Hi,

My IE browser has been hijacked with MYWEBSEARCH2 and I also have a Win32 virus in addition to other probs.

I have used ADAWARE SE, Spybot, housecall etc and before I run a HJT log I need to enable my hidden folders....but I can't.

When I go to control panel I do not have a "folder options" icon.

Windows XP

Can anyone help me please uhm.gif
LoPhatPhuud
You do not need Hidden folders on to run HiJackThis. You can also try this:
Double Click on MyComputer
From the Menus,
Select Tools -> Folder Options -> View

Please run HiJackThis and post the log in this thread.

Also do this:
Please copy the text in the box below to Notepad and save it to your desktop as reginfo.bat.
CODE
regedit /e reginfo.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer"
start notepad.exe reginfo.txt
exit

Double-click on the reginfo.bat file, and it will run and create a text document on your desktop which will open in Notepad.

Copy and paste the contents of that entire file in this thread.

Hello and many thanks for your help, it is appreciated.

Here is the reginfo script you requested.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=dword:00000091
"SpecifyDefaultButtons"=dword:00000000
"Btn_Search"=dword:00000000
"NoBandCustomize"=dword:00000000
"NoToolbarCustomize"=dword:00000000
"NoWindowsUpdate"=dword:00000001

I'll do the HJT log next

Thanks again

I also tried the other method of getting to the folder options but that doesn't work either, the folder options icon isn't there.

Hope this means more to you than it does to me!

Thanks again

First:
You are currently using hijackthis from a temporary directory, or from the Desktop.
This can cause problems and will leave backups scattered.

Please create a directory on your c: drive called c:\hijackthis and download and unzip hijackthis into that directory.
Run the program from that directory from now on.

It is essential that you follow these steps or certain important features of the program will not function correctly.

Second:
If you did not install the following items, then I suggest you allow HJT to remove them in the next step. If you did install them, then do not remove them in the next step.

Third:
Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Check the following items in HijackThis.
(note: If any R* items do not appear in Safe Mode, re-run HiJackThis in Normal Mode and remove them after you finish removing these items.)

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

While still in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
(Files specified without a full path will be located in C:\Windows\ or C:\Windows\System32\) [b
C:\Program Files\Block Checker\ <--delete entire folder
C:\DOCUME~1\MARK~1.MCF\APPLIC~1\EXITDR~1\ <--delete entire folder

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

While I check the log and look deeper into the missing 'Folder Options', please so this:

Please copy the text in the box below to Notepad and save it to your desktop as reginfo.bat.
CODE
regedit /e reginfo.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System"
start notepad.exe reginfo.txt
exit

Double-click on the reginfo.bat file, and it will run and create a text document on your desktop which will open in Notepad.

Copy and paste the contents of that entire file in this thread.

While you are doing that last reg file, check to see if 'Windows Update' appears in the IE 'Tools' menu. I beleive you will find it is missing.
The_BranFlake
You are correct, it is missing
LoPhatPhuud
First:
This will put Windows Update back on the IE TOols menu.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste in the box below to a new text file.
Save it on your Desktop as fixme.reg

CODE
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoWindowsUpdate"=dword:00000000

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it.

You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".
Answer 'Yes' and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Second:
I still need this one. I believe this may show where the Folder Options Control Panel is turned off.

Please copy the text in the box below to Notepad and save it to your desktop as reginfo.bat.
CODE
regedit /e reginfo.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\Flags"
start notepad.exe reginfo.txt

Double-click on the reginfo.bat file, and it will run and create a text document on your desktop which will open in Notepad.

LoPhatPhuud
Nope, flags does not control Folder Options.

Another one to try.

Please copy the text in the box below to Notepad and save it to your desktop as reginfo.bat.
CODE
regedit /e reginfo.txt "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6DFD7C5C-2451-11d3-A299-00C04F8EF6AF} "
start notepad.exe reginfo.txt
exit

Double-click on the reginfo.bat file, and it will run and create a text document on your desktop which will open in Notepad.

Copy and paste the contents of that entire file in this thread.
The_BranFlake
I did that but it says it cannot find the file
LoPhatPhuud
OK, the CLSID for Folder Options may vary per computer.

I found mine by search, so lets try that for yours. In the meantime I will ask in an MVP mailing list re this issue. I beleive whatever infected your machine removed access to Folder Options and Windows Update in an attempt to prevent its removal.

Please download the Registry Search tool by clicking on the "hard drive" icon halfway down this page:
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/
Save it to the desktop and run it. If you get an alert from your antivirus about scripting, choose to allow the script to run. Search for Folder Options and click OK. Post the logfile from the tool here for me.

NOTE: There is a space between Folder and Options

Well, that was a bust too. What I had hoped for was not true.

No we wait until I get a response to my post on the mailing list.

Folder Options has been disabled and I need to find ou t how to turn it back on.

When I get a response, I'll post back.

There are a few other registry items that got modified as well. Sophos has a rmeoval tool which will correct all the settings.

