Full Version: Computer being weird... (Hijack This Log Included)
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
Metal Massacre
For some reason my computer has been starting to act this past week, and last virus scan I did said I had a trojan which I removed. Ad-Aware and Spybot (most updated versions) give me the usual stuff wheN I scan nothing out of the ordinary. But this morning when I woke up my computer was frozen with no explanation, and just some general weirdness happening. So I figure just to be safe I'd post my hijack this log after scanning with my virus scanner/ad-aware/spybot. Anyways thanks in advanced for any help. worthy.gif

Edit: Had to rescan since I apparently I missed a few things.

Oh and also there have been a few random program freezes, almost forgot that.
Bobbi Flekman
Hi Metal Massacre,

Your log looks fairly clean... Check your computer with the following free anti-virus/anti-trojan products.

Housecall Anti Virus Panda Anti Virus Trojan Scan Bit Defender

And, here's the link to McAfee AVERT Stinger and instructions for use.

Be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.

Afterwards post the log from Panda and a new log from HijackThis.
Metal Massacre
Heh this is why I love this site. You guys are all so helpful. I'll use those programs you linked and post the results soon as they're done. Thanks a lot man!
Metal Massacre
During all that scanning and stuff my computer really took a crap on me and I had to restart, I'm not sure what happened. Suddenly it says it can't find my desktop because the filepath may be wrong, then litestep craps out on me, and a few programs shut down. After I restarted everything was hunky dory. Anyways panda didn't give me the option of copying a log or anything like that. But here is the new hijack this log:

Hi Metal Massacre,

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as Export.bat and save it on your Desktop.

CODE
regedit /e dllhost.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrrentControlSet\Services\dllhost"
regedit /e scvhost.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrrentControlSet\Services\scvhost"
regedit /e syslock.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrrentControlSet\Services\syslock"
copy dllhost.txt + scvhost.txt + syslock.txt = Output.txt
del /q dllhost.txt
del /q scvhost.txt
del /q syslock.txt
notepad Output.txt
del /q Output.txt

Locate Export.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. This will open Notepad with some text in it. Post that.
Metal Massacre
I did exactly as you said, but when I open up the Export.bat it opens up Notepad and says "Cannot Find Output.txt File Do You Want To Create A New File?" I click yes, then it just stays blank. I probably should've mentioned this, but I'm on windows 2000, I dunno if that changes anything, and I probably should've mentioned this earlier. Sorry.

Strange... Can you try this?

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as Export.bat and save it on your Desktop.
CODE
regedit /e c:\dllhost.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrrentControlSet\Services\dllhost"
regedit /e c:\scvhost.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrrentControlSet\Services\scvhost"
regedit /e c:\syslock.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrrentControlSet\Services\syslock"
copy c:\dllhost.txt + c:\scvhost.txt + c:\syslock.txt = c:\Output.txt
del /q c:\dllhost.txt
del /q c:\scvhost.txt
del /q c:\syslock.txt
notepad c:\Output.txt
del /q c:\Output.txt
Locate Export.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. This will open Notepad with some text in it. Post that.

I already saw that in your HijackThis log.

Hmm... strange...

Lety's try it in a different way.

Please download GetService.zip
Extract it to a new folder in the desktop. Double click on the Getservice.bat file to run it. This will create and open a text file named getservice.txt in the same folder. It will then open getservice.txt for you.
getservice.txt will list all active Services. Copy and paste the contents of getservice.txt in your next reply here.

Hi Metal Massacre,

grrrr..... It doesn't show what I want to know. Click "Start", "Run...", type "regedit.exe" and click on "OK". Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SYSTEM->CurrentControlSet->Services. There you'll see a lot of other keys. Under these three (dllhost, scvhost, syslock) there should be a key named "Parameters". And in that a value named "Application". What is the data that is associated with these three "Applications"?
Metal Massacre
C:\winnt\system32\shared\dllhost.exe
C:\winnt\system32\drivers\scvhost.exe sample.config
C:\winnt\system32\strings.bat

That what you wanted?
Bobbi Flekman
Hi Metal Massacre,

 Yes!!!! These were what I was after!

Go to Online malware scan and submit C:\winnt\system32\shared\dllhost.exe.

Tell me the result.

Do the same for C:\winnt\system32\drivers\scvhost.exe

In Explorer right click on C:\winnt\system32\strings.bat and choose edit. Notepad will open. Can you post the text it contains.

Then we can determine whether these are bad or not.
Metal Massacre
Curiouser and curiouser...I submit those file paths and it says that I uploaded 0KB. So I check the file path, and those folders do not contain those actual files. I'm sorry for making this so incredibly difficult crying.gif
Metal Massacre
Hmm did a little digging I find all all the files in my C:\WINNT\system32 folder.....like say for instance: C:\WINNT\system32\DLLHOST.EXE

Would those be what I'm looking for?

Also I'm not exactly sure what you mean by editing the strings.bat file, I can't even find it crying.gif Again sorry for making this complicated.
Bobbi Flekman
Hi MetalMassacre,

that doesn't matter ;) I like a challenge. LOL Are you sure that you have all hidden files showing?

How do I show hidden files?

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as Export.bat and save it on your Desktop.

CODE
dir C:\winnt\system32\shared\dllhost.exe /a h | file1.txt
dir C:\winnt\system32\drivers\scvhost.exe /a h | file2.txt
dir C:\winnt\system32\strings.bat /a h | file3.txt
copy File1.txt +File2.txt + File3.txt = Output.txt
del /q File1.txt
del /q File2.txt
del /q File2.txt
notepad Output.txt
del /q Output.txt

Locate Export.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. This will open Notepad with some text in it. Post that. See if that gives something.
Metal Massacre
Yah I tried viewing hidden files to see if they were in those original folders but they weren't. Which I think is pretty odd....anyways the files I found which were just in my system32 folder should I go ahead and scsn those? Also this time when I paste the information into notepad and open the export.bat file command prompt opens then closes really fast.
Bobbi Flekman
Hi MetalMassacre,

Let's change that a bit.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as Export.bat and save it on your Desktop.

