Hey guys, I hope you can help. Last week I got the "You're In Danger" wallpaper hijack where a black screen replaced my wallpaper and directed me to a spyware link. After reviewing removal steps on this and other sites, I was able to disable the hijack through my Control Panel BUT there were no instructions on how to remove it. For the rest of the week, everytime I turned on my computer I had approx 10-15 blue screen popups directing me to spyware pages. To avoid further hijacks I started using Mozilla Firefox but now I can't get into Internet Explorer at all. I don't really need it as Firefox is fine, but my Yahoo Messenger will not run either, And I'm still getting the blue screen spyware popup but it cannot connect to the net so it stays blank. Here is my Hijack This log. Thanks!

EDIT: I cannot access any of the websites listed in the middle of my HJT log! Also, I know that 2 of the files (req.dat & spoolsrv32.exe) are malware. But is there anything else?

As long as you are running the bastard step child (Kazaa ++) as afile sharing program, you will continue to run inot spyware, virus and trojan issues. Here is some info for you...

Clean and Infected File Sharing Programs

Wondering if your favorite peer-to-peer file-swapping program has spyware bundled into it? Chances are, it does.

Infected

The following file-swappers are confirmed to have spyware or other unwanted parasites bundled into them:

* KaZaa (offers a paid version without spyware)

* Limewire

* Audiogalaxy

* Bearshare (offers a paid version without spyware)

* Imesh

* Morpheus

* Grokster

* Xolox

* Blubster 2.x aka Piolet (Blubster 2.0 and higher and Piolet are adware and bundle other adware)

* OneMX

* FreeWire

* BitTorrent (Only the Unify Media version. Other versions are clean to my knowledge. See warning below)

Also see this page which details what most of the above programs bundle.

[.quote]Clean

The following file-swappers have been found not to have any spyware or other advertising parasites bundled into them:

* WinMX (recommended)

* Shareaza

* E-Mule

* Gnucleus

* Blubster 1.2.3 (Later versions include adware)

* Soulseek

* BitTorrent (see warning below)

* Direct Connect

* Mute

* EarthStation5 (Not recommended. See below)

Regarding EarthStation5

Earth Station 5 once contained code that would allow an attacker to delete any file off of your computer's hard drive. Whether it was placed there intentionally or was a bug left in the code by accident is unclear. For now, we recommend against using it.

Regarding BitTorrent

BitTorrent is an open source program distributed under a license that allows for repackaging and distribution. Unfortunately, a company named Unify Media Ltd has decided to distribute a version infected with the C2Media/Lop parasite. We strongly recommend that you download BitTorrent only from the official web site.

Cracks

There are two programs, Kazaalite and Groksterlite, which you may be wondering about. Both programs are spyware-free versions of those file-swappers. Some people believe that they are alternative versions put out by the makers of KaZaa and Grokster.

Let's kill that myth right here. Neither of these are distributed by the owners of Kazaa or Grokster. They are cracks, meaning that the people distributing them violated their End User License Agreements to decompile them and remove the embedded spyware.

You may think that by using these products, you are giving the proverbial finger to the makers of spyware-ridden software. I'm sorry to say, this is not true. You merely show them that their software is so popular that you will go to any lengths to use it. This tells them that it is safe to keep selling out their millions and millions of users to the parasitical spyware companies. It also lets them point to the size of their network when spyware companies come sniffing around. By using these products, cracked or not, you contribute to the problem of advertising spyware.

It is recommended that you not use any version of a product that uses spyware, whether it is a spyware-free crack, or the normal version. Spyware companies pay good money to the developers that sell out their users. The only way to discourage developers from including spyware into their products is to show them that his/her users will go elsewhere. No users equals no sponsors equals no money. It's as simple as that.

Second:
Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Reboot in Safe Mode* and run HiJackThis. <-- IMPORTANT

Check the following items in HijackThis.
(note: If any R* items do not appear in Safe Mode, re-run HiJackThis in Normal Mode and remove them after you finish removing these items.)
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

While still in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
(Files specified without a full path will be located in C:\Windows\ or C:\Windows\System32\)
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ <-- delete entire folder
C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dat

**Show Hidden and System files and folders: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode

Third:
1.Download the Hoster from here: www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip
2. Install the program and run it.
3. Press 'Restore Original Hosts' and press 'OK'
4. Exit Program.

Note: This program also has a Hosts file backup facility that may want to use if you have added custom entries to the Hosts file.

Fourth:
Open the Display Control Panel
Select 'Desktop' tab
Press 'Customize Desktop' button
Select 'Web' tab
Uncheck and remove any entry that you did not install
Uncheck 'Lock Desktop Items' box, if checked
Press 'OK'

Last:
Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

Thanks LoPhatPhuud, I really appreciate the help!

