Full Version: Hotbar blocked by MS Antispyware but comes back
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
keithdick
A friend had some problems with the computer being very slow and some warnings about Hotbar install attempts. MS Antispyware has been on the machine for many months and is up to date. Each time the Hotbar install attempt showed up, they told MS Antispyware to remove it, and it claims to have done so, but the Hotbar install attempt happens again after a reboot even when the machine has not been connected to the internet between the removal and the reboot. It appears that the MS Antispyware is blocking the install attempt but not removing some other software that intitates the install attempt. I'm looking for how to get rid of whatever is initiating the Hotbar install attempt.

Below is the HijackThis log from before we started cleaning things. We then ran full scans with AdAware, Spybot S&D, and MS Antispyware. Spybot said it found and removed Hotbar (and a few other things). AdAware removed some stuff, too. But the Hotbar install attempt still comes up after a reboot. I also ran the standalone Hotbar removal program from the Symantec site. It said it did not find Hotbar on the machine (this was after Spybot had removed it), but the Hotbar install attempt still comes up.

The machine is a family machine with four user accounts. The Hotbar install attempt only happens when you try to logon to a particular one of the four accounts. Once you block the Hotbar install attempt, you can logoff that user and back on and you don't get any prompts about Hotbar. But after a reboot, it is back.

Any ideas what I can delete to keep the Hotbar install attempt from happening?

As I said above, this HijackThis log is from before the AdAware, etc. scans removed things. I tried to get a new HijackThis scan but I guess I did something wrong and the file I brought back with me was junk. (The computer isn't mine so I can't get another scan quickly.)

(Files specified without a full path will be located in C:\Windows\ or C:\Windows\System32\)
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ <--delete entire folder
C:\Program Files\Uzjzt\Kaypjc.exe

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

Okay, I'll try that, but it might be a couple of days before the owners of the computer and I can get together.

One question, though -- I thought the Viewpoint stuff was a legitimate add-on for displaying 3D images, at least that is what I thought I found when doing some searches when I was trying to understand the things HijackThis was showing. Did I misunderstand or get wrong information about it?
LoPhatPhuud
Viewpoint is classed as an 'Option' removal.

From the web.....
Viewpoint Manager can be prevented from accessing the internet by simply selecting the disable auto-update within the Viewpoint Manger Control Panel.

You may find that some online services tag Viewpoint as spy ware. The excerpt below is from Viewpoint Corporation's Privacy Policy located at http://www.viewpoint.com/privacy.html

'To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.'

Okay, I tried the stuff you suggested and a couple of the things were there and got removed. But the Hotbar installation attempt still happens and still gets blocked by Microsoft Antispyware as before, just for the one user.

I have attached three HijackThis logs -- all taken after doing the things you suggested. The first was done in safe mode, the second was done in the user who experiences the Hotbar installation attempt, the third was done in another user on the machine.

There is nothing in either log.

Use a logon that has Administrator rights and do this:

Download 'Autoruns' from here:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html

Unzip to a folder and the double click on autoruns.exe

Wait until the program has finished running (the status line will show 'Ready')
Under the 'Options' menu, make sure that 'Include Empty Sections' is checked.
Wait again until ready.

Be sure the 'Everything' tab is selected.
Select 'File -> Save' and save the output file.

Copy the contents of the Autoruns text file and post its contents in this thread.

Also, post HJT logs from the other logons.
