You will be restarting into Safe mode later. Here's help if you need it.

To use the F8 key to start Windows XP in Safe mode
Restart the computer.
Some computers have a progress bar that refers to the word BIOS. Others may not let you know what is happening.
As soon as the BIOS loads, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. If this happens, restart the computer and try again.
Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, select Safe mode and then press Enter.

------
Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default.
Reset your search settings first.

Open Folder Options>view and check your settings:
Select
Show hidden files and folders
Display the contents of system folders
Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files
Next go to Search and look down to More advanced options and click onthe chevron next to it.
Be sure the first three boxes are selected:
Search System folders
Search Hidden Files and folders
Search SubFolders
--------

Run HijackThis again and post the new log in your next reply in this same topic.

Thanks for your reply. When I ran HijackThis the .dll file in the lines ending with #37049 was different to the one listed in your reply to delete. This .dll seems to change each time I run HijackThis. It is currently wcprl.dll. Is it ok to have HijackThis fix this file in these lines even though the name has changed? Current HijackThis enclosed.

Please disable SpybotSD TeaTimer, as it may hinder the removal of the infection. You can enable it after you're clean.
To disable SpybotSD TeaTimer:

Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
Check yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on System Startup icon.
Uncheck Teatimer box.
Click Allow Change box.

You can follow this link if you need help: http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm
_ _ _ _

--------

Download CWShredder from this page:
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshr...r_download.html
Don't run it yet.
--------
Download AboutBuster created by Rubber Ducky.

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip

Unzip AboutBuster to the Desktop then click the "Update Button" then click "Check for Update" and download the updates and then click "Exit". We don't want you to run it yet. Only get the updates so it is ready to run later in safe mode.
-----------------------------------------

Be sure you are signed off the Internet.

Go to Start >Run and type
Services.msc
Press enter.

When the Services Console opens, scroll down the list and find this entry:
Network Security Service (NSS)

Double click on Network Security Service (NSS) to bring up the properties page.
Stop the service and set it to disabled. Apply and close the services console.
-------------------

Restart into Safe mode.

Go to Start>Run and type Hijackthis. Press enter to start HijackThis. DO NOT OPEN ANYTHING ELSE!

Select these items and press the fix checked button:

Much better. Is everything running well now? IF so, go ahead and re-enable tea timer.

If the answer is yes, we have just a couple of things left to do:
Once you have rebooted a time or two, be sure everything is in working order. It is time to flush your system restore points. Once you do that you will not be able to correct any problems you may have now by going back to a point before today.

After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.

Check the box labeled Turn off System restore.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.
----------------------------
Also here is an excellent source for tips to tighten security. Follow the advice and get the free downloads to help avoid some of these problems in the future.

Things do not appear to be ok. I re-enabled teatimer. I then got lots of dialog boxes "Spybot-Search and Destroy has detecte an important registry entry that has been changed". Assuming that these were the deliberate repair changes that you asked me to make I allowed several of these. However, several of the file names seemed to me to be ones that you had asked me to delete eg nethr.exe. I then got cold feet and exited from the spybot resident. On rebooting I obtained the following messages: Windows cannot find c:\windows\system32\nethr.exe, winlk32.exe, sdkda, netdo32, msdr, nrtj, iexc. The Spybot S&D dialog boxes reappeared: has detected an important registry entry that has been changed. System startup global entry value changed; zonelabs client, nethr.exe, winlk.exe, sdkda32, netdo32, msdr, ntrj, iexc.

You should have allowed the changes. Those files were deleted and their respective registry entries removed. But tea timer has now put them back. And it appears that at least one of the files wasn't removed because the infection is active again. I'll be back shortly with cleanup instructions. After I have you fix this, allow all changes when you enable tea timer again. It will be asking until it cycles through the changes we made.

Please stop using the Quote button. It makes it more work for me to scroll through your posts.

Please follow these instructions carefully and as written!

Go to Start >Run and type
Services.msc
Press enter.