First of all, I followed your instructions to a tee... but I still can't get rid of the following 2 entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1C044AAD-7955-4cbd-8175-501A165C4E5D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dat

O20 - Winlogon Notify: req - C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dat

I tried to delete them in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode but every time I scanned again, there were back. I even emptied my Recycle Bin thinking that maybe they were housed in it and were still working but they still showed up. Everything else looks pretty good.

I also deleted a couple of other items as per advice from another poster. The items in question were the www.miniclip.com game loaders so I knew they were harmless files, but I didn't need them anyways.

Here is the new log file. Thanks again for your help. I would be happy to donate a few dollars to your Paypal account if you have one. Let me know...
Rainer

PS - I am well aware of the evil that is Kazaa! I read your article and have been meaning to "upgrade" to E-mule but just haven't gotten around to it! If it's any small consolation, at least I am using KazaaLite so it's not as bad as regular normal Kazaa!

First:
Would you please use HiJackThis to produces startup list and post it here:
1. From HJT main screen, click 'Config' button
2. Click 'Misc Tools' button
3. Under 'Generate StartupList Log' button, check both boxes
4. Click 'Generate StartupList Log' button
5. Click 'Yes' in the next dialog
6. Save the log and post a copy in this thread.

Second:
Download the attached zip file (multi.zip)

Extract the Folder it contains to a convenient place. That folder is named multi.

Close all but one Internet Explorer Window.

Open that folder and double click on multi.bat

This will produce and open a file named log.txt
Copy the contents into your next reply. If it is too long, then attach it instead.

Open Killbox, click the option 'Delete on Reboot'

Enter (using Copy and Paste) the names of the files to delete in the box 'Full Path of File to Delete'

Here is the first entry:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dat

Click the red X, Say yes to the message box that comes up, then say No to the next box asking you to reboot.

This is important, coz if you reboot before you are finished entering all the files, you will have to start over again.

Do the same for this entire list (You have already done the first one)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dat
C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.exe

Ok so a recap of this

1.)Copy a path & file (whole line) from the list here, and paste it to the first line(of killbox)
2.)Click the Red X for each file you enter
3.)Say "Yes" to first message, and "No" to reboot now(next message)
4.)Repeat for the entire list

5.)Reboot.

Second:
Check the following items in HiJackThis:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1C044AAD-7955-4cbd-8175-501A165C4E5D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dat

O20 - Winlogon Notify: req - C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dat

Close all open windows except HiJackThis and press 'Fix Checked'.

Reboot.
Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

SUCCESS!

LoPhatPhuud, you are a genius! The req.dat file is finally gone from my HJT log... but now a couple of my driver files for Messenger seem to be missing as well. This doesn't appear to be causing any problems as both MSN Messenger & Yahoo Messenger seem to be working fine, but I just think it's odd that the .dll files were there a minute ago and now they show as "file missing". Oh well, here is my new HJT log file. Thanks again,
Rainer

PS - This may be asking for too much... but a while back I had problems with the about:blank CWS "virus" and in deleting that I seem to have restricted entry to my msconfig settings. Whenever I try to access msconfig from the "Run" command, I get a message saying "Windows cannot find 'msconfig'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search". I can access regedit using the "Run" command but not msconfig. I know there is an alternate method of accessing msconfig, but I can't remember what it is. The reason I want to get in there is to remove items from my start-up. Any suggestions?

Also, if you have a Paypal account, send me the link as I will definitely fire off a small donation as my way of saying "Thanks"!!

Either msconfig.exe is missing or you have a registry problem.

Try this.

Go to start>Run and paste this in:
C:\windows\PChealth\Helpctr\binaries\msconfig.exe

Press enter

Does msconfig start or do you get an error?
misterrainer
Hi Mosaic1, lo and behold, msconfig starts up when I try to access it that way! But it still won't load when I try and enter 'msconfig' or 'msconfig.exe' in the Run command. I'm not sure what the problem is - and thankfully I don't need to navigate to that utility too often or else I'd go nuts! Any ideas on how to get it back?

BTW, I've got a bunch of garbage cluttering up my "Start", "All Programs" menu. Basically they are old games or programs that I've uninstalled but there is still a link for them in the "Start, All programs" menu that is empty but that I can't seem to get rid of. I know it's an easy solution, but it escapes me at this point!! Any suggestions?
Rainer

PS - THANKS!
misterrainer
See, I knew I would figure it out on my own... and of course it came back to me mere seconds after submitting my post! I found it in the C:\Documents & Settings\All Users\Start Menu.

But if you help me with my missing msconfig problem, that would be phenomenal!

You guys rock!
Rainer
Mosaic1
Go to start >Run and type regedit
Press enter

Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths

Under App Paths you will see a lot of subkeys.

