I had spyware problems a few months ago and, with your help, cleaned them up. My computer was free of this stuff until recently when it was inundated with infection - CoolWebSearch (which neither CWShredder nor Ad-Aware would remove), About:Blank which hijacked my opening page and multiple pop-ups. Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

*Go to start>Control Panel>Internet Options>tab programs> and click restore websettings.

*Reboot your PC back to normal.

*Perform an online virusscan:TrendMicro Housecall.

*Post a new hijackthis-log + log aboutbuster

I followed instructions but after rebooting I found I had 'disconnected' Internet Explorer. When I clicked on the icon I got a dialogue box 'Choose the program you want to use' and didn't know how to proceed. Also I had trouble with my Norton antivirus program - I couldn't set it to scan for viruses or protect emails. I used system restore to start again and went through the same process. I connected (rightly or wrongly) the problem with the two progams to CWShredder.
I had no trouble following each step in the instructions until I came to 'Navigate to and delete the following files if present'. I interpreted that to mean I should search for each file which I did and deleted sysah32.exe, sysxc32.exe, jzbyj.dll, sdkvb32.exe and spywarevanisher-free. Some of these had 'prefetch' files which I also deleted. The search did not shopw mfcbf.dll or atlvw32.dll. With worxuxwo I got a message 'Cannot delete cnml.exe. Access is denied.'
CWShredder said it removed CWSHomesearch.
I am appending the HijackThis and AboutBuster files after I had taken action.
One last question this time. I have Adaware SE and Spybot Search and Destroy downloaded. I saw a note 'Never install these'. Should I uninstall them?

I don't know what you have been doing, but it seems like the infection is still present.
So you did a systemrestore and followed my steps again? A systemrestore wasn't necessary here, because if you go in safe mode and choose the standardoption: safe mode' , you don't have internetconnection and your antivirus is NOT running in the background. That is normal, so don't worry about that.

Yes, navigate to and delete those files means you have to search for them and delete them.


About the: 'never install these' That's a link. I don't mean spysweeper or adaware or spybot with that. If you click on that link, you'll find a list of so called spywareremovers that have a dubious reputation.

You posted a hijackthislog made in safe mode, so can you please post one made in normal mode? So I can see where we stand.

I followed instructions again and once more ended in a quandary after I had rebooted (in strict order, according to the instructions, following the resetting of web settings to their original Internet Explorer defaults). 1. I could not connect to the Internet. When I clicked on Internet Explorer I got a dialogue box which said 'Choose the program you want to open this file.' I tried but I was out of my depth. 2. I kept getting a dialogue box telling me my anti-virus protection wasn't working. On clicking on Norton I found the auto-protect was off and email scanning was showing 'error'. I tried to fix both but there was no response to my clicking on the appropriate instructions. All this (1 and 2 above) were exactly the same as my earlier experience.

I used system restore and started again. I followed instructions up to and including the Aboutbuster scan. I did not proceed with CWShredder scan or any of the remaining steps because my earlier experience suggested that if I did I would not had been able to communicate with you for more instructions. On rebooting to normal mode I did not have the difficulties with Internet Explorer or Norton as earlier described.

The results I have so far are:

Hello, that log looks much better except for the C:\PROGRA~1\worxuxwo\GEgDI8BL.exe, but don't worry.. we are going to get rid of it in another way.

Odd that CWShredder is causing you those problems with your IE. Is cwshredder up to date? Seems like it's deleting something related to your connection or file associations with IE. Because it says afterwards: ''Choose the program you want to open this file.'
Can you start CWShredder again and click 'scan' instead of 'fix'
That wont fix anything, but just a scan of the bad files found. Save that log.

When done...

*Go to start >run and type: services.msc and click OK
Scroll down in that list until you find the service Network Security Service
Doubleclick on it. In the window that will appear, click on "Stop" (if not greyed out) and change the Startup Type to disabled.
Click apply and OK and close all open windows.

Now I also want you to check something:

It could be possible that this hijacker deleted some files, so check if the following are still present:

°Control.exe: Is in your C:\WINDOWS\system32. Download here when missing.

°Hosts: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC .Download here when missing.
Unzip hoster to an own folder, eg C:\Hoster
Start Hoster.exe, click 'Restore Original Hosts' and click OK. Close the program.

°Shell.dll: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 Download here when missing

°SDHelper.dll:
If you are using Spybot Search & Destroy, this hijacker can also delete SDHelper.dll.
Download SDHelper.dll.
Place the file in the Spybot Search & Destroy-folder. Most probably, this ist C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy

When done this...

