Full Version: Aurora-part of the ABI network
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
yarek
For some time now I have been struggling with Aurora-part of ABI Network. I researched that and found out that I am not the only one and You have helped other people solve the problem with continous pop-ups. Like many others I do not know where I got it form since I do not download anything from the internet but the fact is that I have it. I bought Norton Internet Security in December but that did not help. I am bothered not with the pop up ads but with the massages form Norton Internet security when the pupup is trying to show up on the screen. It is accompanied by a massage from Aurora and a brief pause in anything I am doing on the computer. I did everything you said in "guidelines for posting in this forum". I downloaded the programs and ran them as I was supposed to. Adaware found over 100 objects but soon I found out that nothing chaged, I also tryied Spybot, same thing. Now I'll do the hijackthis and send you the log. I am really going nuts turning off those alerts. I'm a student so I do not have a lot of money to pay to fix it so I'am trying, please help.
yarek

You may want to print out or make a copy of these instructions before starting, because you will not be able to connect to the internet during most of this fix.

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  5. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

Download CCleaner and install, but do not run it yet.

Please download the Nail/Aurora Spyware Fix from NoIdea.US. (Alternate download link: dknoppix mirror)

Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run yet.

Reboot into Safe Mode. To do this with Windows XP, you can follow these steps from Microsoft:
  1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when you the Boot Menu appears.
  2. Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
  3. When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on nailfix.cmd that you unzipped earlier. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Next, run CCleaner.
  1. Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
  2. If you are running Firefox: ,then click on the "Applications" tab and uncheck "Cookies" under "Firefox".
  3. Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.

Now run Ewido again.
  1. Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack....
  2. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  3. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Then run HijackThis, click Scan, and place a checkmark by the following item:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Finally, restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Hi yarek,

It is not a good idea to have multiple anti virus products running. These programs get in each other's way. Use just one as an "On Access" scanner. You can keep the other one for "On Demand" scanning.

Go to Online malware scan and submit C:\YDPDict\watch.exe.

Tell me the result.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://ok-search.com/

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked".

Restart your computer in Safe Mode. How do I Safe Boot my computer?

Show hidden files. How do I show hidden files?
At the end if the fix you can return the files to hidden status if you want.

Delete the following files in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\WINDOWS\satmat.exe

Delete the following folders in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker

Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

Hello,
Thank you for all your help. I did what you told me but after I showing hidden files I went to C:\WINDOWS\ and there was nothing in red. Insted of satmat.exe I found only satmat (without extention) I did not removed it as it was not red. The other one in C:\Program Files\ called Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker was not there, nor there was anythig in red, so I assume it was deleted before.
Please tell me which of my virus products (if you are able to tell what I have) are running together and which is best to leave "on access".
The results from online malware scan was "nothing found" from top to bottom
Thank You very much, I appreciate your help.
yarek

That was the file to be deleted. I think you didn't have extensions showing.

You have Ewido and Norton running. Since you've downloaded Ewido on my request, I suggest that you keep Norton for the "On Access" one.

This log looks clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....
yarek
Hello,
Thank You for all your help. I went back and deleted that "satmat".
Everything runs great, I do not know how you do that, I wish I knew at least a lilttle of what you know about all that internet security/ protection. It was impressive. I am really gratefull for all the help. After I am done writing I will be more than happy to make a donation. You are incredible and I am happy you could help me.
If you could naswer few other question I would grately appreciate it.
1. Does "on access" mean when I want to use it I turn it onotherwise it is off? (In other words, it is not running constantly)
2.I downloaded zonealarm, spywware blaster, and I have ad-aware se, ccleaner and Norton Internet security, also ewido. I know I cannot run all of them, Please tell me which I should have runnig all the time and which I should turn on periodicaly, which should be disabled.

I am sorry if those are "stupid questions" but I downloaded them, read about them but still do not know which of those are best to use.

I appreciate your help. It was great, I'll come back with other problems if I encounter such. Thanks again. I have no problems now.
Donation is on the way. Thanks
Yarek
PS I can see that you are from Amsterdam, at least that is what the info on the left says (I assume Amsterdam, Holland). I happend to been there. It is a great city, canals are fantastic, I took a boat ride, loved it. I wish other cities around the world had so many bicycles in the city. I had a good time.
Thanks again for your help

We, at Gladiator, work completely voluntary. We don't take donations, but if you would like to make a donation to your local animal shelter I'd be happy as well.

Thanks.

1. Does "on access" mean when I want to use it I turn it onotherwise it is off? (In other words, it is not running constantly)
Nope.... It's the other way around. An "On Access"-scanner scans the file the moment something accesses it, for example tries to open it. Simple example would be a word processor. You open the word processor and the word processor executable file gets scanned (and all the other files it needs, for that matter). Then you open a document in it, and that file gets scanned. So as soon as you access a file it gets scanned. The other version is "On Demand", which means that you explicitly tell the scanner to scan your hard disc(s). The problem with having more than one "On Access"-scanner is that they tend to not play nice together. When you open a virus, they both want to lock that file and scan it. Even if they can somehow manage that, they will both scream bloody murder for finding a virus. And you say kill it! The first one tries to delete the file, then the second one tries to delete that same file.... Many potentail spots for problems here. When they can't access the file because of the other, your computer can hang. How do you want to delete a file, which is already deleted? Etc.

You already have Norton Internet Security, so there's no need for Zone Alarm. What I said about multiple anti-virus programs can be applicable to multiple firewalls as well, but in a lesser mode. If you want multiple firewalls I suggest you use a hardware one in your router and a software one. Spyware Blaster manipulates the Registry as to prevent from infection. Just run that once in a while, after updating, and you're set to go; same goes for IE-SpyAD. From what you said I'd have an anti-virus and firewall running all the time. In my system I have a SpywareBlaster/IE-SpyAd/Spybot manipulated Registry, a hardware firewall, a continuous running software firewall (Kerio) and anti-virus (Norman). And on the running anti-spyware I have MRUBlaster, SpywareGuard and the resident section from Spybot. Just by switching from Internet Explorer to Opera or Firefox will prevent you from getting a lot of infections.

Remember. There's not such thing as a stupid question, only stupid answers!
