Hi. I'm pretty novice in this stuff, but here goes... McAfee has picked up an infected file, winik.sys with a winkrootkit trojan, it won't clean, delete, or move the file...
I've downloaded and run both adaware and spybot, now here's the hijackthis log file...

Hi glaufman,

Save Silent Runners.vbs to your desktop and double click on it to run. This will make a file called something like "Startup Programs (UserName) DateTime.txt". Double click on it, so it'll open in Notepad. Post the text here.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as Options.txt on your Desktop.



Download Registry Search and extract it. Doubleclick the icon to run and click on "Import...". Select the file you created above. Click "OK" and Registry Search will search the Registry and report what it finds. Post that here.

Go to Start >Run and type cmd
Press enter to start a command window

Copy this command and then right click in the command window. Choose Paste from the menu.

Dir /s /a C:\PROGRA~1\vortrpvo > winik.txt & Start notepad winik.txt

This will take a look at the folder and open a file named winik.txt

Hi Bobbi, thanks for the help. I don't understand most of the results, but I guess I don't have to just yet (I'll learn...)... I'm surprised you're looking at vortrpvo... isn't that another virus? on the rest, I guess you're looking to see at what point something loads that could be protecting the file from getting cleaned?

It's associated with the winik driver. I'm not sure about the complete relation, but I've never seen a winik without a progra~1 folder like that.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as fixme.reg and save it on your Desktop.

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it.

Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Download Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Click on "Delete on Reboot", in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, enter C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\winik.sys and click on the button with the white cross in a red circle. You will get a question "File will be Deleted on Next Reboot" answer Yes, followed by "File will be Removed on Reboot, Do you want to reboot now?", answer "No". Do the same for these files:

AS a side note, when I re-ran the hijack this, my virus scanner (McAfee) came up with the same winik.sys file corrupted with winkrootkit...

It is not a good idea to have multiple anti virus products running. These programs get in each other's way. Use just one as an "On Access" scanner. You can keep the other one for "On Demand" scanning.

While doing these fixes turn off all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs, because I think that they are working against us!

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as fixme.reg and save it on your Desktop.

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it.
You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".
Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

The above Registry file was written specifically for this infection on this person's computer. It is NOT to be used on another computer, as it may cause damage that could result in a format!

Restart your computer.

Download Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Click on "Delete on Reboot", in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, enter C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\winik.sys and click on the button with the white cross in a red circle. You will get a question "File will be Deleted on Next Reboot" answer Yes, followed by "File will be Removed on Reboot, Do you want to reboot now?", answer "No". Do the same for these files:

At the end if the fix you can return the files to hidden status if you want.

Delete the following folders in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\Program Files\vortrpvo
C:\Program Files\uqwwsr

Restart your computer and post a new log, all of them, in this thread.

OK. Looks like I messed up last night, and sent the old directory. The directory I actually ran last night came out:

Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 1C48-E141

Which is to say, it came up blank.
Unfortunately, I didn't realize this until I had done your registry entries... is this a problem?
Also, I tried to put your items into killbox, but it wouldn't let me enter spaces... is this normal? I stopped at that point, not wanting to mess up any further... I also deleted the log file killbox left so it wouldn't do anything on the next reboot...
As for the antivirus, Norton has been disabled for a long time, but I can't find a way to get it to not load at startup without uninstalling it completely... maybe you can help with that... and as far as I know I don't have any real time anti-spyware...

In the meantime, remember that last night I stopped without completing the instructions... could it be that something in this uqwwsr re-installed it after we removed it the first time? (i see vortrpvo is no longer there...)... if the automatic doesn't work tonight, should I try your instructions with vortrpvo changed to uqwwsr?

If I read the logs correctly, there are still references to winik in the registry, and I saw a ref to uqwwsr somewhere... so I'm confused... McAfee doesn't come up with a virus, but is the infrastructure still there to make re-infection a high risk? How can I get rid of this compeletely?

The problem with WinIK is that it hides itself. That is what makes it so difficult to get rid of. But we won't give up!

We're working on it. It seems we're making progress! From your logs I can see that the WinIk driver (the file that gets loaded) is gone. So that leaves us some Registry entries and one folder to get rid of.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as fixme.reg and save it on your Desktop.

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it.
You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".
Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

The above Registry file was written specifically for this infection on this person's computer. It is NOT to be used on another computer, as it may cause damage that could result in a format!

Download Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Click on "Delete on Reboot". Copy the following list (just select the text and click on Edit, Copy.

Then in Killbox click on "File", "Paste from Clipboard" and click on the button with the white cross in a red circle. You will get a question "File will be Deleted on Next Reboot" answer Yes, followed by "File will be Removed on Reboot, Do you want to reboot now?", answer "Yes". Let Killbox do it's work.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

Show hidden files. How do I show hidden files?

download SysInternals PSExec. And extract it to c:\Windows\System32.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as c:\fixme.reg.

The above Registry file was written specifically for this infection on this person's computer. It is NOT to be used on another computer, as it may cause damage that could result in a format!

Choose "Run..." from the startmenu and type psexec –s -i –d regedit.exe c:\fixme.reg. Press enter. The file you just saved will be imported now. Answer yes to questions.

Afterward restart your computer and post the three familiar logs.

I think so! This log looks clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Sygate Personal Firewall or Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

That's correct. You can run SpywareBlaster and IE-SpyAds since they manipulate the Registry, preventing infection. And you can use AdAware and Spybot to check up. As long as programs aren't running at the same time it is better for anti-spyware to be in multiples.

I can't help you there. That's a matter of running them and seeing if the suffice. You should be able to tell a software firewall to let the VPN pass, so I think there's not much in the way of problems.

You can use that as main firewall, and use the software one as a monitor on your computer.
