Full Version: Help! ABI and PartyPoker infecting my computer
Gladiator Security Forum > Malware Help Forum > HELP! Think you are Infected?
Mich1228
For the past week I have been noticing PartyPoker appears on my desktop and I dont even download the program. so I delete it everytime it appears. Well that made me feel something was on my computer. So I go into add/remove programs and see this program called The ABI Network-A Division Of Direct Revenue. So I try to uninstall it. Well there is an error, it cant find the file:///c:/WINNT/abiuninst.htm. So I do a virus scan with my Norton AntiVirus Scanner which is updated. So I delete what it finds and guess what ? that didnt work. I still got PartyPoker on my desktop. And I dont know how to uninstall that ABI. Well then I download Spybot Search and Destroy and remove what pops up and that still doesnt work. Then I uninstall my virus scanner and install McAffe because its free since im an AOL user. Well I remove these 4 things:
Adware-KeenValue
IMIServer.download
Adware-abetterintrnt
Prockill-CR
Now I havent gotten PartyPoker on my desktop again but I still need to remove the ABI. And then someone told me to get AIMFIX and that found 2 spywares but then I did it again and those two still came up so I feel that AIMFIX doesnt work properly. Anyone know how I can remove that? And anyone know how I can make sure the spyware from PartyPoker is totally removed? Do I need to delete certain things from my registry? If anyone could please help me I would greatly appreciate it.

First:
Download *Hijack This!* (current version is 199.1)
http://www.castlecops.com/downloads-file-328.html
http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip

Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the Temp folder. Then, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that and copy & paste its contents here.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet. Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Second:
Would you please use HiJackThis to produces startup list and post it here:
1. From HJT main screen, click 'Config' button
2. Click 'Misc Tools' button
3. Check both boxes to the right of 'Generate StartupList Log' button
4. Click 'Generate StartupList Log' button
5. Click 'Yes' in the next dialog
6. Save the log and post a copy in this thread.

Third:
Please create a list of programs that can be removed using Add/Remove Programs
Start HiJackThis
Press 'Config'
Press 'Misc Tools'
Press 'Open Uninstall Manager'
Press 'Save List'
Save the log to a convenient location
Copy the log and post its contents in this thread

Then do the following:
(Note: when you post the new HJT log, please include the header lines. The log begins with "Logfile...."

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://www.noidea.us/easyfile/file.php?...5010747824
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINNT\Nail.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pmixyj] C:\WINNT\System32\pmixyj.exe

O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\svcproc.exe (file missing)

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Then delete the following file(s)/folder(s):
C:\WINNT\System32\pmixyj.exe

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Now I couldnt find exactly where c:\WINNT\System32\pmixyk.exe was so that wasnt deleted. For the help you have given me so far thank you very much i appreciate it! :)
LoPhatPhuud
It appears that little, if anything was accomplished. It is critical that ALL instructions be followed, IN THE ORDER given. If, for any reason, you cannot complete a step, then stop, and post in this thread with the pertinent information.

First:
I asked you to remove two programs using Add/Remove programs. You responded that ABI was not there? When you posted the Uninstall list this was one of the items:
The ABI Network- A Division of Direct Revenue. Unless you had already removed it, it should be there. This is one of your main exploits and perhaps the uninstaller can fix it easily for us.

Second:
I requested you to download Nailfix and unzip it to your Desktop. You responded that in Safe Mode, you could not find it? Due to resolution differences the icon may have been offscreen. This time, put it in the middle of the Desktop. ALso, you can find all desktop content at C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Desktop\.

Third:
Once you have run Nailfix, then run Ewido, making sure that you have it set to fix what it finds.

Last:
You said you could not find where this file was: c:\WINNT\System32\pmixyk.exe

If you mean it was not there, fine, but if you mean you could not find it, I don't know how to specifiy it any better.

Please follow my previous instructions with this post in mind, and post the results in this thread.
Mich1228
Ok So I never deleted ABI but it was some how deleted from my computer, dont ask me how because I dont have a clue. Well I made it so nailfix was in the middle of the desktop and I went into safe mode and guess what it wasnt there so i did a search and it came up but wouldnt let me open it so I restart my computer so I can start it back into normal mode so I can go post back to you and as im pressing F8 my laptop screen turns black but I can still hear the computer make the noise it makes when its on so I try to restart it but nothing works so then I unplug the battery and the light for the battery doesnt even turn off. So then I hit the button to make the laptop turn off completely and it does. I then took out the battery and put it back in and then started up my laptop and it was back to normal. Do you have any idea why that happened? And what can I do to make Nailfix appear when im in safe mode? Sorry if you feel frustrated with the things I tell you but Im not a genius when it comes to this technical computer stuff. I know the basics and a little bit more and thats bout it. And when you first told me to use Ewido you didnt specify for my to click on fix the problems that it found so that was why I didnt do that. But what can I do now to get Nailfix to appear? Maybe should I try to uninstall it and then reinstall it again making sure I do it correctly?
LoPhatPhuud
When you tried to open the Nailfix folder did you get an error message? If so, what was it?

