Hi,

My computer now boots slowly, takes next to forever to get wo Win98SE and comes up to a phony amatuerish looking blue screen that says I have a 'Fatal Error" related to: trojan-spy.html.smitfraud.c

I have also been having an alleged virus detector program called Secure iGuard come up frequently. I didn'yt install it (thoug it is possible that it was instralled by another semi legit user of the computer (e.g. a child).

As always, any help appreciated. -Rondi
Bobbi Flekman
Hi rondi,

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT* Be sure you know how to VIEW HIDDEN FILES

Press CTRL ALT DELETE to open Windows Task Manger. Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

C:\WP.EXE

Exit Task Manager.

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure! I would just copy each file path and paste it in the field) MAKE SURE TO ENTER ALL FILE PATHS!:

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe
C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts. If you recieve an error message "PendingRenameOperation...." and your computer doesn't restart, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\Log Files <-WILL be there!
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

Reboot into normal mode.

*Download and install Registrar Lite version 2.00
*Double click the purple Registrar Lite icon on your desktop.
*Copy the line below and paste it into the "Address" field (located at the top) of the program:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

*Click the "Go" button.
*It will take you into the "Policies" folder.
*Locate the "System" folder (in the right panel)
*If found, right-click on the System folder and go to Delete
*Be very careful that you only delete the System folder that is inside the Policies folder.

Reboot your computer again.

1.) Download the Hoster from HERE Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

2.) Download: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf
To use: right-click and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log.

Hi rondi,

You have a CoolWebSearch Infection. Please download CoolWebShredder, from http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshr...r_download.html
Extract CWShredder to its own folder. Restart in Safe Mode (How do I Safe Boot my computer?) and run the program.

Be sure all open windows are closed. Click the "Fix ->" button.

Make sure you let it fix all CWS Remnants.

Check your computer with the following free anti-virus/anti-trojan products.

Housecall Anti Virus Panda Anti Virus Trojan Scan Bit Defender

And, here's the link to McAfee AVERT Stinger and instructions for use.

Be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.

Please create a list of programs that can be removed using Add/Remove Programs
Start HiJackThis. Click "Config"->"Misc Tools"->"Open Uninstall Manager" ->"Save List".
Save the log to a convenient location, and copy it into this thread.

Download CCleaner and install this program.

Download remv3.zip and unzip it to its own folder (otherwise it willnot work)

Restart your computer in Safe Mode. How do I Safe Boot my computer?

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

You have Microsoft's Find Fast running on your program and while a legitimate program, it is a resource hog. It is usually the cause of your computer getting really slow or even freezing for several seconds while it is indexing. Find fast neither finds things any better or faster than other Windows searches. You will notice system improvement by disabling this one. After fixing with Hijackthis, go into the "FindFast"-icon in the Control Panel and choose the "Index \ Close and Stop" menu option.

O4 - Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE

There are restrictions set on Control Panel. If you or your system administrator has not put this restriction on Control Panel, also check this item.

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked".

Show hidden files. How do I show hidden files?
At the end if the fix you can return the files to hidden status if you want.

Delete the following files in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\WIN98SE\SYSTEM\SFCMAN32.DLL
C:\WIN98SE\SYSTEM\QTTASK.EXE

C:\WP.EXE

Restart your computer.

Start CCleaner and click the button "Run Cleaner". Open the folder you've extracted remv3.zip to and doubleclick remv3.bat.

Click "Start", "Control Panel", "Network connections". Rightclick on your default connection and click "Properties".
Doubleclick "Internet Protocol". Check "Obtain DNS server address automatically".

When the program is finished, restart your computer in Normal Mode and post c:\log.txt and a fresh log from HijackThis.

You may have to reinstall QuickTime.

Did you do the instructions in Hijack This as well? I would have expected that there would be less pieces of malware showing...
rondi
Actually, I did try to follow all directions as give. I was unable to locate (even after having changed the setting to view hidden and system files) all of the files that were mentioned to delete; and some of the things that you said to mark/fix in HJT didn't show up when I ran the program while in safe mode, as instructed.

I have just run it again and several of the worst did show-up this time. Sorry of I am confusing things here, but I am willing to do whatever to get this thing back in shape. In the best of times my computer (a P2 350) is nothing to write home about -but it generally does what I need to do when it's not been taken over by malware. I do appreciate your efforts. Here's my latest log:

Hi rondi,

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightLAN 02] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\VISUAL NETWORKS\VISUAL IP INSIGHT\SBC\IPClient.exe" -l

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked". Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

Hi rondi,

This log is clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....
rondi
Thank you!
I am now working my way through the "How did I get infected" link.

Semper vigilant !
