Shortly after getting an alert from my antivirus software, I went to my desktop and found this message:

A fatal error in IE has occured at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM(01) + 00010E36. Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c

*System can not function in normal mode
Please check your security settings.

*Scan your PC with any available antivirus / spyware remover program to fix the
problem



Other than this message, there doesn't appear to be anything else wrong with my computer, but I'd like to get this message off of my desktop. I tried running both spyware programs that I have and deleting everything they found, but the message did not go away. Can you please help me?

Well, I thought nothing was wrong with with my computer, but in following your instructions, I figured out something that was wrong. When I went to the Display Control Panel, I no longer had the "Desktop" tab. In fact, the only two tabs that I still have are "Screen Saver" and "Settings." I went to my girlfriend's account on this computer and she is not having any problems with her desktop and has all of her tabs, so it appears my account is the only one affected. Any suggestions?

Then please check the Display Control Panel. The missing tabs should be visible.

My tabs are back, but if I go to the "Desktop" tab and click in the box of selections of different backgrounds, I am unable to select anything. I selected the "Web" tab under "Customize Desktop," but the only thing in there was "My Current Home Page" which I am unable to delete.

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and Internet Explorer. This includes SP1 and SP2 if you use Windows XP. The first defense against infection is a properly patched Operating System.
a. Windows Update: http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Select Internet Options from the Control Panels, or from Internet Explorer (Tools -> Internet Options)
Press 'default level', then OK
Now press "Custom Level."

In the ActiveX controls and plug-ins section set these options:
'Download singed ActiveX controls' - Prompt
'Download unsigned ActiveX controls' - Disable
'Initialize and script ActiveX controls not maked as safe'- Disable

3. Download and install the following free programs

Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware. I recommend and use Micosoft AntiSpyware.

5. Install 'Spoofstick"
Spoofstick is a simple browser extension that helps users detect spoofed (fake) websites. This extension is free and installs in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

6. Reset System Restore
If you are using Windows ME or Windows XP, please reset your System Restore. See Windows help for information.

7. Clean Temporary Files and Folders
Download and install the disk cleanup utility called Cleanup! from here:

Check the custom settings to your liking under options, but be sure to delete temporary files and temporary internet files for all user profiles. Also, cleanout the prefetch folder and the recycle bin.
Then reboot into normal mode to let it clean out the remaining files.

10. Alternate Browser
Consider using an alternate browser as your default. I recommend and use Firefox as my primary browser. It is still necessary to keep Internet Explorer current and protected in order to use Windows Update.