When the Services Console opens, scroll down the list and find this entry:
Network Security Service (NSS)

Double click on Network Security Service (NSS) to bring up the properties page.
Stop the service and set it to disabled. Apply and close the services console

Restart into Safe mode.

Go to Start>Run and type Hijackthis. Press enter to start HijackThis. DO NOT OPEN ANYTHING ELSE!
Select these items and press the fix checked button:

Run HijackThis again and post the new log in your next reply in this same topic.

Remember, you have made changes. Tea Timer will not understand that they were good changes. If you panic and refuse to allow them you'll likely be reinfected.

Sorry about using quote. I thought the quote and reply next to each other were 2 separate buttons, so I pressed what I thought was reply. I have now discovered the add reply button!

You have asked me to select and fix various Hijackthis items when in safe mode. However the items you describe as .......C:\WINDOWS\system32..... appear only as C:\WINDOWS\...... If I run Hijackthis in regular windows then the items appear as C:\WINDOWS\system32....

Also, should I stop teatimer, as you have previously asked?

I don't know what to tell you. You must use judgement when cleaning this up. These files have a look to them.

Let's try it like this. this is a different method and requires careful attention. Cop y these instructoins to notepad so you can read them while in Safe Mode.

PLEASE BE Careful! You were all cleaned up and then you reinfected yourself by not allowing the changes we made. If you re-enable Tea Timer again, you must allow the changes we made to take hold. Otherwise we are back at square one.
-----------

Please disable SpybotSD TeaTimer, as it may hinder the removal of the infection. You can enable it after you're clean.
To disable SpybotSD TeaTimer:

Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
Check yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on System Startup icon.
Uncheck Teatimer box.
Click Allow Change box.

You can follow this link if you need help: http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm
_ _ _ _
Sign off and close all internet Explorer Windows.

Go to Start >Run and type
Services.msc
Press enter.

When the Services Console opens, scroll down the list and find this entry:
Network Security Service (NSS)

Double click on Network Security Service (NSS) to bring up the properties page.
Stop the service and set it to disabled. Apply and close the services console

That looks much better. Remember that if you enable Tea Timer it is going to find all those changes and you need to allow those changes.

Let's get rid of this service usng a script (vbs)

(Service: Network Security Service (NSS) ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nethr.exe" /s (file missing))

Copy the contents of the code box to notepad.
Name the file service.vbs
Save as type: All files
Double click on service.vbs to run it.

If you get a message that a malicious script is trying to run, please allow this to run.
It is going to delete that service which was created as a part of your CWS infection.

CODE
strComputer = "."
Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:" _
   & "{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" & strComputer & "\root\cimv2")
Set colListOfServices = objWMIService.ExecQuery _
("Select * from Win32_Service Where DisplayName = 'Network Security Service (NSS)'")
For Each objService in colListOfServices
 If objService.State = "Stopped" then
MsgBox "Stopped Already"
Else
 objService.StopService()
 MsgBox "Service Stopped"

End IF
   objService.Delete()

Next

MsgBox "Done"

You will get two message boxes. Note what they say.

Restart the computer.

Delete this file if found: (Be careful to delete and not double click on it. Right click on the file and click Delete on the menu.)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nethr.exe

Post a startuplist please. In Hijackthis press the Config Button
Click Misc Tools
Check both boxes next to the Generate StartupList log and then click the generate startuplist log button.

Paste the contents into your next reply here.
Jules52
I saved service.vbs onto the desktop. When it is double clicked I get the following error message:

Windows Script Host
Script: C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\Desktop\service.vbs
Line: 6
Char: 1
Error: 0x8004100A
Code: 8004100A
Source: (null)

I clicked on the ok of this box and nothing happened other than the box disappearing.
Mosaic1
You have an Operating system problem and it is not always possible to repair it.

Let's try though.

Copy the contents of the code box to notepad.
Name the file fixwmi.bat
Save as Type: All Files

Double click on fixwmi.bat to run it.

