Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
SkyWife
After windows starts two or three windows pop up saying can't find [][][][][] etc. My guess is it has something to do with a virus that was removed after I scanned.

Help!

this is what I got from Hijackthis

Let's scan two files. One is a keylogger, I think. The other is a nasty but may be a new variant.

I would like you to go and have the files scanned here:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Enter this path into the File to upload box and then press the submit button. It will scan.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\smcss.dll
Copy and paste the scan results into your next reply here.

Do the same for this file:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sysfrcx.dll

-----------------

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop. Here's a link:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/VundoFix.exe

Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.

We may use it later if a manual removal won't work.

----------

Please download silentrunners.zip
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip

Unzip to your desktop and double click on the VBS file.
If your get a message about a malicious script, please allow the script to run. It is a diagnostic tool.

The script will save a Notepad document to your Desktop.

Copy and paste the contents of that text file into your next reply.

So I need the Scan results of those files and a Silent Runners log please.

Disclaimer
This service is by no means 100% safe. If this scanner says 'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even this service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, We cannot and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results presented by this non-profit online service.

Also, we are aware of the implications of a setup like this. We are sure this whole thing is by no means scientifically correct, since this is a fully automated service (although manual correction is possible). We are aware, in spite of efforts to proactively counter these, false positives might occur, for example. We do not consider this a very big issue, so please do not e-mail us about it. This is a simple online scan service, not the university of Wichita.

Scanning can take a while, since several scanners are being used, plus the fact some scanners use very high levels of (time consuming) heuristics. Scanners used are Linux versions, differences with Windows scanners may or may not occur. Another note: some scanners will only report one virus when scanning archives with multiple pieces of malware.

Virus definitions are updated every hour. There is a 15Mb limit per file. Please refrain from uploading tons of hex-edited or repacked variants of the same sample.

Please do not ask for viruses uploaded here, unless you work for an anti-virus vendor. They are not for trade. This is a legitimate service, not a VX site. Viruses uploaded here will be distributed to antivirus vendors without exception.

Let's try a simple removal first and if no luck, then we'll take it one step further.

CLose all open programs and run hijackthis. Select the following items and press the fix checked button:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
F3 - REG:win.ini: load=???

Restart the computer. Run hiajckthis and post the new log. We'll see if the hijackthis entries came back and if they did, we'll use another utility.

Either way, we'll remove the files later too.

Once you are clean, you'll want to change all personal information Passwords etc. If you do any online banking. These are keyloggers and they can record all the information you type in. So nothing is really private any longer. Protect yourself to be sure. They can get infromaiotn, but how they use it varies.

Also I have XP professional and it came with a firewall. Should I install another firewall?

Appreciate all your help the computer is doing tons better.

You're welcome. It looks really good too. But you did ahve a keylogger. You need to protect yourself and change all sensitive infomraiotn. All passwords etc. Online banking or paypal...

Let's try to find and delete those files again:
Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default.
Reset your search settings first.

Open Folder Options>view and check your settings:
Select
Show hidden files and folders
Display the contents of system folders

===============

These two can be fixed:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

The windows Firewall is not enough. It will protect you from inbound traffic only. Anything trying to get out will not be prevented. This is not a good thing and it is strongly recommended that you install a software firewall as well to prevent unauthorized outbound traffic.

After you install another firewall, then disable the windows Firewall.
SkyWife
The checks for those files didn't turn up anything.

How do I fix these two files?

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Also are these other warnings a problem

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellExecuteHooks\
INFECTION WARNING! "{5AE067D3-9AFB-48E0-853A-EBB7F4A000D7}" = "SABShellExecuteHook Class" [from CLSID]

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\
INFECTION WARNING! SABWinLogon\DLLName = "C:\Program Files\SuperAdBlocker.com\Super Ad Blocker\SABWINLO.DLL" ["SuperAdBlocker.com"]

INFECTION WARNING! "Reboot.exe" [null data]
Mosaic1
Run Hijackthis. Select these items and press the fix checked button.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Those warningsmean that these items are not on the safe list the script writer prepared at the time the script was written.

Those entries are ok.
SkyWife
Ran Super Ad blocker and it found scmss.exe, I had it delete it. Then downloaded and ran Norton antivirus/firewall. After scaning with Trend Micro and Norton it found nothing. Did a search with hidden files unhidden and it found nothing.

Ran Super Ad blocker and it found scmss.exe, I had it delete it.

Do you know where it was found? It may have been in System Volume information. That's your restore points. We'll need to flush those once we finish the rest.

Because you had a keylogger, your private informaoitn may nbo longer be private. You should now change all passwords and any other sensitive information you have on your system. Any online Banking or payments you have made etc as well.

--------------

Once you have rebooted a time or two, be sure everything is in working order. It is time to flush your system restore points. Once you do that you will not be able to correct any problems you may have now by going back to a point before today.

After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.

Check the box labeled Turn off System restore.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.
----------------------------
Also here is an excellent source for tips to tighten security. Follow the advice and get the free downloads to help avoid some of these problems in the future.

scmss was found in system restore. I deleted it and turn off system restore and rebooted.
Mosaic1
Good. thenis was not a problem. Did you remember to turn System Restore back on? IF not, go ahead and do that.

If everything is running well, we can close this one.
SkyWife
Yes, I turned system restore back on and changed passwords. I ran hijackthis again.