* Download Killbox to your desktop.
Click killbox.exe.
Select the option "Delete on reboot".
In the field labeled "Full Path of File to Delete" copy and paste next:

C:\PROGRA~1\worxuxwo

(here we are going to try to delete the entire folder using killbox)
Then press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it.
Killbox will tell you that the listed files will be deleted on next reboot.. Click YES
When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES
If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.

Your computer must reboot now.

After reboot, look if C:\PROGRA~1\worxuxwo <== this folder is still present.

If not, just follow my last instructions and skip the next step.

If the folder is still present, then use killbox again, but now we are going to killbox the files inside that folder one by one.. use the delete on reboot-option.
Next to that field 'Full Path of File to Delete', there is a browse button.
Now browse to the worxuxwo-folder and open it. There will be several files inside.
Now select them one by one and click the red button with the white cross.. and everytime when killbox tell you that the listed files will be deleted on next reboot.. Click YES
When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click NO.
Only click YES on the: Do you want to reboot now? When you selected the last file in that folder.

When done this..

Start hijackthis, click 'config' (right bottom) > misc Tools > Generate a startuplistlog.
Next to it, you'll find two boxes. Also check them.
Post that log in your next reply together wit the log from CWShredder.

I should have said in my previous report we are making progress. My computer already is functioning better. Most noticeably the About:Blank has vanished from my Internet opening page. I also feel we are moving forward with each round of activity, as this latest report will indicate (e.g.'Goodbye to worxuxwo and all that').
Now to the report:
1. I wasn't able to save a CWShredder log, but it showed CWS HomeSearch was found. It was negative about all other CWS's. The CWShredder version I use is v2.14.
2. I followed instructions on Network Security Service and changed the Startup Type to disabled.
3. I searched the following:
(a) Control.exe ... the search showed it was in the folders C:\WINDOWS\system32 and C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache.
(B) Hosts ... hosts.20040429-112932.backup was in the folder C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers. Hosts.sbs was in C:Program Files\Spybot -Search and Destroy.
I tried to find Hoster to download and after reading various documents, including a lengthy Miscrosoft one, ended up confused and did nothing.
© Shell was popular - the search produced 15 files with shell in the name, including SHELL.DLL in C:\WINDOWS\system and shell.dll in C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache.
(d) SDHelper.dll The search drew a blank so I downloaded this file into
the Spybot Search and Destroy folder.
4. I downloaded KillBox.
5. I tried to delete the folder worxuxwo without success but removed the 11 files it contained and then got rid of the empty folder. This was a laborious process despite your instructions - no doubt it was my own stupidity but I was forced to eliminate the files one by one.

This part of the exercise went pretty well.

1. I 'fixed' the three entries in Hijackthis you specified: i.e. worxuxwo\GEgDIBBK.exe; iexplore.exe and sysah32.exe.
2. I searched for sysxc32.exe and sysah32.exe and they had really gone from the computer.
3. I ran Aboutbuster and it said 'No ADS found on system'.
4. I downloaded regfix. It found 232 invalid entries. It did not ask me if I wanted to merge the contents to the registry, but it did invite me to delete the invalid entries. I dillydallied about this because you hadn't said to delete but then I saw sysah and other undesirable names and with a rush of blood to the head I deleted the lot.
5. I performed an online scan with Bitdefender (with autoclean selected) and it reported 'Scanning successful. No viral code found.'
6. I rebooted and ran Hijackthis in normal mode. The result follows:

This is a regfile. Most probably you used a program called RegFix which deletes invalid entries. Be carefull with that.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Kaspersky online and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Sorry about the regfix. The error occurred because it was my practice to print out your messages so I could follow them step by step. I should have downloaded from your links before starting on that process.

I have run the correct regfix today with the result you forecast.

I will install Spywareblaster and follow the other steps you prescribed.

CWShredder still shows CWS HomeSearch on the computer. I thought I would try eliminating it with CWShredder. If this did result in trouble with Internet Explorer and Norton Antivirus as before, I can use System Restore to return the computer settings as they currently are. I would not collect all the nasty things again, as I did on previous occasions. Do you think this is worth trying? I have a feeling CWShredder will not cause a problem this time. However, that is an expression of my restored confidence rather than knowledge. What do you think?