This is going to be registering a lot of files and doing a lot of other work. It will take quite a while to run. Even if you think it is doing nothing, it is working in the background. This is not like a regular windows program. Please be patient. When it has finished it will tell you. You'll see DONE reboot in the Command window.

Then you will need to restart the computer.

CODE
net stop winmgmt
c:
cd %systemroot%\system32\wbem
rd /S /Q repository

regsvr32 /s %systemroot%\system32\scecli.dll
regsvr32 /s %systemroot%\system32\userenv.dll

mofcomp cimwin32.mof
mofcomp cimwin32.mfl
mofcomp rsop.mof
mofcomp rsop.mfl
for /f %%s in ('dir /b /s *.dll') do regsvr32 /s %%s
for /f %%s in ('dir /b *.mof') do mofcomp %%s
for /f %%s in ('dir /b *.mfl') do mofcomp %%s
echo DONE reboot
pause

Try the service.vbs again and see if it works now.
Let me know how it goes.

Afterwards if you have no success, either you will have to do a repair install, or possibly a total reinstall, or live with the fact that your WMI is not working correctly. But that's for later and we can discuss it.
Jules52
I've run fixwmi.bat. Unfortunately service.vbs gives the same error message.
Mosaic1
Let's try something. No guarantees it will work.

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default.
Reset your search settings first.

Open Folder Options>view and check your settings:
Select
Show hidden files and folders
Display the contents of system folders
Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files

Go to Start >Run and type
cmd.exe

Press enter.

When the command prompt opens type this and press enter

net stop winmgmt

Wait for the service stopped message.
----------------------

Go to Start >Run and type
WBEM
Press enter
This will open the WBEM folder.

Once iside the WBEM folder, find the folder named
Repository

Right click on the Repository folder and click Rename on the menu.

Rename it to OldRepository.
----------------------

Go to Start.Run and type Inf
Press enter. This will open the inf folder.
----------------------

Find this file:

wbemoc.inf

Right click on it and click install.

You may be prompted for your install CD.

When finished, restart the computer.

Once back in Windows Try the vbs again.

Let me know how you did.
Jules52
Installing wbemoc.inf did not do anything other than briefly blank the inf directory. The vbs gave the same error message as before.
Mosaic1
And you did restart, correct?

go to start >Run and type WBEM
Press enter
Once in the WBEM folder be sure you have a new folder named Repository.

That's all I can do for you. Now you have to decide whether or not you want to reinstall Windows to repair the problem. Or leave it this way
Jules52
Yes, I did restart as instructed. The Repository folder is present in WBEM. As we can do no more, should I enable teatimer? Is it now safe to backup various files to my external hard disk prior to re-installing windows? In the meantime can the computer be used normally, accepting the WMI problem - I'm desparate to send and receive emails. I would like to know what Blue Trek Error Nuker is. It got past my wireless router firewall, my zonealarm firewall and Norton antivirus (virus definitions etc updated only 1 day before my problem). I probably need a different forum for these answers and I would be grateful if you could tell me which.
Mosaic1
Enable Tea Timer and say yes to all the changes we made.

Sure. Go ahead and backup your files.

A lot of people are running windows without ever knowing they have this WMI problem. It is not apparent until you try to run a script. You may want to see if you have any problems and then decide not to reinstall.

Blue Trek Error Nuker indicates the infection we just cleaned up.

------

Follow the advice and get the free downloads to help avoid some of these problems in the future.
http://www.computercops.biz/postt7736.html
Mosaic1
REgarding the WMI error. IF you find that yo are seeing WMI errors on screen or if you go into event viewer and see repeated errors in the coming weeks or days, then do a reinstall.

Start >Run
Type eventvwr.msc
Press enter.
Jules52
Well, I guess that's it! I've now completed everything and all seems ok. Thanks a million for all your effort and patience. You are a real star! :) :) :) :) :)
Mosaic1
Thank you. Take care.
Jules52
Oh Dear! I've just run Spybot S&D as a precaution before making a financial transaction. Spybot came up with the Trek Blue Error Nuker :( . 5 entries, only 4 of which could be fixed. :(

I've fixed the O2 items you listed. OOps, should I have turned teatimer off first. After the fix Spybot asked if the changes were allowed for several files. I allowed the changes.

