Hello -

I have a problem with a machine that I have posted for before on here. It is a Win2000 Machine SP4 with a P4 1.8GHz Processor and 256MB RAM. Machine is running MSIE 6.0. I have all current versions of Adaware & HijackThis.

Trying to start a browser I am confronted with a program error which reads like so:
"iexplorer has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You need to restart the program." I cant get anywhere with this.

Here is a HijackThis log which I ran this morning (8/18/05)

a bit confused......
Thanks!

Hi Jim,

you really should go to one of the HijackThis schools, so you can learn to do this yourself ;)

I see Ewido is running. Can you update and run it. This log contains Qoologic. After that, please post a new log from HijackThis and the log from Ewido.

There are a few schools that will teach you how to use HijackThis and recognize infections and how to deal with them. SpywareInfo, Tom Coyote's and bleepingcomputer.com are examples. I don't pick threads to answer. At the moment I come in, I handle my open logs and then answer everybody that hasn't been responded to yet. So I think it's just a coincidence that I answer a lot of your calls.

You seem to have a few more infections... Let's see if we can handle them.

Please zip up this folder: C:\WINNT\dHZpbmNlbnQA and go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php and submit it. There are some questions about it... Just to be sure change all your passwords when you are clean.

Download LQfix.exe and place it on your desktop.
Doubleclick LQfix.exe and click install.
This will create a new folder called LQfix on your desktop.
Open the folder and doubleclick ClickThis.bat
Follow the prompts on the screen.
Your system will reboot afterwards.
Please be patient after reboot, because there is a script running in the background.

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Open "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. Select the following items:
  • SurfSideKick
and click "Remove" for each of them. If one of the uninstallers wants to download stuff or needs an Internet connection, skip that one and report them to me.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://websearch.shopnav.com/sidesearch.cg...d=11853235&id=0

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {02EE5B04-F144-47BB-83FB-A60BD91B74A9} - C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\SskBho.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ttupt] C:\WINNT\ttupt.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINNT\system32\dss4sk.exe reg_run
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ntdll.dll] C:\WINNT\system32\dss4sk.exe reg_run

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked".

Restart your computer in Safe Mode. How do I Safe Boot my computer?

Show hidden files. How do I show hidden files?
At the end if the fix you can return the files to hidden status if you want.

Delete the following files in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\WINNT\system32\exp.exe
C:\WINNT\ttupt.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\dss4sk.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\iolgsy.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\toorfd.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\prints.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\adpxrt.exe

Delete the following folders in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3
C:\WINNT\dHZpbmNlbnQA

Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Bobbi Flekman
Hi Jim,

Thanks for the submitting. Experts will be looking at the files.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Hi Jim,

Go to Online malware scan and submit C:\Program Files\snss\snss.exe.

You might want to save this page on your favorites, so you can find it again when you return. You can also click on your name and click on "Find All Posts" to find your thread.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINNT\system32\Searchx.htm

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINNT\system32\dss4sk.exe reg_run
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AUNPS2] RUNDLL32 AUNPS2.DLL,_Run@16

O23 - Service: Command Service (cmdService) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\dHZpbmNlbnQA\command.exe (file missing)

Folders and files with a tilde (~), means that there is a file/folder that starts with the six characters in front of the tilde, note that there may be spaces in the name. If there are more than one, please report them back and do not delete!

Delete the following files in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\WINNT\system32\Searchx.htm
C:\WINNT\system32\dss4sk.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\AUNPS2.DLL

Delete the following folders in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\WINNT\dHZpbmNlbnQA

Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

Hi Jim,

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINNT\system32\dss4sk.exe reg_run
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [minitp] C:\WINNT\system32\minitp.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [minitp] C:\WINNT\system32\minitp.exe

O20 - Winlogon Notify: Reinstall - C:\WINNT\system32\azicap32.dll

O23 - Service: Command Service (cmdService) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\dHZpbmNlbnQA\command.exe (file missing)

C:\WINNT\system32\dss4sk.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\minitp.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\azicap32.dll

Delete the following folders in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\WINNT\dHZpbmNlbnQA

Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

Let's see if they go... How's the computer running now?

Bobbie -

Here is the new log for HijackThis.....however, it seems like everytime we do something im noticing more things appearing. When i restarted and booted into normal mode after doing your items in Safe Mode, VirtualBouncer was trying to install itself on the machine. I went to Add/Remove programs and took it off of there but it seems like a couple other things have not placed themselves on the computer.
Are we positive that
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [snss Launcher] "C:\Program Files\snss\snss.exe" isn't a problem????

And now these have appeared:
C:\WINNT\system32\yrkbvvd\hxey.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\anpqh\xelbxxvo.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\ropoqcme\rjnjjwt.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\ptxljf\gvvrqx.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\vb2uninstaller4_19.EXE

Take a look.....
Oh and by the way....at least i can get browsers to pull up without crashing and having errors pull up....so that's progress. :sorry:

Hi Jim,

You're getting them faster then I can get riod of them. So we're going to take some counter measures first.

Download Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm and install it.

Close down all programs that do not need to get to the internet.

Go here and download the MVPS host file. Install it as is being said on that page.

Also install IE-Spyads. This one will dump a whole lot of sites in your Restricted Sites List so they won;t be able to download programs to your hard disc.

Check your computer with the following free anti-virus/anti-trojan products.

Housecall Anti Virus Panda Anti Virus Trojan Scan Bit Defender

And, here's the link to McAfee AVERT Stinger and instructions for use.

Be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.

Then update Ewido, and run it again. Post the log and a new log from HijackThis.
