Full Version: I haveone that keeps resetting my EI home page.

Dan Barnes
I've run all the things I need to run.

Something's in there that keeps resetting my IE homepage to a very poor search engine.

Also, when I run a particular online game, lots of IE web sites open up, even though they do not show on the task bar. I see them when I Ctrl/Alt/Delete and get the Windows Task Manager.

Here is my HijackThis report:

If you didn't install and want NewDotNet, you need to uninstall it. I would recommend it unless it is serving some important purpose. Here are instructions for uninstalling it, DO NOT fix it with HJT or you may lose your internet connection:

Second:
Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Check the following items in HiJackThis:

Close all open windows except HiJackThis and press 'Fix Checked'.

Reboot.
Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

Let me mention first that it took me so long to reply because I had been waiting to be notified by email that you had posted a reply. I wasn't, even though I'm sure I checked the box to do so at the end of my initial post. No matter.

Even though that URL has the word "remove" at the end of it, I see nothing on that page or any other I could find there, that gives instructions of how to remove it. I also don't see that program in "Add Or Remove Programs" in the Control Panel, so I need further instructions on that.

Now I'm not sure if I should take step two yet. I guess I'll go ahead since you gave me the option of keeping it, even though I don't want it and never installed it, not on purpose, anyway.

Okay, I did it and checked IE and it did not go to that crummy search site, it went to the MS Windows Update site, which is what I want my IE home page to be since that's the only thing I use IE for anymore. I use Mozilla Firefox at your learnéd suggestion. thumbsup.gif I think my problem is that some online games I play may be using IE in the background, I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't think that just using IE for Windows updates would get me that much ad/spyware.

Anyway, here are the HyJackThis results:

And thank you for yor wonderful help! thumbsup.gif

Looks like NewDotNet changed their website around.

Here is the new link: http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html

Uninstall it, then run HiJackThis again and post the new log in this thread. This time, be sure to post the entire log. Last one was chopped off. (see your firt for a comparison)

'Looks like NewDotNet changed their website around. "

Yep. I had to download their uninstall to floppy, and that seemed to work.

How is it that a program can be installed in my computer yet not be in the Control Panel's Uninstall list, nor in the C:Programs folder? Always wondered.

"Uninstall it, then run HiJackThis again and post the new log in this thread. This time, be sure to post the entire log. Last one was chopped off. (see your firt for a comparison)"

Oh, sorry about that.

By the way, whatever malware I have still tries to reset my IE homepage. The difference is, when I get that warning that it is trying, I can tell it to keep the old setting and it does. Before, it would just immediately try again and then the warning message would come up again and I'd be in an endless loop.

I do, however, still get all those IE sites running in the background.

Here's the new HJTrun after uninstalling the NewDotNet:

Very little spyware/malware installs itself with an entry in Add/Remove programs. The longer their 'junk' satys on your system, the more money the stand to make. Some are trying to present a face of honesty, but most really don't care. They get paid by click-thru so there is little incentive for them to change.

Enough, back to your log. There are still a few to remove.

First:
Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Check the following items in HijackThis.
(note: If any R* items do not appear in Safe Mode, re-run HiJackThis in Normal Mode and remove them after you finish removing these items.)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.heretofind.com/show.php?id=2&q=%s
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.heretofind.com/show.php?id=2&q=%s
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = mk:@MSITStore:C:\spe\start.chm::/start.html#

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

While still in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
(Files specified without a full path will be located in C:\Windows\ or C:\Windows\System32\)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\ <-- delete entire folder

*How to Boot into Safe mode: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...001052409420406
**Show Hidden and System files and folders: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

Second:
Would you please use HiJackThis to produces startup list and post it here:
1. From HJT main screen, click 'Config' button
2. Click 'Misc Tools' button
3. Check both boxes to the right of 'Generate StartupList Log' button
4. Click 'Generate StartupList Log' button
5. Click 'Yes' in the next dialog
6. Save the log and post a copy in this thread.