Well, about that systemrestore,

An important thing to do is please disable your systemrestore.(note: this will delete all your system restore points and malware that were present in it).
How to disable system restore in XP
Reboot.. and after rebooting, enable it again, and make a new systemrestorepoint. A clean one now! :)

So, if you try CWShredder and it crashes again (which is still odd.. so really make sure you have the latest version!) and you have to perform systemrestore again, you'll still have a clean systemrestorepoint, because the previous ones with the malware in it will be deleted.

Can you also tell me what file CWShredder is finding all the time?
I know it's homesearch, but any specific file?
Actually, aboutbuster also deals with homesearch and ADS, so make sure it doesn't find anything anymore. :)

I have had an extraordinary day. I thought I would make a final cleanup and started with disabling system restore and then enabling it again.

This done I downloaded CWShredder from your link to ensure I had the latest version. I then 'fixed' CWSHomesearch (without, unfortunately being able to identify the file.) The only immediate effect was that my Internet opening page switched from ninemsn.com.au to google - no calamity and easily remedied. Norton appeared normal.

However, after switching off the computer and doing other things on this splendid Saturday morning in Melbourne I returned to find some changes. I decided to make another attempt at running Kaspersky online, having failed the first time around. As I was doing this a dialogue box told me I was disconnected to the Internet, having been blocked by Windows Firewall. I had the option to 'unblock' which I did. Then I found the monitor screen was bombarded by the Symantec dialogue box telling me the virus protection was turned off. I checked and it was the old story, the virus protection was disabled and the email scanning also wasn't operating. Attempts to enable both failed.

I attempted twice to system restore, using the earliest restore point I could conjure up. It seemed to be the time I had done by disabling and enabling. But it didn't work. I still had the problems. I tried to system restore again with the same result.

I persevered with Kaspersky, which took hours. It produced 62 warnings of viruses. Some of these I recognised and deleted. No fewer than 42 referred to Norton Antivirus/Quarantine files and were labelled Exploit HTML.Mht (most of them) or Exploit LDragdrop. I have not deleted them because Kaspersky warns about eliminating files when you are don't know what you are doing and I was already a bit worried about what I had done before.

So this is the current situation.
1.CWShredder says it has removed CWSHomesearch.
2. My Internet connection has been affected, but is manageable.
3. Norton's virus protection and email scanner are not functioning and there is no simple remedy. The dialogue box informing me pops up every few seconds.
4. Kaspersky online is showing 42 Norton Antivirus\Quarantine files are infected.

I hope you see an explanation for all this!

Yes, you may safely delete all the files in the quarantaine of norton.
Hmm.. I'm starting to think more and more that norton is also responsible for those crashes etc.
I had 7 cases last week where norton acted really strange after an update. It wont start anymore, disabled every half hour, made the system crash, no connection etc..

So maybe uninstall norton and try another antivirus in a meanwhile.
There are great free antivirus which don't take as many resources norton does.

AVG, Bitdefender OR Avast are good FREE antivirus.
Never install more than one antivirusscanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give problems and decreases the reliability of it seriously!
Zonealarm OR Sygate are FREE firewalls.

I proceeded:

1. I deleted the Norton quarantine files.
2. This made no improvement in Norton's performance and I was constantly irritated by its warning boxes, I uninstalled Norton towards the end of the session. The Hijackthis log was taken after this, and I still see Symantec files there, but Norton has disappeared from 'Programs' etc. and I am no longer getting the warning boxes. I have Bitdefender and Kaspersky downloaded (although I have always operated the latter from its website).
On firewalls I have the Microsoft example which comes with Service Pack 2 and also I have downloaded Spywareblaster at your suggestion.
To get rid of spyware I have employed Ad Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. I have Spysubtract on a trial (I thought it incorporated CWShredder, which I have used as a separate program). Spysubtract's price is dropping, but in view of your statement that I can have too many of these things, I am undecided whether to buy.
3. I downloaded rkfiles, went into safe mode and scanned. The log and a new Hijackthis log follows:

You may manually delete all those symantec files after uninstalling norton.

Because norton is known for a very poor uninstall and it leaves a whole bunch of files behind.
Also check and fix next in hijackthis again:

Because you uninstalled norton, it's really important that you install a new antivirus. An online scanner isn't enough, because this doesn't provide realtimeprotection.

AVG, Bitdefender OR Avast are good FREE antivirus.
Never install more than one antivirusscanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give problems and decreases the reliability of it seriously!
Zonealarm OR Sygate are FREE firewalls.

How are things running now? Crashes gone?