When you say close all folders and IE, does that mean including leaving your site whilst I make the changes? I usually minimize your site whilst carrying out the changes, maximising every now and again to see the instructions. Maybe I should print them out each time? However for the above fixes I did print out the list and exit from your site.

Those are registry leftovers and are not doing anything. When you clean Spyware you should not be connected to the Internet. Even Hijackthis alerts you about closing before atempting to remove a bho. These are just leftovers and no files were present, but still, you need to follow directions or we cannot help effectively.

If you had been able to use that script, the service entries would be gone.
About: Buster should have removed the rest. Those are just entries in Add remove Programs. Do not touch those. I'll be back shortly with a registgry file you can try to use to remove these leftovers.
Yes. To remove a bho you absolutely have to have no Internet Explorer or window folder s open.
Mosaic1
Copy the contents of the Code Box to Notepad.
Name the file as fix.reg
Save as Type All Files
Save on the desktop
CODE
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HSA]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SE]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SW]

I am leaving the service entries. They are not loading. And the file is missing.
Jules52
Have run fix.reg. Anything else? Is my system ok now? Should I run Spybot again? If so, do I now ignore the Trek Blue Error Nuker entry if it appears?
Mosaic1
Go ahead and run Spybot again. Let me know what it finds.
Ru hijackthis once more too. I want to be sure that no more new entries appear.
Jules52
I ran Adaware SE Personal and it found and removed CoolWWW. This evening I ran Adaware again and it found nothing. I then ran Spybot and it also found nothing. Looks good. I hope.

mmm...... those O2-BHOs look suspicious!
Mosaic1
No. those BHO's are not suspicious. they have no file. But they do keep coming back. Did you allow all changes when you restarted Tea Timer?

Disable tea timer.

Run hijackthis.

Close all Folders and Internet Explorer Windows.

Fix these again:

Enable Tea Timer and say yes to any changes it spots.

See if they stay away. If not, this may be a registry permissions problem and we'll have to fix it.
Jules52
Sorry my responses are delayed. I'm in the UK and have to keep getting up during the night! Did as you said and removed the 'no file' files. Enabling teatimer produced no reponse from Spybot. A repeat Hijackthis does not show the 'no file' files. However, Restarted computer. Repeated Hijackthis - the same 17 'no file' files reappeared. Went through the procedure again. Same effect.

This is the present hijackthis showing the 'no file' files removed.

Can you make them appear again please? And then don't remove them. I want to see something.
Mosaic1
Don't restart. Just see if running Hijackthis again shows them.
Jules52
Only scrolled down to your first reply. So restarted computer. The 'no file' files re-appeared. Disabled teatimer. Ran Hijackthis and fixed problems. (incidentally, subsequent to the first fix of these files today, subsequent fixing has resulted in the hijackthis files list screen going blank, remaining so after at least 2 min. Task manager reports the program as running). Enabled teatimer. Ran hijackthis. The files do not show. Every time I run Hijackthis without a computer restart the files do not reappear. Whenever I restart, they reappear, the same 17.

Present Hijackthis:-

Something is going on. Let's do this. REmove them again using hijackthis. Then boot right to Safe Mode. Go to Start >Run and type hijackthis.
Press enter.
Make a log. Do not fix anything. Name the log safe.log

Create a Startuplist. Name it Safe sl.log

Restart back into windows and post the contents of both safe mode logs. I'll try to be here, but it is very late here and I may log off before you get back. Or not. When you post, see if my name is here.

I want to look into this. I don't like what is going on with hijackthis. There may be something invisible running.
Jules52
What is this Startuplist and how do I create it?
We will now have to stop for a while as I am away for the next 10 days. I will contact you again on Monday 1st August. In the meantime here is the safe.log created by Hijackthis in safe mode as directed. Many thanks for your help :)
