Hi there, i am not good with comps but have followed instructions and run adaware and spybot in safe mode and normal also microantispyware however keep getting redirected when wanting to perform some task. For example sometimes cannot access outlook or am redirected to different progs.Have been e-mailing a friend who has been having serious probs with comp. Possible source of infections? Thanks for your speedy response. Yes the log was mine. I had left the computer switched on and gone out on my return the problems had started. I still had a google bar but it was slightly dift. I could not open the icons i wanted to on the desktop: when i tried i would get which ever icon was above it. i could not access the sites i wanted on the internet the search page would stop halfway thru loading although the computer did not freeze completely it was considerably slower. I could not open mymicrosoft 2000 at all and therefore access my emails. Opening spybot and AVG was difficult as had to keep trying.


After 24 hours of non stop scanning I feel I hve gotten rid of it now, using adaware and spybot in safe mode and rebooting each time, microsoft antispyware plus AVG antivirus. Strangely enough not every scan produced results. Only x0ftSpy showed Mirar worm active and , i think it was an IBIS toolbar. Now removed. I remain worried something is in my comp. partic. since you say the hijack was cool even though I had the above probs. Any suggestions? really appreciate your help thanks,

One other ? how long do i keep backups or file restore as they possibly harbour what ever I had?

You can delete the backups once you are sure that everything is all right. I assume you are refering to the backups before deleting malware from your system.

Check your computer with the following free anti-virus/anti-trojan products.

And, here's the link to McAfee AVERT Stinger and instructions for use.

Be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.

Save Silent Runners.vbs to your desktop and double click on it to run. This will make a file called something like "Startup Programs (UserName) DateTime.txt". Double click on it, so it'll open in Notepad. Post the text here. Maybe this will show something.

Hi Bobbi, Apologies for taking so long to reply, but very busy.
After running the scans and removing the files comp is working well. As u supposed there were infected files in restore and docs and settings which i hope i have cleared, have posted the notepad just to be sure. May I thank u for your support its good to know your out there!!!

This log looks clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Sygate Personal Firewall or Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2