Third:
Download FindIt's.zip to your desktop.
Unzip/extract the files inside open the folder and run the FindIt's.bat and wait for a text to open, it will take awhile be patient, post the results please.

ALmost, just need to get rid of those first three R* entries.

First:
Please download the following file:
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/pv.zip

Unzip it to your Desktop (It has its own folder)
Open the PV folder
Double Click on runme.bat

Select Option 1 [Explorer Dll's]
Select Option 2 [Internet Explorer Dll's]

For each of the above Option(s) specified, a Notepad window will open with the result. Please copy and paste the contents of that window into this thread.

Second:
Boot into Safe Mode and delete this folder: C:\spe\

Third:
Please download the following Zip archive:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip

Unzip the archive to your desktop and double click on the VBS file.
(If your AntiVirus alerts, allow the script to run.

Once finished, the script will save a Notepad document to your Desktop.

Copy and paste the contents of that text file in this thread.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.heretofind.com/show.php?id=2&q=%s
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.heretofind.com/show.php?id=2&q=%s
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = mk:@MSITStore:C:\spe\start.chm::/start.html#

Close all open windows except HiJackThis and press 'Fix Checked'.

Reboot.
Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

Looks like the "R's" are gone now! Is that it? :thumb:

At last, your system is clean and free of spyware! Want to keep it that way?

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and Internet Explorer. This includes SP1 and SP2 if you use Windows XP. The first defense against infection is a properly patched Operating System.
a. Windows Update: http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Select Internet Options from the Control Panels, or from Internet Explorer (Tools -> Internet Options)
Press 'default level', then OK
Now press "Custom Level."

In the ActiveX controls and plug-ins section set these options:
'Download singed ActiveX controls' - Prompt
'Download unsigned ActiveX controls' - Disable
'Initialize and script ActiveX controls not maked as safe'- Disable
All other options accept the default

3. Download and install the following free programs
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
b. IE/Spyad: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm
c. BHODemon: http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm

4. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
You may also want to consider installing one of the following:
a. Microsoft AntiSpyware: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/s...re/default.mspx
NOTE: MS AntiSpyware only runs on Windows 2000, XP, and 2003.
b. Spybot S&D: http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
c. AdAware: http://www.lavasoft.de/

Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware. I recommend and use Micosoft AntiSpyware.

If you use, or plan on using, additional spyware/malware detection and/or removal programs, please check Items 8 and 9.

5. Install 'Spoofstick"
Spoofstick is a simple browser extension that helps users detect spoofed (fake) websites. This extension is free and installs in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
a. http://www.corestreet.com/spoofstick

6. Reset System Restore
If you are using Windows ME or Windows XP, please reset your System Restore. See Windows help for information.

7. Clean Temporary Files and Folders
Download and install the disk cleanup utility called Cleanup! from here:
http://cleanup.stevengould.org/
http://www.hijackthislogs.com/dl/CleanUp312.exe

Cleanup! will get rid of any malware which may be hiding in your temp folders (a common hiding place). You may also regain a massive amount of disk space.
Here is a tutorial which describes its usage:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial93.html

Run the disk cleanup utility called Cleanup! that you have already downloaded and installed
Check the custom settings to your liking under options, but be sure to delete temporary files and temporary internet files for all user profiles. Also, cleanout the prefetch folder and the recycle bin.
Then reboot into normal mode to let it clean out the remaining files.

8. Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware
Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List. It will save you a lot of grief, as well as money if you are thinking of purchasing. Here is the link: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

9. Anti-Spyware Programs Compared
Want to know just how effective your anti-spyware program is? Wonder how well any of the "rogue" programs listed above work? Check this link for an independent comparison of several anti-spyware programs: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm

10. Alternate Browser
Consider using an alternate browser as your default. I recommend and use Firefox as my primary browser. It is still necessary to keep Internet Explorer current and protected in order to use Windows Update.

For more information about Spyware, the tools available, and other informative material, including information on how you may have been infected in the first place, please check out this link: http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com/index...?showtopic=9857
