Full Version: I'm infected but I don't know with what

Something is wrong with this computer. I left it for one week and who knows what my 20 year old son did to it. He thinks he's a genius with computers but he's not. :)

I have pop-ups when I never did before.

Some software that used to run won't. Little box says I'm missing some system files.

Getting kicked out of IE, but not all of the time.

Below is my "hijackthis log".

Thanks in advance. You've helped me before and I really appreciate it.

Greg

For the missing system files run the following from a Command Prompt

sfc /SCANNOW

Be sure you have access to your Windows CD, or, if your have recovery cd instead, then check for the presence of the following folder: C:\Windows\I386\. This contains the Windows default install files..

Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Check the following items in HijackThis.
(note: If any R* items do not appear in Safe Mode, re-run HiJackThis in Normal Mode and remove them after you finish removing these items.)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Media Access] C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gah95on6] C:\WINDOWS\system32\gah95on6.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [237j36P] ir5wipes.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [J0otRWj3T] hosaee.exe

O16 - DPF: {15AD6789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windupdates.com/cab/CDT/ie/bridge-c10.cab

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

While still in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
(Files specified without a full path will be located in C:\Windows\ or C:\Windows\System32\)
C:\Program Files\Media Access\ <-- delete entire folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gah95on6.exe
ir5wipes.exe
hosaee.exe

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

Thanks for the help with the system files. I think I've corrected that problem.

However, I have not been able to start the system in Safe Mode. I used the system config method but now I get a message on my monitor that says;

Out of Range
Hf:30 Khz - 70 Khz
V:50 Hz - 150 Hz
60 Hz / 74.9 KHz

It appears to be a default message from the monitor and not a systems message.

The result is that I can't progress past this message. I'm unable to start the computer in the normal mode.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Hunter

When I ran Highjackthis in safe mode, it did not show the following in the log.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AutoUpdater] "C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate\AutoUpdate.exe"

Nor could I find the folder "AutoUpdate".

I was able to find and delete the folder "cxtpls"

Thanks again,

Your log is clean.

I have no idea where AutoUpdate went. Obviously it was removed from the time of the first log to this one. As long as its gone, I won;t pursue how!
