That looks clean. We can pretty much assume that Tea Timer wsa putting back those entries. If you want to use Tea Timer go ahead and enable it. But let the changes you made be allowed. You'll see a lot of nasty names because those are the changes you have made. Tea Timer just sees changes, it doesn't judge them.

I turned teatimer back on but got no request to allow changes. The latest Hijackthis shows that the mystery entries have returned as you expected. Despite this, is the computer finally clean and safe to use, in particular in the sending of emails to people which I have stopped doing as I don't want to infect anyone?

It looks clean but how annoying is that? If it were my computer, I would uninstall Spybot and dump Tea timer.

Clean out those entries and then reinstall Spybot , enable tea timer and hope that settled it.

Have fixed entries. Uninstalled Spybot (v1.3). Downloaded and installed new version of Spybot (v1.4); enabled Teatimer. Restarted computer. The 'no file' entries have not returned as shown by latest Hijackthis. Is it now safe to use the computer as normal, backup files to my external hard disk and send emails with attachments?

I've just run Spybot and it has found Windows Security Center as a problem. I have not fixed this problem as I expect its ok. If it is ok do I just check the Windows Security Centre box in Spybot > Settings > Ignore Products?

Go ahead and ignore that if it is for the Security Center. False positives do happen.

Once you have rebooted a time or two, be sure everything is in working order. It is time to flush your system restore points. Once you do that you will not be able to correct any problems you may have now by going back to a point before today.


After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.

Check the box labeled Turn off System restore.


Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

I switched on the computer, saw your message, rebooted the computer and then ran Spybot (Teatimer is on). It found Windows Security Centre.AntiVirusDisableNotify (1 entry) which I assume is legal. However it also found CoolWWWSearch.HomeSearch (15 entries) !!!!!!!! Where on earth did this thing come from. Spybot managed to fix 13 entries but not c:\windows\lpxxxn.dat and c:\windows\hxbxy.dat.

Security center has a notify you if there is no firewall or AV .

Scroll to near the bottom where you'll find links to some how to's for security center and set these yourself. This will give you a better understanding of what's happening. I would leave the notice on.

Spybot has had a few updates recently and probably found some leftovers because it now knows to look for them.


C:\windows\lpxxxn.dat and

c:\windows\hxbxy.dat.


See if you can find them and delete them.

When I ran Spybot I set it to ignore Windows Security Centre.AntiVirusDisableNotify. I do not use the XP firewall but instead use the free Zonealarm as I understand this is better (your opinion?). I use Norton Antivirus and the antivirus definitions etc are completely uptodate. My Windows Security Centre program indicates that both Zonealarm and Norton Antivirus are enabled and active.

I have deleted the 2 CoolWWWSearch files.

I then restarted the computer and ran Spybot. No problems were found. I restarted again and ran Spybot again. Still no problems were found.

Am I now in a position to perform your instructions to flush the restore points?
