Man..... I had this thing cleaned up a couple months ago, but it's just getting impossible to use again. I'm using firefox as my browser, but I keep getting window upon window saying that IE can't be opened. Also, I'm getting the aurora pop-ups on firefox. BHOdemon shows pok184hi.dll and nothing else. and ad-aware is coming up with a couple hundred of files to delete each time I run it. I appreciate any help.

Hi scalex2727,

You may want to print out or make a copy of these instructions before starting, because you will not be able to connect to the internet during most of this fix.

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  5. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

Download CCleaner and install, but do not run it yet.

Please download the Nail/Aurora Spyware Fix from NoIdea.US. (Alternate download link: dknoppix mirror)

Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run yet.

Reboot into Safe Mode. To do this with Windows XP, you can follow these steps from Microsoft:
  1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when you the Boot Menu appears.
  2. Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
  3. When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on nailfix.cmd that you unzipped earlier. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Next, run CCleaner.
  1. Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
  2. If you are running Firefox: ,then click on the "Applications" tab and uncheck "Cookies" under "Firefox".
  3. Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.

Now run Ewido again.
  1. Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack....
  2. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  3. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Then run HijackThis, click Scan, and place a checkmark by the following item:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Finally, restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Hi scalex2727,

Please move HijackThis to another location, preferably c:\Program Files\HijackThis. Anywhere is fine, other than your Desktop or a Temp folder. If HijackThis is in a temporary folder you run the risk of accidentally deleting the backups or it clutters your desktop with all the backups.
If you use Windows XP it might be that you just double clicked on the file HijackThis.exe, but that only extracts the file to a temporary folder. Please select the file and Extract it to a folder.

How do you make a permanent folder:

Click "My Computer", then "C:\" and then on "Program Files".
In the menu bar, "File"->"New"->"Folder".
That will create a folder named "New Folder", which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have "C:\Program Files\HijackThis". Put your HijackThis.exe there.

Please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here.

Also post a new log from HijackThis.
scalex2727
Hey Bobbi, Sorry about the HJT mix up. The Panda scanner is for IE only. Do you want me to re-install? Here is the new HJT log.

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe, but I guess it already came back.

Hi scalex2727,

You've uninstalled IE... That'll make my job a lot harder...

Download http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'.

Download rkfiles.zip
Extract the contents to a permanent folder

Restart your computer in Safe Mode. How do I Safe Boot my computer?

Show hidden files. How do I show hidden files?
At the end if the fix you can return the files to hidden status if you want.

Doubleclick rkfiles.bat to run it. It will take some time, but wait until the DOS box closes and restart your computer.

Post the contents of C:\log.txt.

It is not a good idea to have multiple anti virus products running. These programs get in each other's way. Use just one as an "On Access" scanner. You can keep the other one for "On Demand" scanning. This might be why things aren't going the way we want. Can you also run the instructions for nail again.
scalex2727
Ok, here is C:\log.txt and a new hijack this log. Also, I disabled BHOdemon because it is the only active scanner that I new about. It seems like things are starting to run pretty good. Thnx.

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL FILES FOUND BY THIS METHOD ARE NOT BAD FILES, THERE MIGHT BE LEGIT FILES LISTED AND PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHILE FIXING. IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF WHAT IT IS LEAVE THEM ALONE.

Hi scalex2727,

Download Process Explorer from http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

Start HijackThis and scan. Find the O4 line that looks like this
QUOTE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [prkzqud] c:\windows\system32\blapqqn.exe r

Run Process Explorer and find the Process in the list of Processes.
Select the process and click Process > Suspend.

Then in HijackThis click Config > Misc Tools > Delete a file on reboot...
In the explorer Window select the file <<<<<<insert the filename from the log>>>>>>
When prompted if you want to reboot click YES
Leave Process explorer running with the process suspended.

After the reboot check the item in HijackThis. Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

Afterwards post a new log from HijackThis and a log from RkFiles.
scalex2727

I know. That is why you have to suspend, and not close the program. It renames itself just about any time you look at it, so it's very hard to get rid of, and it reinstalls the nail infection... Can you try it again? Be sure not to terminate the process in any way. From several sources I have heard that this fix should work... If not, I call in the extra troops...

You didn't post a complete log from HijackThis.
scalex2727
Cool, I got it to work. I had to boot in safe mode and run the nailfix 1st. Here are my new logs.

Hi scalex2727,

QUOTE
Cool, I got it to work. I had to boot in safe mode and run the nailfix 1st. Here are my new logs.
Yay!!!! And... Safe Mode? The fix didn't say that. I'll relay this to the author of the fix, and see if this was accidentally omitted.

Let's see if Nail/Aurora is really gone!

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

O2 - BHO: Band Class - {01F44A8A-8C97-4325-A378-76E68DC4AB2E} - C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll (file missing)

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Win Server Updt] C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked".

Restart your computer in Safe Mode. How do I Safe Boot my computer?

Show hidden files. How do I show hidden files?
At the end if the fix you can return the files to hidden status if you want.

Delete the following files in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\WINDOWS\hpuvkcciru.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe

Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

Hi scalex2727,

This log looks clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....
