Hi There,

I started removing spyware from my system because of random popups that kept occuring while surfing the net. I seem to have removed all of them but one, VX2, which adaware will recognise, but can not remove. Any help would be great.

Save the file to your desktop. Double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts. Open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into your next reply here.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

hey there

i am running norton internet secruity with a personal firewall on the medium setting (the recommended setting).

Also, I rebooted after using the cleanup tool but windows was really slow to finish loading everything, is this normal?

I think the slow startup is to be expected.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new Hijack This log.


ALSO. After you have finished running the L2Mfix part 2:

Go to Start >run and paste in this command:
regsvr32 ZIPFLDR.DLL


Press enter. Wait for the success message.

Hi there

scan is done and the logs follow. FYI: Before the 1st pass scan it came up with a couple of error messages that said it couldn't find a file. I didn't right it down but everything after that went fine.

That looks good. Did you remember the do the regsvr32 ZIPFLDR.DLL


Also, has your startup speee now r4eturned to normal? It should have.

Let me know before you do any of the rest of these steps please. Do not flush your restore points until we know your system is in working order.



After you finished running the L2MFix? It is important because the fix removed your Zip from the right click sendto menu.

That command would have set things right.


Your log looks good.


Once you have rebooted a time or two, be sure everything is in working order. It is time to flush your system restore points. Once you do that you will not be able to correct any problems you may have now by going back to a point before today.


After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.

Check the box labeled Turn off System restore.


Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Everything is fine and in working order - better than ever, and I did register the dll. Windows takes time to finish loading but I think it was like that anyway due to the number of programes it loads on startup. So I use selective startup to turn some off. I did have that winfixer 2005 spyware virus which xoftspy removed. However, uwfx5netinstaller.exe is still on the startup list in msconfig (not selected though). I also uninstalled kazaa due to the ad bundle that comes with it, and that is also in the list. Is there anything I can do for that?

You can remove those items from msconfig.

DO not Restart while they are selected.

Go into Msconfig and select any you want to remove.

Run hijackthis right away and select those items. Press the fix checked button.


Let's see if there are any more orphaned files to remove.

Allow them to clean

Le'ts do a little maintenance and see if that helps at all.

Do a chkdsk first.

To run Chkdsk go to start >Run and type

cmd.exe
Press enter

Copy this command to your clipboard:
chkdsk /r /f

When the prompt appears Right click in the window and click paste on the menu.

Press enter.
You'll be told that the drive is locked and asked if you want to run the check at next boot. Choose yes.

Restart and allow it to run.

When you get back, go to Start >Run and type
Eventvwr.msc

Press enter


Double click on Application in the left pane.
Look in the right pane for an item whose source says winlogon.

Double click on that to get the report chkdsk created.

What does it say?

If you want to copy it, look at the icon which looks like two pages and click on it.

That copies it to your clipboard. Paste that in here.



After you run chkdsk, defrag your hard drive.