CODE
dir C:\winnt\system32\shared\dllhost.exe /a h | file1.txt
dir C:\winnt\system32\drivers\scvhost.exe /a h | file2.txt
dir C:\winnt\system32\strings.bat /a h | file3.txt
copy File1.txt +File2.txt + File3.txt = C:\Output.txt
del /q File1.txt
del /q File2.txt
del /q File2.txt

Locate Export.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. When you click that a file will appear in c:\ called output.txt. Can you post that?
Metal Massacre
Argh, no it won't even stay open. Is there something wrong with my computer? :(
Bobbi Flekman

*

You mean to say that at c:\ there is no file called output.txt? If there is, what happens when you double click on it?
Metal Massacre
Nope it's not even creating the output.txt file, command prompt opens then closes, and the output.txt file is still empty.

Edit: That post makes no sense. I'm saying it creates the output file but it's still empty.
Bobbi Flekman
This is getting weirder and weirder...

Let's see if something is still lurking under the covers... Save Silent Runners.vbs to your desktop and double click on it to run. This will make a file called something like "Startup Programs (UserName) DateTime.txt". Double click on it, so it'll open in Notepad. Post the text here.

Can you also do this? Press "Start"->"Run...", type cmd.exe and press Enter. A DOS box will open up. What happens when you type dir in it and press Enter?
Metal Massacre
That's what pops up.

Hi Metal Massacre,

At least we see that there's no problem with the cmd.exe and its windows.

A colleague gave the tip to alter the batch file a little so....

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as Export.bat and save it on your Desktop.

CODE
dir /a C:\winnt\system32\shared\dllhost.exe > file1.txt
dir /a C:\winnt\system32\drivers\scvhost.exe > file2.txt
dir /a C:\winnt\system32\strings.bat > file3.txt
copy File1.txt + File2.txt + File3.txt = C:\Output.txt
del /q File1.txt
del /q File2.txt
del /q File2.txt

Start Notepad C:\Output.txt

Locate Export.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the text here.

Does this work?

In the SillentRunners log I saw one bad thing.

Delete the following files in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\WINNT\Tasks\81D5F0068D6265D2.job

Hazaah the Export.bat thing works!

Hi Metal Massacre,

let's throw it upside down... I just know these files are here. Can we see them when the services aren't online...

You might want to save this page on your favorites, so you can find it again when you return. You can also click on your name and click on "Find All Posts" to find your thread.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

O23 - Service: dllhost - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\system32\srvany.exe
O23 - Service: scvhost - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\system32\srvany.exe
O23 - Service: syslock - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\system32\srvany.exe

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked". Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

Are you sure that hidden files are showing? How do I show hidden files?
At the end if the fix you can return the files to hidden status if you want.

Delete the following files in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\WINNT\Tasks\81D5F0068D6265D2.job

Can you run the last batchfile again, and post those results...

Thanks.
Metal Massacre
That's the new log file. And yes I double checked that hidden files are showing, and even system important files. I just can't seem to the find that particular file. When I ge tto the folder it just shows something called "Add Scheduled Tasks" when I put in: C:\WINNT\Tasks\81D5F0068D6265D2.job in the adress bar it asks me if I want to save/open that file.

 In that case I think the [file missing] in the Silent Runners log was a little misleading. I thought it meant, the file it wanted to execute was missing. I guess the job itself is missing.

The log seems to be clean. How's your system running? Any strange things going on?

This log looks clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....
Metal Massacre
Actually my computer is running pretty smoothly. Now I can use the restart screen as well. Had a little trouble yesterday but that was an unrelated problem. I can't thank you enough for the help ahah.gif

In regards to the other stuff I do use Firefox, and I keep my computer patched and up to date. I don't have a firewall, or spyware blocker unfortunately. I'll check out the article, and those programs you linked, thanks again for the help!
Bobbi Flekman
Yay!!! Sorry it took us so long to realise that we just should have fixed those lines...

Happy surfing!
Metal Massacre
No harm done, in the end my computer is working better than it was previously. So I'm happy ahah.gif
Metal Massacre
Hmm I have a quick follow up question (sorry heh) it seems that my computer is always using over half my ram at ALL times. On a fresh restart and everything, it's been like that for awhile now just usually slips my mind, the reason I'm asking now is I have this nifty little system resource monitor staring me in the face at all times so I can't help but wonder why my ram is being used up like that? I'm not sure if this is a proper question for this board, but I don't have much to lose now do I? I have tried closing my big memory intensive programs but it hardly puts a dent into the ram usage, any suggestions?
Bobbi Flekman
How much RAM do you have? Is this something new? At the moment I have no idea...
Metal Massacre
I've got 512MB ram, it's not a new issue actually. Normally I never notice this sort of thing but I've got a system resource counter on my desktop and it's basically staring me in the face. So I can't help but wonder what's up.
Bobbi Flekman
You use some stuff from Norton, could that be it? I know that Norton Utilities comes with WinDoctor (or something like that) that keeps track of these things.
Can you post a screen shot?
Metal Massacre
Sorry I've been away no internet connection. I don't have anything norton, or anything called WinDoctor on my computer as far as I know :-\
Bobbi Flekman
Please refresh my memory..... You've been away for a month... How is the computer running? Any problems?
Metal Massacre
It's running a lot better, the ram problem has been fixed as well.
Bobbi Flekman
Ok... Then I'll consider this topic closed ;)
