Full Version: Hijackthis.exe contains a virus?

I've tried to download the new version of HijackThis from 3 different sites:
http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/
http://www.computercops.biz/downloads-file-328.html
http://computercops.biz/zx/Merijn/hijackthis.zip

Each time, MacAfee is saying that the file contains: W32/Generic.worm!p2p virus. This seems kind of strange to me.

A little more info, I've tried to do this on my own computer here at home and when I go to unzip the file, it brings me to the unzip wizard, asks me to choose a folder to extract it to and then says it's been extracted. But there's no Hijackthis.exe file in the folder.

So what I did was extract the .exe on my work computer and e-mail it to my home PC. When I download it, that's when MacAfee brings up the red flag saying there's a virus and deletes the file.

Does this sound familiar?
LoPhatPhuud
That is a false positive from McAfee. You need to update your virus defintions and then download again.
Hunter
:)

Yes you have to update the mcafee..you have old definitions in it from around 11 feb 2005 when they made a boo boo

Okay, I've downloaded and run HijackThis. The reason I did so is that every once in a while a "program" will show up on my taskbar for 2 seconds and then disappear. It may not be anything. AdAware & Spybot haven't found anything, but I haven't run HijackThis in almost a year, so I figured I'm due.

Here's the logfile:

And please tell us when does this appear for two sec..etc..what are you doing at the time..and do you have any task scheduled events set up on the PC ?
khalpin
I've noticed it most when I'm working from home, which I log on through Netilla. But I've done this for over a year and I only noticed it happening until 2 weeks ago. Of course, when I'm working from home is when I'm in front of the computer the longest, so that may be the reason I've noticed then the most.

As far as scheduled tasks go, I should know how to check this, but looking at Control Panel > Performance & Maintenance > Scheduled Tasks, there's nothing there but McAfee updates. I'm sure there's more to it than that.
LoPhatPhuud
Your log is clean!

One entry needs to be removed, but only since it sohld not run at startup, just when needed. I suspect the task bar issue, is a program that regularly checks for updates, or one that needs to regularly check for information, etc., from a central site. AV programs fall into the first class and Netwrok programs often in the second.

Check the following items in HiJackThis:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

Close all open windows except HiJackThis and press 'Fix Checked'.