Look for one named MSCONFIG.EXE

Is it there?
misterrainer
Hi Mosaic1, no msconfig.exe is NOT at that location. What I do see is:

bckgzm.exe
chkrzm.exe
cmmgr32.exe
firefox.exe
HijackThis.exe
hrtzzm.exe
mphonetools.exe
MSMSGS.EXE
MSNMSGR.EXE
PictureViewer.exe
pst.exe
QuickTimePlayer.exe
QuickTimeUpdater.exe
rvsezm.exe
shvlzm.exe
wmplayer.exe

So I'm guessing that somwhere along the lines, it got removed from this location... probably by me in my haste and lack of knowledge!
Mosaic1
Whoa! You are missing a boatload there. And the reason Hijackthis cannot get your IE version is because that entry is not there either.

Let's start with MsConfig

Go back and right click on App Paths. Select new key. Name the new key
MSCONFIG.EXE

With The key named MSCONFIG.EXE highlight in the left pane look in the right at the value named default.

Double click on default. In the box which will pop, paste inthis path and press ok.

C:\windows\PChealth\Helpctr\binaries

Close the registry. I am not sure if you need a restart for this to take effect. Try to run msconfig from start >run

If it doesn't work, reboot.
misterrainer
Hi Mosaic1, yeah it still didn't work! I'm not sure what happened to all of those values but another poster suggested that the CWS "virus" has the ability to delete the msconfig executionable so that is what I'm thinking has occurred on my PC. Someone else suggested attempting to reload the file from my Windows XP disk so that will be my next attempt... once I can actually locate my Windows XP disk! In any case, while it might be a nuissance, I don't really think that it's critical to have access to msconfig from the Run command - as long as I can reach it, I'll be ok! Thanks again for your help and if there is anything else you can suggest, your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you,
Rainer
Mosaic1
Except for one thing. You do have the executable or msconfig wouldn't have opened when you typed the full path in earlier.

C:\windows\PChealth\Helpctr\binaries\msconfig.exe

I also want you to try to open help ont he start menu please and tell me if it works.
Mosaic1
Help will not open either. Yuo are missing that entry.

And I need you to go back to the msconfig entry you added and double click on default.

I gave you this:
C:\windows\PChealth\Helpctr\binaries

It needs msconfig.exe added so it is this:

C:\windows\PChealth\Helpctr\binaries\msconfig.exe

Then it will work.

Want help back?
Create another new key under App paths and name it:
HELPCTR.EXE

Double click on the default for HELPCTR.EXE

Enter this in the box and press ok

C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\HelpCtr.exe
misterrainer
Hi Mosaic1, yeah I had noticed that you had left out the 'msconfig.exe' from the string when you gave it to me the first time so I had already added it... but it still won't work. And I'm not sure why. And you were right, the 'Help & Support' tool wouldn't open either... but it works great now that I have added that key in. I know that I had mentioned before that I wasn't too concerned about being unable to access msconfig from the 'Run' command but it is now eating away at me! I want to figure out why it won't work! Aaaaargh...
Rainer

PS - Thanks again for your help!
misterrainer
SUCCESS! Ok, I decided to give it one last try and used Windows Explorer to navigate to the folder where msconfig.exe resides. I then right clicked on the file and clicked properties to get the path EXACTLY as it is shown on my computer. I then went back into the registry and copy & pasted this path into the Default key and voila, it worked!

It looks like the only difference between what we were entering and what the path showed under properties for msconfig.exe, was that the word "windows" is written in upper-case as opposed to lower-case like we were entering it. I didn't think that registry keys were case sensitive but perhaps they are???

In any case, thank you so much for all of your help. The last thing I'd appreciate is if you can give me a list of what other keys I should have in my AppPath registry. Now I know that each PC will be different, but can you look at what I currently have and let me know if anything common to all PC's is missing? Thanks,
Rainer

Here is what I do have:

bckgzm.exe
ccleaner.exe
chkrzm.exe
cmmgr32.exe
firefox.exe
Helpctr.exe
HijackThis.exe
hrtzzm.exe
mphonetools.exe
msconfig.exe
MSMSGS.EXE
MSNMSGR.EXE
PictureViewer.exe
pst.exe
QuickTimePlayer.exe
QuickTimeUpdater.exe
rvsezm.exe
shvlzm.exe
wmplayer.exe
Mosaic1
You're welcome. LOL Great work! You did it. How many weird little glitches will you run into? I can never be sure. Mine opens no matter how I write the path, just so long as the path is correct. Windows windows WINDOWS

You are missing several. Windows can be odd at times.

Send me a copy of your key. I'll make you a new one.

Go to App Paths, right click on it and choose export from the menu.
Name the key App paths

Right click on App paths.reg and choose send to compressed.

Email it to me as an attachment and I'll add the most common entries for you.