Go ahead and run Ewido in fix mode and post its log in this thread.
Mich1228
something about its shortcut not being found and it asked me if I wanted to delete it but i clicked no.

Please, when I ask for error messages, answering 'something like....", just does not really help. Copy them down, word for word, or take a screen shot, and post the result.

I am not going to worry about Nailfix now. One more step and we can quit.

Check the following items in HiJackThis:
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINNT\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except HiJackThis and press 'Fix Checked'.

Reboot.
Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.
Mich1228
Ok Sorry. Well I did HijackThis and deleted what you said but is what I deleted supposed to come up again on the list when you scan it again? no right? well it did so does that mean it didnt fix it? well here is the log:

Ok I got Nailfix to work in safe mode. So I ran it and then ran HijackThis and clicked on fix for this:
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINNT\Nail.exe

so then I restarted my computer and then rescaned HijackThis and here is my log:

So was this the last step or is there more I need to do to make sure my computer is fixed?
LoPhatPhuud
That looks real good!

Use HiJackThis to remove these two entries:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

There is nothing "bad" about them, but cleanup dictates their removal.

Also, you need to go to Windows Update and install SP1, SP2, and all critical updates. They are mandatory to properly protect your computer.

Finally, here are some other steps you can take...

At last, your system is clean and free of spyware! Want to keep it that way?

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and Internet Explorer. This includes SP1 and SP2 if you use Windows XP. The first defense against infection is a properly patched Operating System.
a. Windows Update: http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Select Internet Options from the Control Panels, or from Internet Explorer (Tools -> Internet Options)
Press 'default level', then OK
Now press "Custom Level."

In the ActiveX controls and plug-ins section set these options:
'Download singed ActiveX controls' - Prompt
'Download unsigned ActiveX controls' - Disable
'Initialize and script ActiveX controls not maked as safe'- Disable
All other options accept the default

3. Download and install the following free programs
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
b. IE/Spyad: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm
c. BHODemon: http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm

4. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
You may also want to consider installing one of the following:
a. Microsoft AntiSpyware: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/s...re/default.mspx
NOTE: MS AntiSpyware only runs on Windows 2000, XP, and 2003.
b. Spybot S&D: http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
c. AdAware: http://www.lavasoft.de/

Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware. I recommend and use Micosoft AntiSpyware.

If you use, or plan on using, additional spyware/malware detection and/or removal programs, please check Items 8 and 9.

5. Install 'Spoofstick"
Spoofstick is a simple browser extension that helps users detect spoofed (fake) websites. This extension is free and installs in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
a. http://www.corestreet.com/spoofstick

6. Reset System Restore
If you are using Windows ME or Windows XP, please reset your System Restore. See Windows help for information.

7. Clean Temporary Files and Folders
Download and install the disk cleanup utility called Cleanup! from here:
http://cleanup.stevengould.org/
http://www.hijackthislogs.com/dl/CleanUp312.exe

Cleanup! will get rid of any malware which may be hiding in your temp folders (a common hiding place). You may also regain a massive amount of disk space.
Here is a tutorial which describes its usage:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial93.html

Run the disk cleanup utility called Cleanup! that you have already downloaded and installed
Check the custom settings to your liking under options, but be sure to delete temporary files and temporary internet files for all user profiles. Also, cleanout the prefetch folder and the recycle bin.
Then reboot into normal mode to let it clean out the remaining files.

8. Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware
Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List. It will save you a lot of grief, as well as money if you are thinking of purchasing. Here is the link: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

9. Anti-Spyware Programs Compared
Want to know just how effective your anti-spyware program is? Wonder how well any of the "rogue" programs listed above work? Check this link for an independent comparison of several anti-spyware programs: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm

10. Alternate Browser
Consider using an alternate browser as your default. I recommend and use Firefox as my primary browser. It is still necessary to keep Internet Explorer current and protected in order to use Windows Update.

For more information about Spyware, the tools available, and other informative material, including information on how you may have been infected in the first place, please check out this link: http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com/index...?showtopic=9857