Go here: http://www.sophos.com/support/disinfection/sumom.html
download the SUMOMGUI tools and run it.

POst back here with a new HJT log and let me know how everything went.

I await your advice.

Well, at least that one is gone. It had disabled system restore, blocked restore configuration, and a few other things. It was intent on keeping you from finding it!

Let's get auto startups, then we can clean whats left.

Download 'Autoruns' from here:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html

Unzip to a folder and the double click on autoruns.exe

Wait until the program has finished running (the status line will show 'Ready')
Under the 'Options' menu, make sure that 'Include Empty Sections' is checked.
Wait again until ready.

Be sure the 'Everything' tab is selected.
Select 'File -> Save' and save the output file.

Copy the contents of the Autoruns text file and post its contents in this thread.

Silly me, I forgot an entry in the last post. Maybe I need to crawl back in bed.

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Check the following items in HijackThis.
(note: If any R* items do not appear in Safe Mode, re-run HiJackThis in Normal Mode and remove them after you finish removing these items.)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.uceaqxlurk.uk/yS6/_cIMeUQPjTViK...mT4n/5q7vp9.htm

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Listsign] C:\DOCUME~1\MARK~1.MCF\APPLIC~1\EXITDR~1\Vgafast.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

While still in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
(Files specified without a full path will be located in C:\Windows\ or C:\Windows\System32\)
C:\DOCUME~1\MARK~1.MCF\APPLIC~1\EXITDR~1\ <--delete entire folder

*How to Boot into Safe mode: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...001052409420406
**Show Hidden and System files and folders: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Not terribly successful i'm afraid.

I opened all the hidden folders, system folders etc and then run HJT, but the

Even the search couldn't find it.

Here's the HJT log whilst in safe mode

When I rebooted in normal mode and ran HJT the 2 files I was asked to delete were there so I fixed them, but I've done this before and they just come back!

I still cannot find the
C:\DOCUME~1\MARK~1.MCF\APPLIC~1\EXITDR~1\ <--delete entire folder

file.

Here is the latest HJT log in normal mode

I suspect that the PCTools BHO's you have installed maybe restoring the bad entries when you change them. Is there a way to allow the change? Also, it may be Spyware Doctor doing it. One of the problems we often enounter is protection that restores bad entries.

There is also a remote possibility that sometinhg is hiding, but I doubt it. TO be sure please do the following and I will see if I can find out more info on PCTools.

Please download SilentRunners from here:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip
Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it.
If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop.
Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

Great. There is a scheduled task that most likey does the restoration. I need to see why Autoruns did not include them too.

Onward...

First, we need to delete the scheduled task:

From the Desktop...

Start -> Control Panel -> Scheduled Tasks
Delete this task: "ACFF500E9184CC56"

Then run HiJackThis..

and remove these two entires:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.uceaqxlurk.uk/yS6/_cIMeUQPjTViK...mT4n/5q7vp9.htm
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Listsign] C:\DOCUME~1\MARK~1.MCF\APPLIC~1\EXITDR~1\Vgafast.exe

Reboot, run HiJackThis and post the new log in this thread.
The_BranFlake
The "ACFF500E9184CC56" scheduled task does not show in the scheduled tasks file, only the PC BUGDOCTOR task shows and I have deleted that just in case but it doesn't make a difference.

uhm.gif
LoPhatPhuud
Very Strange. Silent Runners said the Task was there, yuo say it is not.

Check under Folder Options to make sure that Hidden Files are visible, and also that hidden System files are visible, then check the Scheduled tasks again.

BTW, are you logged in to an account with Administrator rights?

Then, take break and enjoy the evening. I will be back tomorrow on this log.
The_BranFlake
Made sure everythig was visible and still the scheduled task wasn't there, I even logged on in safe mode (as administrator) and still not there.

It's 2:30am here, I'm off to bed!
LoPhatPhuud
I am going to take a day or two and see if I can figure out why that entry is still there. I am inclined to think some of the software you are running is restoring hte removed entry.

There is nothing in all the last logs showing that would be doing it. I am going to go over them all again, then do some more checking.

I would like to know when it comes back.

Remove this entry using HiJackThis:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.uceaqxlurk.uk/yS6/_cIMeUQPjTViK...mT4n/5q7vp9.htm

Then scan again, and post the log in this thread.

If the entry was not on the log, use the computer for an hour so and check to see if the entry is there. If not, then reboot and check. Let me know the results.
The_BranFlake
Hi,

I deleted the item and re-ran HJT and the offending item was not there.

I then rebooted my PC and the item appeared again, here is the HJT log after the deletion...

Please note I will be working away now until Thursday night so if I don't reply you'll now why, please don't delete my thread!

Thanks and best wishes from the UK.

The_BranFlake
Hi,

I'm not sure if you were waiting for me to return from working away.

Have you had chance to look any further into this please?
LoPhatPhuud
I'm here and I had a note diaried to follow up by this evening.

