the good drivers?

I need more information. Open DXDIAG again and get the version of the drivers you currently have installed please.
Mosaic1
What's the model number please? I need to get the exact specs.

You have integrated sound on your MOBO.

I think your MOBO is:

MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD MS-6701

But I am having trouble getting details because of a language barrier.
Seebald
I'm not sure wich one you want so i'm posting the whole dxdiag file, and you can pick it out, ok?

Language barrier?

How can I find out the model number?
Mosaic1
Did you see this?

You have integrated sound on your MOBO.

I think your MOBO is:

MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD MS-6701

At this point you need to get the specs and correct driver or driver upgrade. Don't forget to consider the version of the Operating system.

I am trying to research but this is not my specialty. I am going to sign off shortly.
Seebald
Ok if I sign off not as shortly? Its 12:00p.m. in my timezone and I gotta go to med school tomorrow.

Ok, I still got this contribution for today:

Should I try and install new drivers for my motherboard?

This guy here: has the same mainboard, and I could intstall the drivers he installed. But since you were angry the last time i did something on my own I better recheck if i'm supposed to update my motherboard drivers.
Mosaic1
Have you tried the latest driver as listed on this Realtek page?

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97...8&Software=True

I believe they are a newer version than what you have. Please be careful and read the readme before you try it again.
Mosaic1
I am more frustrated than angry. This is not my area of expertise and even if it were, drivers can be maddening!

But I do not recommend you flash your bios. I think that's what they are referencing.

Look. You had a problem when your nice working Audio driver was replaced by some utility. It stands to reason that you need a good audio driver.

The Newer RealTek version was just updated in late Dec 2005. If you haven't tried it?

Remember that if you have a problem getting into Windows after a driver upgrade. boot to safe mode and revert the sound driver.
Seebald
I installed the driver and it's as if I didn't install it: not better, not worse. Still music is listenable but begins to buzz the moment the computer has work to do. I think we should drop the bad driver theory (I've tried 4 with this one, and one of them was bound to be a good one). I contacted the people with creative and asked what changes the programs that come with this mp3 player usually do, and if they could pinpoint one, that would decrease the system efficiency and drop the sound quality. Hopefully I get an answer by tomorrow, I'll let you know. That's all I'm gonna do today, I'm tired of my ungrateful computer and I'm going to bed. Goodnight see you tomorrow!
Mosaic1
Why not just lose the new MP3 player then? I thought you had already uninstalled it?
Seebald
ah, now I see what you meant by losing the player: its a portable MP3 player. It's connected with USB, but needs software to be loaded with MP3s.

The MP3 Player's not plugged to the computer anymore. But it came with software, and I think one of those programs is responsible for my problem.

Yeah I uninstalled them (the ones that I could uninstall with Install Shield).
Mosaic1
And what's left then? Any entries in Add Remove Programs ?
If you install and it gives you problems, you uninstall and there are problems left. Then what changes were made to your system which the uninstallers did not clean up.
That's the logic. And it is why I wanted to try to go back to before this happened. But that wasn't possible. The restore point didn't work.
Seebald
nope, i removed all that were listed in add/remove.

however there's still something left in the creative folder, so i suppose it didnt remove all. should I kick this stuff to the recycle bin?
