Hey, im new here so im new to the posting log file and everything, so i have just posted it at the bottom, i hope thats what im supposed to do.

Heres my problem anyway, My computer locks up a lot! I dont know for sure what the problem is, i think it may be a virus or some sort of spyware but im not sure. It started happening about 2 weeks ago, first it was just every so often but now it happens about 5 times a day or more. Eventualy i got fed up with it and backed up all my important files and reformatted my HD. The problem stopped for a while but when i started using the backed up files it started again, slowly at first now it happens all the time. Thats what made me think it was some sort of Virus or Spyware.

Heh, i had to type this quickly so i could get it sent before it crashes again :(

Oh i forgot to say,

Scandisk finds no errors on the disk
AVG Antivirus free edition finds no viruses
Adaware personal finds no spyware
and zone alarm up and running hasnt spotted anything coming through the internet (eg, trojan downloader programs)

That doesn't look like a complete log. And you are running it from the zip. Please Extract hijackthis.exe to its own folder. Create a folder in My documents, for example and extract it into that new folder.


Run hijackthis again from the new location and post the entire log.

Post a startuplist too please. In Hijackthis press the Config Button
Click Misc Tools
Check both boxes next to the Generate StartupList log and then click the generate startuplist log button.

What kinds of files were these you backed up and seem to be problematic?

Also, you are running an older and less secure version of Internet Explorer. Upgrading it and getting all the current security patches at Windows Update is an inportant step for you to take.

You are missing about half of the hijackthis log.

Sorry about that,My previous post has been edited to contain the full startup log file.

As for the main log file, i dont know why bits are missing, i click on scan, then save the log file. Then when i open the log file and click "select all" then paste it here. That is all that appears in the log file.

Unless of course i have some option selected by accident that doesnt record something?

oops olmost forgot, the files i backed up were save files for game, Music (mp3 and wma), Desktop wallpapers + forum signature pics ect, Text doc's (my sisters work stuff and my essays n stuff), Downloaded program installers (Like msn and windows media player ect - none of which i have used yet though)

Can any of those be the cause of the problems?

I don't know which files you have run and what they may have been. That could be a coincidence too. Do you get a Blue Screen of Death during the lockup and if so, what does it say?

You may have a hardware issue , Heat and dust in the Tower can cause problems too.

Have a look in Hijackthis and see if anything is on the ignore list. Run Hijackthis. Press the config button.
Then press the Ignorelist button. Do you see anything there? If you do press the delete all button.

Scan again and see how your hijackthis log looks.

I did the scan and looked at the ignore ist and there is nothing there. About the blue screen i did get it once, but most of the time its just the entire thing locks up where it is. I havent tried looking inside for dust, ill check that now. There is one thing i have been worried bout though, on the system setup (as in press F2 to run setup) it says that my cpu temperature is 70 degrees C. I have been assured that this is ok and that 90 is my cpu's maximum temperature, but i still think that it sounds a bit high

Ill check for dust ect in the tower and make sure the fan isnt clogged up.

Ok, I checked and the Cpu fan was jammed full of dust, i cleaned it out as much as i could and the temperature seems to be a little lower (now about 60 after 1 hour of use instead of 70)

It hasnt crashed so far, but i dont knw if that was the problem, ill let you know if it crashes again, if not then im all fixed

That's good news. It's a matter of wait and see on that score, you're right.

I just remembered something. When I ran 98 I always installed a program called RAIN. It's a CPU cooling program.

It helped on my system.