So far nothing positive, mostly speculation. I still believe it is being restored, and not replaced. In Internet Explorer, Tools -> Manage Addons. Disabled both of the PCTools browser helper objects. (Site Guard and Browser monitor).

RUn HiJackThis and delete the R1 entry. Reboot and check if it came back.

If it did come back, do the following:

Please copy the text in the box below to Notepad and save it to your desktop as reginfo.bat.
CODE
regedit /e reginfo.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify"
start notepad.exe reginfo.txt
exit

Double-click on the reginfo.bat file, and it will run and create a text document on your desktop which will open in Notepad.

Copy and paste the contents of that entire file in this thread.
The_BranFlake
Good news (I hope)

It didn't come back!

Here's a current HJT log

I hope it works!

Now, if it is indeed those add-ons, how do you get them to accept the changes and not revert back? Check the documentation, or help, with Spyware Doctor and see if it offers any answers.

Wait a few days a then post back to let me know if it is still good.

Just a couple of further points..

Can you see any security weaknesses with my set-up and if so perhaps you could recommend some tools to keep me safe?

Does this site rely on donations, I would gladly contribute for all the marvellous assistance you have very kindly given me.

Thanks again,

Mark
LoPhatPhuud
Your log is still clean.

Gladiator does not accept donations at this time. Helping you learn about spyware/malware and protection is payment enough!

At last, your system is clean and free of spyware! Want to keep it that way?

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and Internet Explorer. This includes SP1 and SP2 if you use Windows XP. The first defense against infection is a properly patched Operating System.
a. Windows Update: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

If you have Word, Excel, Outlook or other Office programs installed. Consider using Microsoft Update instead of Windows Update. See the FAQ page here for more information: http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdat...t.aspx?ln=en-us

Also, download and install Microsoft Baseline Analyzer.(Note that MBSA is only for Win 2000 SP3 or later and Office XP or later) When run, it will check system for security exposures, including missing updates. I suggest running it weekly. You can obtain more information here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...s/mbsahome.mspx

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Select Internet Options from the Control Panels, or from Internet Explorer (Tools -> Internet Options)
Press 'default level', then OK
Now press "Custom Level."

In the ActiveX controls and plug-ins section set these options:
'Download signed ActiveX controls' - Prompt
'Download unsigned ActiveX controls' - Disable
'Initialize and script ActiveX controls not maked as safe'- Disable
All other options accept the default

For Windows XP2 SP2 users, check this link for additional steps you can take to secure Internet Explorer: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...xp/iesecxp.mspx
Also, for Sp2 SP2 and IE users, in IE, Tools -> Manage Add-ons will give you a list of all BHO's, Extensions, and ActiveX modules installed on your computer. You can update, enable or disable them.

3. Download and install the following free programs
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
b. IE/Spyad: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm
c. BHODemon: http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm

4. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
You may also want to consider installing one (or more) of the following:
a. Microsoft AntiSpyware: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/s...re/default.mspx
NOTE: MS AntiSpyware only runs on Windows 2000, XP, and 2003.
b. Spybot S&D: http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
c. AdAware Personal: http://www.lavasoft.de/
d. CounterSpy: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/ (not free but well worth the $19.95)

Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware. I recommend a combination of Microsoft Spyware and TeaTimer from Spybot S&D.

If you use, or plan on using, additional spyware/malware detection and/or removal programs, please check Items 8 and 9.

5. Install 'Spoofstick"
Spoofstick is a simple browser extension that helps users detect spoofed (fake) websites. This extension is free and installs in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
a. http://www.corestreet.com/spoofstick

6. Reset System Restore
If you are using Windows ME or Windows XP, please reset your System Restore. See Windows help for information.

7. Clean Temporary Files and Folders
Download and install the disk cleanup utility called Cleanup! from here:
http://cleanup.stevengould.org/
http://www.hijackthislogs.com/dl/CleanUp312.exe

Cleanup! will get rid of any malware which may be hiding in your temp folders (a common hiding place). You may also regain a massive amount of disk space.
Here is a tutorial which describes its usage:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial93.html

Run the disk cleanup utility called Cleanup! that you have already downloaded and installed
Check the custom settings to your liking under options, but be sure to delete temporary files and temporary internet files for all user profiles. Also, cleanout the prefetch folder and the recycle bin.
Then reboot into normal mode to let it clean out the remaining files.

8. Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware
Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List. It will save you a lot of grief, as well as money if you are thinking of purchasing. Here is the link: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

9. Anti-Spyware Programs Compared
Want to know just how effective your anti-spyware program is? Wonder how well any of the "rogue" programs listed above work? Check this link for an independent comparison of several anti-spyware programs: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm

10. Alternate Browser
Consider using an alternate browser as your default. I recommend and use Firefox as my primary browser. It is still necessary to keep Internet Explorer current and protected in order to use Windows Update.

For more information about Spyware, the tools available, and other informative material, including information on how you may have been infected in the first place, please check out this link: http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com/index...?showtopic=9857
