computer is very slow it takes 100% of the cpu to do small processes and i get redirected on any searches that i use.

First time ive done this hope it is right
Just to let you know it took spybot about 4 hours to scan and adware will not go all the way through it just stops and will not finish.

You are running hijackthis from the Temp folder.. That will cause you to lose any backups it will make. So before we go any farther let's get it into its own folder in your program Files.


To do that, click this link and choose open from the dialog.

When the zip opens, you'll see a file named Move hijackthis.vbs in the folder.

Double click on Move hijackthis.vbs to run it. If you get a warning about a malicious script please ignore that and allow this to run. I wrote it and it is not harmful.

When the script has finished running, it will start Hijackthis from its new location:

Close Hijackthis.

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make. It can be enabled when your clean.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

You will be restarting into Safe mode later. Here's help if you need it.

To use the F8 key to start Windows XP in Safe mode
Restart the computer.
Some computers have a progress bar that refers to the word BIOS. Others may not let you know what is happening.
As soon as the BIOS loads, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. If this happens, restart the computer and try again.
Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, select Safe mode and then press Enter.

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:

When you run ewido for the first time, you might get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK.

From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.

Close Hijackthis, and click OK to proceed.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Either way, now restart into Safe mode and run EWIDO.

Next, run a scan with Ewido.

Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so please be patient

If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "remove" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.

When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Copy and paste the results from that scan back here when you return to post again.

*Note: Ewido is a free trial product for 14 days. After that you can purchase it for full features OR you can also keep the free version to use as an on-demand scanner (recommended).
You will still be able to manually update Ewido using the *update* button

Go into Control Panel>Network Connections.

Right click on your connection and click Properties. On the Properties page, Highlight Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)

Click Properties. This will bring up another page.

Select Obtain DNS Server Automatically

Click the ok button. The page will close. Press ok on the page in front of you.

Restart the computer.

Post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt and the report Ewido created.

Run hijackthis and post that new log too please.


You may have to reply more than once to fit all the logs into your response.

When i try to unzip the move_hijackthis i get a small box saying Hijackthis.exe not found.

And by the way I will have to admit that I was not patient I saw another fix that I though trelated to mine and I tried to do it. Go ahead and tell me I should have read the part that says dont try and fix by reading another persons responce, and way your at it go ahead and cuss me also i deserve it.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:

Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

I did everything on hear execpt for the Panda activescan I cannot get it downloaded. Also my adware is starting fine but then stops, task manager says not responding.

This is the new Hijack this logfile. If you will still help me I will not try to fix bymyself anymore.

Don't be so hard on yourself. I'll help you but am about to leave for the night. Let's get you started for now.


Open hijackthis.zip and right click on hijackthis.exe Select copy from the menu.
Create a new folder in My Documents, for example and then paste hijackthis.exe into it. Right click on an empty spot in that new folder and click paste on the menu.

Now you have a new folder with hijackthis.exe in it. Run hijackthis.exe from that new location.

Select the following items and press the fix checked button:

Go into Control Panel>Network Connections.

Right click on your connection and click Properties. On the Properties page, Highlight Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)

Click Properties. This will bring up another page.

Select Obtain DNS Server Automatically

Click the ok button. The page will close. Press ok on the page in front of you.

Restart the computer.


Once back in Windows, gtry the Panda Scan again. But be sure you go to Panda using Internet Explorer.


Run hijackthis again and post the new log.

I'd also like to see your other logs as per the directoins you read. The smitfraus and Ewido Logs.


You may have to reply more than once to fit all the logs into your response.


We may have to run another utility named Fixwareout if this doesn't work. That's for tomorrow after we see how this part goes.

That does look better. But I am not sure you ran Fixwareout too. I want you to do that.

Please download FixWareout from this link:

http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe

Save it on your desktop and double click on it to run.

click Finish. The fix will run.
Follow the prompts.
When asked to restart, do that


When your system reboots, follow the prompts. At the end, Hijackthis will start.

Close Hijackthis, and click OK to proceed.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Either way, now restart into Safe mode and run EWIDO.

Next, run a scan with Ewido.

Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so please be patient

If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "remove" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.

When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Copy and paste the results from that scan back here when you return to post again.

*Note: Ewido is a free trial product for 14 days. After that you can purchase it for full features OR you can also keep the free version to use as an on-demand scanner (recommended).
You will still be able to manually update Ewido using the *update* button


Restart the computer into regular Windows mode.

Empty your recycle bin.

Clear your Java cache. Find the Java icon in control panel and double click on it. Click the cache tab. Then press the Clear Cache button

This one is likely being put back each time you clean it.

It is being put back by your security programs. This is one very annoying feature. They see a change and reverse it.

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make. It can be enabled when your clean.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Fix this one using Hijackthis:

Then when you re-enable MS Anti Spyware, allow the change.


Restart.

Run hijackthis and post the new log please.

Its running twice as fast no and internet pages are coming up like they are supposed to thanks a bunch.
I am actualing taking network security this semester so this is a good start for me, mostly just followed your instructions but i was still able to see the difference.

You have the latest SunJava jre1.5.0_06.

There has been an issue found recently with Sun Java.

When newer versions are installed, the older versions are left behind and malware can call these older versions to exploit flaws. Some malware has been found to install this way.

You should go into Add Remove programs and uninstall any older versions you find listed there.

Once you have rebooted a time or two, be sure everything is in working order. It is time to flush your system restore points. Once you do that you will not be able to correct any problems you may have now by going back to a point before today.


After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.

Check the box labeled Turn off System restore.


Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Once you have done that, you need to get a firewall. I didn't see one running.

Either a router or the Windows Firewall will protect you from inbound traffic only. Anything trying to get out will not be prevented. This is not a good thing and it is strongly recommended that you install a software firewall as well to prevent unauthorized outbound traffic.
